  • Last year I found a skull, along with other human bones, on the foreshore out towards the Estuary. I reported them to the police who collected them on the next tide and kept me informed throughout the investigation. Their radiocarbon dating suggested the bones were around 250 years old, which means it's possible they belonged to a prisoner from one of the prison hulks that was moored in the area at the time. After posting the progress of the skull online I was contacted by a number of experts including Professor Turi King, who is best known for genetically identifying the skeleton of Richard III. Turi has offered her services and those of Leicester University to genetically analyse Fred's remains to see what we can find out about him (or her).
I had the chance to chat to Turi a week or so ago about her work and what we can hope to discover about the skull.
