Notice how you'll never hear a Southerner say "the best way to beat the heat in the Southern summer is to go up North"
But some Texans go to the mountains in New Mexico or Colorado
I recently moved north and the headache of these people make wearing a wool sweater in he south a nice evening

I live in the “Summer Golf Capital of the U.S.” (northern Michigan) Stay home! We have enough cone lickers and trunk slammers to last us all year. Remember, you just LOVE living in the South. Of course you have to put up with: bugs, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, floods, heat AND humidity. All we put up with is snow… Also, snow means we have Green Summers and lots of water to swim in and drink!
I'm guessing that's because the heat has cooked their brains to the point where they can't reason. 😵💫 So they sit there in a sweaty stupor 🥵and accept their fate.🤭
As a Floridian, when you see a complaining tourist, no matter how hot it is, you say: yeah, it's not even really hot yet.

We do the same thing with the cold in the winter here in Chicago. It could be a wind chill of 10 below but we'll show off for the tourists. We might even go out in shorts just to freak people out LOL
Anything less than 90 is relatively comfortable. 100 is tolerable in the shade. Over that, now it's hot!

I still live in the south, but several years ago I lived in the deep south...I mean *deep* south. Walking around outside in the summer was like having a steaming wet wool blanket draped over your body Casper the Ghost style. Fans merely moved the sweltering moisture around. Even after opening the car to "let the hot out", climbing into the car brought on the beginning of suffocation; you learned to crank up the car with your head hanging outside so you could breath, hitting full blast on the AC, rolling down all the windows, then driving for a good 5 minutes before you were able to roll the windows up. Swimming pools were hot tubs, popsicles survived 3 minutes in the heat, and you never *ever* turned on the oven between May and Mid-November. This is why grilling and every type of salad you can imagine are so popular in the south.
You got 3 whole minutes of popsicle time?? Lucky 😂

Truth. Except here the Popsicles are fully melted once you remove them from the freezer. So you get about 0 seconds of popsicle time

I'm from Georgia but now live in the UK. Which means that I can provide advice on how to survive the summer in the southern US as well as southern England. In the US, don't go outside. In the UK, also don't go outside because you will get a sunburn while simultaneously freezing to death.

You must have missed last summer in the UK.. We had three heatwaves up in the 34 to 38 *Celsius* range.. I live in an unshaded top floor bedsit.. Nearly died of heatstroke.. I spent most of the last heatwave laid on the floor with a fan at my head and a fan at my feet, with a bottle of ice wrapped in a towel shoved in alternating armpits to keep my body temperature down! .. Really hoping this summer is less brutal!
Oh my word. I was a military brat born in England. My ex and I went back on vacation a few years back. At Heathrow, they welcomed me back. When I said something.. they said pardon me and asked what part of England my accent was from. I smiled and said southern😂
As a Canadian I often wonder how you guys survive down there. Then again, you probably wonder the same thing about our winters.

I was born in the South but lived in the Rocky Mtn's for over 20 years...I miss those winters! I find getting warm much easier than cooling down in the south
form Minnesota here, my preferred saying is that 'you can dress warmer in the winter, but you can't dress down far enough without going to jail in the summer'

The key here is you don’t. You just kinda melt and then reconstitute in winter
Amen to the hot car interiors. I pulled up to a stoplight one summer, next to a lady who was wearing oven mitts to protect her hands from the hot steering wheel.
.....I guess that's why they make windshield screens to block out the sun, maybe roll the window down a tiny bit, have cloth seat covers and throw a towel over the steering wheel. A small cooler with cold water wouldn't hurt.
Just learned today to keep a blanket over the baby seat when we are out of the car. That hot plastic could have taken skin off
@@samanthagraves6839 Try a cotton bath towel, it seems to work better and you can wet it down around the neck if someone gets in trouble with the heat.
Also keeps the baby cool while you’re inside shopping!
My mom used to cook roasts in the car. Keep in mind this was the 70's-80's and cars were made of all metal and got hotter, so it was literally a giant slow cooker. You could buy these oven bags. She'd put the roast, some potatoes, and veggies in there. Then leave it in the back window while she was at work. Never gave her or the kids food poisoning and the meat and potatoes were always fork tender by dinner time.

Yep....this is why the pools (and lakes, creeks, spring fed ponds, rivers, and the Gulf) are always crowded in the South during the summer. 😅
Be careful and use waterproof sunscreen. I got the worst sunburn of my life in a pool for 4 hours.

I hate the way Northerners make fun of us Texans for freaking out if we get a little snow/ice, which we do. However we do have the unique ability to slide across black leather seats in a 115 degree car....in shorts. Now that is impressive.
Northerners panic when the high temp hits the mid 90s. Which we Texans call “early Spring”.

