Let me explain a little bit about EXO's "Monster" MV. As the English lines in the song say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping ... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster," so the words are about acting like a monster: "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... I'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo." LOL As with everything EXO does, it is all part of their concept and storyline. So the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- also is supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake you see is supposed to mirror the beat of the song and theme of the MV. So, like a monster, the beat of the song kind of slithers like a snake as a metaphor for the way the guy slithers in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc. The snake is also red, which means it is supposed to represent something to do with the Red Force. The scenes where you see the red light are thought to be times when the Red Force has control and the scenes with the blue light are believed to be when EXO has the upper hand. And when you see scenes with purple that is supposed to be when the line between the Red Force and EXO are blurred and they are battling for control. Red and blue mixed together make purple. However, the lyrics of the song really have very little to do with the story in the MV. "Monster" is one example where, if you want to know what the song is about, you should look up an English translation of the lyrics. Because the lyrics in the song tell a different story than the story in the MV. In the song the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. So ... "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... you can call me Monster ... because I'm creeping in your heart babe." The song is about possessing a girl and using her up and throwing her away in the end, but the MV really is about EXO's origin story and about the fact that they are aliens from Planet Exo who have come to Earth on a mission. Some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life EXOs story takes on a whole other layer. Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or watch a live performance, really pay attention to the choreography so you might be able to find the parts where they use their powers. For example: when D.O. makes a gesture with his arms all the members are pulled toward him or pushed away from him because he is using his power of force/strength; When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water; when Xiumin moves across in front of the rest of the members you will see them all pause as if frozen because he used his power of frost/ice; and when Sehun stands in the middle of the group the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm because Sehun controls wind, etc. The part where they sit on the ground is supposed to look like a sundial and it represents the passing of time. As part of EXOs storyline they get their strength and power from an eclipse so they are connected to planetary and solar phenomenon. This is one of the best examples of how EXO continues their concept and story in everything they do, including in their choreography. Everything, down to the most minute detail, is expertly thought out and planned to always stick to their concept and story. Fun fact: At the end of the MV when they are saying "Creepin', Creepin' Creeping ..." the dance move they are doing is the signature dance move the creep from the 1990s American girl group TLC from their song "Creep." Do you see the creep in EXO's moves? And you should also make note that "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster," so when you watch "Lotto," just keep in mind that what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after or in conjunction with the events in "Lotto", and both MVs might make a little more sense to you then. How "Monster" and "Lotto" tie into EXOs larger storyline is a little open ended, but I am pretty sure, that "Lotto" is the prequel to "Monster." So, if you pay attention, I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are maybe sort of undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force. "Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Forces or the bad guys, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So, that's why you see in "Lotto," and continued in "Monster," the members are fighting against the FBI or police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. For some reason the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. But in the end, as you see in "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Forces, etc. If you want to follow EXO's storyline, some other scenes to take note of: You see Lay crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents that the members of EXO have taken down, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured. This will be important to remember, but I will explain more when you see "Lotto." Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I believe in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together. For instance, you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai -- Kai's alter ego clone that was created by the Red Forced and introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV -- who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation, he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened and what needs to be done to fix things, etc. Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order and everything has a tendency to blend together. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.

