There are a number of movies I only watched after hearing you mention them on your videos, and I've loved every one, especially Space Truckers.
Yeah he’s got good taste in movies. The mummy. Cutthroat island, blade runner, the thing, Alien, big trouble in little china. He mentions some bangers in his videos.
Fantastic vid as always, Seth. I'm not a fan of the Borg ecosystem of RPGs, but this was a great breakdown nonetheless and I always enjoy your content and style. Great watch!
This looks super fun and more detailed than Mork Borg. The ash mechanic reminds me of the Blade tv show where humans snorted vampire dust as a drug/power boost. The only memorable thing about that show. Keep up the great work Seth!
Yesssssss!!! I love this game! I recently ran DCC for my friends and one of my players rolled up a chicken that became the MVP of the game. I was so excited to see that Pirate Borg actually lets you play AS A CHICKEN and I immediately pitched to that player to revive his rooster as his PC for the game. We haven’t played it yet but I am stoked for Henley’s return.🏴☠️
I've been meaning to play this for a while now. I'll probably start with Mork Borg, but this is such a great hook to get into Pirate Borg and you've convinced me to prioritize this more.
03:30 By the time of the 'golden age of piracy' many indigenous populations (Kalinago, Guanahatabey, Ciguayo, Taino etc…) had been decimated by and aggressively absorbed into the colonial milieu - or just hanging on in by the skin of their teeth. There were so many disparate languages that making a single coherent indigenous faction might be more of a stretch than doing the same for all the poor triangle-traded African folks that ended up cutting Cane on the Brazos (usually can't mention the 's' word [that means no-wage labourers] in comments). But, I agree, it could make for a better rounded set of options to have an extra two spreads for both the native population and unmentionable s's. Great review of a great game.
Awesome review, you certainly convinced my imaginary friends to want to play this, flipper hand skip and pick it up pike are very excited now 😉 we all love that movie 🏴☠️ 🍻
Love Pirate Borg! It has been a good refresher and simple to run game! On another topic, I'll be starting a Cyberpunk campaign soon and I'm very excited for it! I'll run an introductory One-shot first to see if everyone is on board!
@@lincolnmartin7743 very much. And I for one have no use for something that is just a moderately okay game dressed up in a hideous and inefficient layout. It gives off more edge-lord vibes than me in the late 90s in a trenchcoat with a katana (to be a teenager again)...