Please, it gets hot as hell in the north . Not Phoenix hot , but hot, muggy & nasty . But you’re prob right … the south is nastier.
No joke though do take the heat seriously and any signs of heat exhaustion should be dealt with immediately. I got heat stroke as a teenager and could have very well ended up in emergency because by the time I knew I wasn't feeling right it was too late for me to do anything about it. I was fortunate that an adult chaperone noticed and intervened because my brain was completely disoriented and confused
Heat stroke is no joke, seeing purple and yellow and passing out sucks!
Yeah, and as you get older, it happens faster, and takes longer to get over. As I found out assembling a gazebo the summer I turned 62.

When you stop sweating and get goosebumps in the heat, something is seriously wrong.
I lived for over 20 years in Central Texas with NO air conditioning. (Yes, we were crazy.) We did it with ceiling fans, opened, screened windows and a large attic fan on the side of house that sucked out the hot air (although that didn’t lower the temp). Ice, fans of all types and yes, popsicles were must haves. And showers. I showered twice a day, just to cool off. I really enjoy living in a house with HVAC now.
It was cooler until all the Yankees cemented San Antonio, Austin and the Hill Country.
Yes ma'am and when we had a swamp cooler it made it even more humid. I won't complain about it, ever! I will take heat and humidity over miserable cold any day.

Grew up in dallas without ac. Used to sleep on the floor in the hallway half neked with my brother in front of a box fan. Fast forward many years later. I only turned my window unit on when it got to 90 degrees inside, until i got my ac fixed. Fast forward ac is broke and too old to repair. Back to the box fan and ceiling fan. Good times. Yes your brain will cook.

Regarding parked cars: it’s pretty well known that the best parking spot isn’t the closest. It’s the one with the shade. Who cares how far it is? You know it’s bad when even the farthest spots are taken. Next, you cover your steering wheel. Then, you tilt your seat forward, creating more shade for the seat. You can even cover your seat if more shade is needed, or you are unable to tilt it.
Throw white towels over the seat. And use window shades. One in the front windshield and one in the back.
You bring your carport with you... your roof rack with your awning has extenders to keep the sun off the car... you also park with the heavily tinted back window of the car towards the sun and cover the back window with cloth as well.
In Phoenix you go outside before you leave & open the windows of your car etc .black cars are for idiots and you’ll walk 2blocks to get a parking spot w shade . Leaving Phoenix was the best decision of my life.

I am from Brazil and live in the US. What you described is exactly what Rio de Janeiro (and São Paulo, but for fewer months) is. That's why one of Rio's nicknames is Hell de Janeiro.
It also gets quite hot in India. The Indian method is to stay inside in the middle of the day.
During the British occupation of India, the natives started saying "Only rabid dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun "
An Asian trick for distracting yourself from the heat is to eat spicy food. Apparently sweating from eating food with peppers and / or chilis feels better than
sweating because of the humidity.
We also eat spicy foods in the South. Food isn't spicy enough for me until beads of sweat break out under my eyes and along my nose, my hair is drenched and plastered to my head, and my shirt is soaked through on my chest and shoulders.
We want to stay inside but the adults say we need to get fresh air. The heat and humidity in Louisiana kills ac units.

Central Alabama here. The man who repairs air conditioners is awarded the same respect as a doctor.
The only time I’ve been to Florida was in July. We went to the beach, and somehow the sand went from merely surface-of-the-sun to hellish in the hour or so we were there (we also saw a thunderstorm). I did an agonizing 100-yard dash to the walkway, only to learn that composite material is hotter than sand. I literally walked on my toes on the shadows on the walkway.
“Dumb Yankee; ya shoulda worn beach shoes,” I can hear someone say. I approached this as someone who never went to an actual beach until I was in college, and then only in the upper Midwest. I’ve learned my lesson: don’t go to Florida in July. At least that’s _my_ takeaway.
Even Florida doesn't want to be in Florida in July 😂 the *worst* month is August tho. And fun fact, it's warm enough to swim in FL by March/April ish and stays warm well into fall- I had my last swim of the year that was a pleasant temperature just before Thanksgiving. 😁

There was a 5’ nurse(?) shark swimming parallel to the shore about 4’ out; it was trapped in one of those little troughs the waves make. It eventually found a low place and swam away.
And a picnic at the beach means you’re eating sand. No thanks
That's why you go to the Gulf Coast. The sand is as white as snow, and it reflects sunlight, so it stays cool. Just know that the sun will be reflected directly into your eyes at all times, and no pair of sunglasses will protect you. You will get one of the worst headaches of your life. You learn to keep your eyes closed until you get into the water.
I’m a rare southerner who loves cold and cooler weather (especially fall) but i can’t move lol (the Mrs don’t wanna leave Mississippi) plus I work a night job on a fish farm and summers suck for me

The best place in the South is the mountains of Western NC. It's only hot about three weeks out of the summer but the rest of the time is cool breeze, no humidity, and warm weather, some rain, and cool night air that you can open the windows to feel as you sleep. I have no air conditioning. Haven't had any in my house for sixty years. Just need a fan during those three weeks of hot.