I know I’m odd in this but MAMA is one of my favourite EXO songs. I love the almost Gregorian chant, Kai’s screamo section and the rock vibes. You need to check put their b-.Sides. They are truly one of the best in terms of vocals and harmonies. Coming from a kpop fan since 2009, EXO is one of the groups I couldn’t believe how unreal they sound vocally.
My KPOP top 3 probably (really difficult to pick): 1. Eternally by TXT (Tomorrow xTogether) 2. Faded in My Last Song by NCT 3. Nectar by WayV And if by chance y'all would be interested in checking out TXT's music I'd recommend listening to 'PUMA', 'Angel Or Devil' and 'New Rules' (tho this one doesn't have a music video) TXT are a more younger group (the members are the same age with nct dream) that debuted in early 2019 but that aside they also put out straight fire 🔥 The reason I'm not recommending 'Eteranlly' as a first impression is because 1) The music video is a whole 19 min short film and the track is not fully displayed in it and 2) the track itself can be very confusing and disorienting without any context.
Fair warning: a lot of information below lol once I got started I couldn't stop I appreciate that you guys are giving kpop and all of the different groups a chance during your kpopathon. I find that kpop is a blend of different genres that are mixed together in order to entertain the audience. Most groups and most songs have a pop based sound with a little hip-hop or r&b infused in them (this is the case for most groups under SM entertainment to me, though I do find NCT to be more of the opposite of this while still maintaining a SM sound). You can find many different groups in kpop, there well over 100 groups out, and there will always be something that suits your taste. I'll even go so far as to say that every group you listen to will have at least 1 song you like even if you don't particularly vibe with the group as a whole because they experiment with sounds so much. Here are some groups I recommend with one song that I feel might be up you guys alley. I'll try to include a mix of both rap and r&b so you can both have something you enjoy. Rap heavy: (I know more groups for this genre because most groups will experiment more with rap then with r&b) MCND -They fairly new but they do have a lot of rappers in the group and in their songs: Top Gang, Ice Age, or Spring or my recommendations - Ateez - They have 2 rappers and though both of their styles are different they compliment each other so well: Thanxx, Say My Name, or Hala Hala are my recommendations - Monsta X - again only 2 rappers but they are talented and it shows when they rap: shoot out, follow, or beautiful are my recommendations (though all their songs are good to be honest) - Stray Kids - amazing rap line again very talented and very diverse in terms of sound: God's menu, victory song, double knot, or district 9 are my recommendations - Everglow: a girl group with some good rappers I wouldn't say there songs are infused with a lot of rap but they sprinkle in more than most girl groups: la di da, dun dun, and adios are my recommendations - Blackpink - 2 vocalist and 2 rappers make for a great group: how you like that, ddu du ddu du, and kill this love are my recommendations - BTS - in my opinion these guys have the best rap line, however, they don't focus on the rapping much anymore if it's not a rap line specific song so it's mostly lyric videos for them if you want rap heavy: mic drop (does have a video), ddaeng, tear, ugh, and cyphers 1-4 are my recommendations - you should also check out oneus (any song will do lol) R&B heavy: (I'm going to focus to focus more on songs and soloist for this one cause most r&b tracks are b sides if they aren't a soloist and not all of these have videos) - exo - ya ya ya - shinee - replay - red velvet - bad boy - Jay park - all I wanna do - Dean - Instagram - taeyang - eyes nose lips - Hyolyn - dally - bts - save me - bts - singularity - Dean - Bonnie and Clyde - Red velvet - kingdom come - bts - home - baekyhun - un village - baekyhun - candy - nct u - baby don't stop - nct 127 - baby don't like it - red velvet - automatic - Crush - cereal - Loco & hwasa - don't - Dean ft. For some reason the members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. But in the end, as you see in "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape before they are taken to jail and/or captured by the Red Forces, etc.
If you want to follow EXO's storyline, some other scenes to take note of: You see Lay crouched in the middle of what looks like a pile of people -- I'm not sure whether these are the FBI agents that the members of EXO have taken down, or if these are members of the Red Force -- and I think he is checking to make sure they are OK and possibly trying to use his power of healing to fix things and heal the injured. This will be important to remember, but I will explain more when you see "Lotto."
Because some theories believe that EXO are traveling between time periods and dimensions, I believe in "Monster" they also might be showing how some of the members are arriving on scene at different moments in the timeline of events that are taking place in the MV -- the members don't necessarily arrive at the location together. For instance, you also see Kai standing on or near a giant pile of people as well, and he seems to be standing over them. Some have pointed to this as possibly showing evil X-EXO Kai -- Kai's alter ego clone that was created by the Red Forced and introduced in EXO's "Obsession" MV -- who has done something bad, but I think this may be showing good EXO Kai, who has just shown up at that moment, observing what has taken place. Because Kai has the power of teleportation, he is the one that is in charge of bringing the members together and traveling between time and space, so I think he has shown up from a different time or place and is now trying to figure out what has happened and what needs to be done to fix things, etc.
Unfortunately, as you can see, what makes EXO's storyline even more difficult to follow is the fact that nothing is ever in chronological order and everything has a tendency to blend together. So you really have to pay close attention to every detail, to even begin to make connections.

