  • Got a fresh clutch and a fresh rear tire on one of the most sought after "play bikes" to see how it can handle our 10 mile loop where the big bikes like to play. This little XR does not disappoint!

Love me an xr200 brilliant engine, just enough power to be fun but you can ride it all day, my wife had an ‘e’ model 1983 (twin shock) what a hoot! Wheelies for ever.

Check out this video…my good friend’s’83 XR200 (twin shock) that we got running for the first time since 2000 or 2001. We all had older 80’s bikes in the late 90’s as high school kids. He was the only one to keep his 200. I had an ‘87 and another friend had an ‘81.
A good friend’s first bike (1983 XR200) hasn’t run in over 20 years. In this video we fix that!

I had a 96 honda xl250r that I loved. I think it was one of the best bikes I have ever owned.

Thanks! We had some major trail maintenance to do after a recent storm as well. Luckily it was mostly small stuff

That bike is the proverbial mini tractor - good work in the riding ...... nice loop :-)

Thank you! It’s the ultimate sleeper bike of that era for sure…and even to a degree today.

I would take the bet that this has been the hardest this bike has been ridden. Good riding too.

Thank you! Pretty sure this has the original 41 year old front tire on it still too!

So it's pretty much an Xtrainer from 40yrs ago! That was damn impressive, I wonder how many early 80's bikes would do that well on that loop?

It just needs a little more power for the big hills…other than that it’s a featherweight with a low seat height and plenty of low end power so it’s easy to throw around. I may take the 79 PE250 on this loop after I get it running. Not really in the same class as an XR200 but it will be cool to compare them all on the same course.

@Garage2Trail any way you could get another rider and put your camera on their helmet following you? That might give us a chance at a perspective that shows the difficulty and terrain a bit better. This terrain looks similar to ours in NY and I know how the gopro just kills the true angles and makes everything look flat and easy. Great videos and channel, absolutely enjoy it!

Not a bad idea! You are correct about the camera never showing the way the terrain actually is. Never done justice.

@Garage2Trail would love to see and IT200 on that loop for comparison. Should be in its element I would think

@michaeldavison430 I agree! Or a KDX200…ITs and KDXs are hard to find for decent prices out around me.

Had one for years, never missed a beat, theres a bolt on the left sidecover near fly wheel, loosten it when bike idling for a split second, it will tighten timing chain

Yessir, you are correct! I loosened that bolt before the first ride and it quieted up that chain.

I've been looking for a video like this on this bike. Nice one mate. I've got an xr200r myself and I cant for the life of me figure out how to rebuild the 6 speed gearbox.

Thank you! Do you have a Honda workshop manual? They are pricey but better than the clymer or Haynes manuals for getting that deep into the motor. I can’t say I’ve had an xr200 bottom end torn apart but I did split the motor on a Honda MT250. I didn’t mess with the gears at all as I was able to keep them all in line as I replaced the seals. It doesn’t seem to be that bad if you have the right manual. Seems like the trickiest part would be getting the shifter forks aligned with the drum and gears. Wish I could offer more help!

I plan on messing with them this coming week to try and dial it in. Just got done with new brakes and front tire. Waiting on chain and sprockets too…slowly getting to 100% and ready for vintage hare scrambles!

@Garage2Trail man, seems like PA & NH are the places to be to get onto good & long trails. CT is pretty much deadsville minus Thomaston dam
