  • For episode 22 from Day 2 of the 2024 Expo, we move from discussing line boring an R07 engine block to demonstrating how it’s done.
We return to Automotive Specialists Racing Engines in Concord, NC to join Jeff Dorton and one of his machinists with a NASCAR Chevy R07 block loaded on a Rottler F69A. The guys then take us through the align boring steps beginning with the main caps, then an establishing pass and a final pass for a block bored to within less than 1/10,000th of variation from front to back.
Along the way they provide some tips (look for chip build-up, spend more time on the three center saddles which have a tendency to crown), and what to look for in the finished product.
After the demo, we move back in-studio where Joe Castello and Lake Speed Jr are joined by the Dortons, CWT Industries’ Randy Neal and Rottler’s Ryan Thompson for a discussion on how engine building is rapidly becoming a rewarding high-tech career for a new generation who aren’t interested in sitting at a desk.

As an oldtime engine machine shop guy, that is amazing......A local shop near me just got one of those machines......I need to go see it in operation

Its amazing to me that each main is done with the machine relocating each time instead of the old method where its done off one solid axis/bar. Blows my mild the machine can relocate that accurately and fast.

Good job on teaching an up and coming youngster the trade of machining. And it's good to see a youngster ready and willing to learn! Here's a video of an R07 SBC at Tony Oddo Engineering

Wouldn't doing alignment with torque plates bolted to the block make it more true?