I know I’m odd in this but MAMA is one of my favourite EXO songs. I love the almost Gregorian chant, Kai’s screamo section and the rock vibes. I have always liked when very disparate genres get blended especially as well as as MAMA does.
As well it’s a good introduction to the EXO storyline. If I had heard it at debut I’d have been into kpop from then rather than just before NCT 127 superhuman.

This is, hands down, my favorite EXO song! The way the verse builds up the tension, and then opens up in the chorus is so cathartic! Also, even tho' I'm ARMY, you could argue that EXO has the best vocalists in K-pop.

Firstly speaking from personal experience having interacted with so many of them, NCTzens are among the most easy going, helpful and friendly bunch so they certainly won’t be upset, in fact the opposite since the more reactions the merrier :))
Both are awesome groups in their own distinctive way - as you pointed out about EXO having a more mature theme, the members debuted earlier and are a little older than NCT (with one just recently receiving the joy of a beautiful newborn baby). Outside being together in SuperM, they and all SM idols actually have strong family bond and support each other...and so do all the groups’ fandoms always support each other. EXO also performs amazing in concert..they have sold out the Tokyo Dome which seats from 55,000-71,000 depending on the seating..and they have sold out quite a few times🤭One of their best shows is their EXO PLANET #3 -EXO'rDIUM at Tokyo Dome in Japan (2017). Nothing like it. It's worth watching!

TXT are a more younger group (the members are the same age with nct dream) that debuted in early 2019 but that aside they also put out straight fire 🔥
The reason I'm not recommending 'Eteranlly' as a first impression is because 1) The music video is a whole 19 min short film and the track is not fully displayed in it and 2) the track itself can be very confusing and disorienting without any context.
Fair warning: a lot of information below lol once I got started I couldn't stop
I appreciate that you guys are giving kpop and all of the different groups a chance during your kpopathon. I find that kpop is a blend of different genres that are mixed together in order to entertain the audience.
Most groups and most songs have a pop based sound with a little hip-hop or r&b infused in them (this is the case for most groups under SM entertainment to me, though I do find NCT to be more of the opposite of this while still maintaining a SM sound).
You can find many different groups in kpop, there well over 100 groups out, and there will always be something that suits your taste. I'll even go so far as to say that every group you listen to will have at least 1 song you like even if you don't particularly vibe with the group as a whole because they experiment with sounds so much.
Here are some groups I recommend with one song that I feel might be up you guys alley. I'll try to include a mix of both rap and r&b so you can both have something you enjoy.
Rap heavy: (I know more groups for this genre because most groups will experiment more with rap then with r&b)
MCND -They fairly new but they do have a lot of rappers in the group and in their songs: Top Gang, Ice Age, or Spring or my recommendations
- Ateez - They have 2 rappers and though both of their styles are different they compliment each other so well: Thanxx, Say My Name, or Hala Hala are my recommendations
- Monsta X - again only 2 rappers but they are talented and it shows when they rap: shoot out, follow, or beautiful are my recommendations (though all their songs are good to be honest)
- Stray Kids - amazing rap line again very talented and very diverse in terms of sound: God's menu, victory song, double knot, or district 9 are my recommendations
- Everglow: a girl group with some good rappers I wouldn't say there songs are infused with a lot of rap but they sprinkle in more than most girl groups: la di da, dun dun, and adios are my recommendations
- Blackpink - 2 vocalist and 2 rappers make for a great group: how you like that, ddu du ddu du, and kill this love are my recommendations
- BTS - in my opinion these guys have the best rap line, however, they don't focus on the rapping much anymore if it's not a rap line specific song so it's mostly lyric videos for them if you want rap heavy: mic drop (does have a video), ddaeng, tear, ugh, and cyphers 1-4 are my recommendations
- you should also check out oneus (any song will do lol)
R&B heavy: (I'm going to focus to focus more on songs and soloist for this one cause most r&b tracks are b sides if they aren't a soloist and not all of these have videos)