Okay, i had to stop the video at the 2 minute mark. Cutthroat Island IS one of the best pirate movies, up there wit Pirates of the Carribian. You two are not the only people on the world. We are at least three!!
I can see where the creators might have felt that including the indigenous islanders could be choppy waters and just steered around that potential maelstrom
@@madmanvarietyshow9605 I don't know about harassment, but just the logistics of incorporating tragic history into a goofy game. The disconnect in tone would have been jarring. But absolutely! Your own table is your own business, write up that character type and have fun!
Part of it might be that the game is from Sweden where they don’t have the (shall we say) extensive background with colonialism that places like the American continents and Caribbean, Africa, Australia etc do. I think it’s something you’d definitely need editors from some of the communities go over, and in Sweden they may not have had the access that the creators might have had in, say, the US.
Hey Seth, great review. I really appreciate that you cover smaller RPGs and put out such well-produced, thorough, and funny videos. At about 12:11 you mention being surprised that there's no bonus for singing around the table, but some of the new home rule suggestions in the Down Among the Deep kickstarter actually do grant bonuses if your party can belt out a shanty (and a rule for skipping checks by drinking rum... that's going to be trouble).
I'm a long time viewer and wanted to throw a couple pennies in the hat. Also if someone wanted to judge you as an author what book would you say is your best or a good entry point. Thanks for all you do!
I'm not Seth, but I just started his novel Dämoren and it's like it was written specifically for me. It does the modern monster genre so well. I can't put it down.
Thank you very much! Books, it depends on what you like. For Sword & Sorcery thief adventures, my collection *Mountain of Daggers* opens my _Black Raven_ series. That's not a novel, but a loosely linked collection of stories following a master thief. For modern-day monster hunters with lots of action, explosions, and a bit of horror, check out my novel *Dämoren,* the first in my _Valducan_ series. That's my most popular. For a modern-day New Weird about a drug-addict sorceress travelling the multiverse to find Carcosa, then *Ashes of Onyx.* That one is my love letter to all the books that inspired me, so there's a little Clive Barker, William Gibson, and Robert Chambers mixed with a shot of Joan Jett for good measure. It's by far my strangest novel.
'Damoren' is the best entry into the Valducan series, but the books can be read out of order. There is no assumption of the reader having prior knowledge. (Unlike some other series. Looking at you, Jim) 'Ashes' might be more technically proficient, but I was more drawn to the Valducan characters. 'Mountain' is good, pulpy fun. Didn't win a Pulitzer, but is a damn fine lunch break book.
Came for the Seth Skorkowsky RPG review, stayed because the comment section is surprisingly full of other people who also unironically enjoyed _Cutthroat Island!_
Suggestion for another system review; any of Lion and Dragon, Sword and Caravan or Baptism of Fire. The creator went to great lengths to get the rules to be fun but also authentic to what medieval people thought their world was like.
I found a great way to really improve DnD is to make WISDOM the stat for all ranged attacks and STRENGTH the stat for damage rolls with bows and thrown weapons. Crossbows don't get bonus to damage under my system. Aiming in archery is mostly a mental exercise. Wisdom represents one's "eye" for making a projectile that may not travel in a straight line connect with a target that may not be standing still. Meanwhile, as professional archers can attest, you need to be strong to handle a powerful bow and maintain control of said bow. Medieval archers had massive pectorals and arms. Even their bones show the effects of such musculature. SO it only makes sense that your bow power will be scaled with your strength. I uptick the damage die for Crossbows by one level to make up for the fact they get no bonus to damage but I also make them all simple weapons, letting the weight and inconvenience of loading be the fact that determines what crossbow a player opts to use. So far, it has been a great success.
I, too, love Cutthroat Island. 🏴☠ I worked at a theater when it came out and got the "coming soon" promo poster. It hung in my office/computer room for years.
Why is all the French hate still a thing? It only started because the French didn't buy GWB's pretext for invading Iraq - which we now know was a crock, and on top of that, Iraq wasn't even adjacent to the country that actually WAS harbouring Osama Bin Laden. So, to summarise, France was right, America was wrong, and the French have the hottest goth chicks on the planet
Cutthroat Island was the first movie my girlfriend and I saw in college - we've since been married over 26 years! Whenever it comes up, we always remark on it if we don't actually watch it again.
Sounds fun, nice review - almost got me to revise my feelings on the various 'Borg' books, until you reminded me about the page layouts 😝 With regards to the ship combat part of the game, and concerns about players being reduced to 'observers' for a while, some years ago I started farming die rolling duties out to the players whenever I get the feeling they're in that situation. Did it in the Traveller game I ran over the weekend - had players rolling dice to figure out what the nearest ship to theirs was when they where being stalked by a stealth-ship, and had them rolling checks for both the nearby Droyne crew (as it turned out) and the stalking stealth ship, until there was more for them to do directly. I never told them what the NPC's +/-DM's where, but they where rolling the checks and building tension for themselves quite nicely! Kept 'em focused until we got to the action part of the sequence 😎

Excellent review! I love Pirate Borg and I agree with a lot of your points, particularly about the exclusion of the indigenous people, after all, the Caribbean name comes from the Caribes. Hey Seth, I don't know if you have ever played Trail of Cthulhu, I imagine that it is quite different than CoC.
I've played a little Trail of Cthulhu, including the new 2e Quickstart scenario. Not my jam. Because players don't roll to search for clues it sorta feels like the GM is telling a story while the players are sitting there. And the sorta currency of additional information makes players less inclined to push for more. I think it'd be fine for a convention 1-shot but its nothing I'd want to use as a Primary RPG
Excellent as always. I've never been a fan of those "roll for defense" while the npcs/monsters never roll to hit. It always feels to me like they auto hit unless you, the player, make a roll for defense and I never cared much for it. Red Markets has a similar system and I could never really get on board for that.

@@SSkorkowsky So very true! I had the same experience.
Thank you!
Literally just played this last weekend at Carnage Con in VT. Was great fun.
I am not a fan of Borg games. But I am always ready to watch a Seth video.