I like to take a make-believe vacation in the middle of the summer (late June/ear/y August). Pick a weekend that will be cloudy. Stock up on hot chocolate and apple cider. Mull the cider (you know, cloves, cinnamon, etc.) Turn down the AC. Get a Fall scented plug in, and plug that thing in. Watch Christmas movies and play Christmas music. (I like the music from the Charlie Brown special.) Most important, _stay inside _*_all_*_ weekend_ . Pretend it is late fall/early winter. I find "splitting" summer into two parts works for me.

I once spent a Texas summer in a mid 80s Chrysler with padded velour seats, broken AC and broken power windows. I would open the car door at every stoplight to avoid heatstroke.
I am from New England & lived in FL 5 years. I only went to the beach twice & did not get relief. The ocean was like bath water & even though I had on sunscreen, I burned to a crisp. I stayed in 99% of the time & then moved back to New Hampshire. I giggle when people think the heat or humidity is bad here. I have yet to feel any hot day that even comes close to the oppressive weather down south.
I’m a native Floridian, and you’re right - the beach (in the middle of the day) is no relief. It’s horrible. The trick is to only go in the very early morning or late afternoon, and only stay for an hour or so. Always avoid the hottest part of the day. This is the only way our family does the beach.
I moved from Va to Tx so humidity went from 90% in the summer to 6% and they would complain - I'd just laugh and laugh and laugh.
But then, we don’t shovel Sunshine 🎈❣️
I live in Michigan but have family in Missouri and Arkansas. So every summer growing up we went there for summer vacation. I was a kid and the heat never bothered me. Loved every second of it. My family and every person I spent time with there was awesome. I miss those days. A few years ago in late June I got the chance to go to Key West for a week. I've been a subscriber of It's a Southern Thing for years. So I knew the tips shared on this channel. Thank you to you all. We took a siesta every day in the hottest part of the day. Got to meet alot of great people and loved the whole trip. Thank you again for all the information you share on this channel.

Counterintuitive tip: there are UPSIDES to going out in the worst of the Southern midday heat. It burns off the worst of the humidity, and it stuns the mosquitoes & gnats into partial dormancy.

Before you let the car air out, take the garden hose and wet the car down, making sure all windows are closed tight first. At least once all over after the hot water in the hose is cleared. Between the cooler water and the evaporation, the car temperature will drop. Spray the radiator also, to both precool and to wash some of the dead bugs and such off.
I laughed through all of this. Just because it’s very true! We spent a good portion of our tax return to get our AC fixed just so we could survive the summer heat. Once summer hits, it’s here to stay for a long time!! Seems like it never lets up.
Aha to have it so easy, try a double coat of SPF 80 and getting sunburn wile siting on your couch behind tinted windows with the curtains drawn, that's how we live in Queensland.
To BBQ/Grill we just uncover the hotplate turn around to get the meat out of the Fridge or Esky (Cooler) and by the time we turn back around the Hotplate should be up to cooking heat, no Gas, coals or wood fire required.

Tip: To appreciate 105° 100% humidity and absolutely no wind go to Talladega and watch a race. When I went it was 132° in the infield and reportedly 170° in the stands. That was HOT. Made home feel cold by comparison.

There was some guy about 75 yards away that set up a tent with a generator and an AC selling time in the tent. I don't know what his rates were but I'm sure he made a killing.
As someone who lived in Charleston, SC for 4 years, trust me when I say that a breeze in the summer is not your friend. When it's that humid outside, the wind makes it feel like you're inside a convection oven
This was fun and FWIW, the description of what summer is like in the South after a rainstorm is quite similar to what it's like in July and August in the Mid-Atlantic region. I've often described the air after such a storm as akin to a warm, damp, sticky sponge. Before I finally moved to a Condo with Central AC, I used to dread those storms for this reason above all others. Now, it makes me appreciate how fortunate we are to be spared that sticky unpleasantness.
Its the same in Central NY where I grew up in the summer... or at least a couple weeks of it. When my relatives ask what its like in Florida I say "You know those 3 weeks at the end of August when its insufferably hot and humid? Thats pretty much May - October here. "

I had a pair of sandals that I wore almost everyday day aside from work.. for maybe 3 years before they wore out. I still have a tan line from those sandals and it's been 4 years since. 😂

Growing up in New Orleans and the Florida/Alabama panhandle, ive learned two things
1. Biscuits and gravy are a delicacy
2. Southern summers are either "this is hot but im not miserable" or "this is miserably hot and i am soaked in sweat"
From central MS, it's been pleasant lately, highs in the mid 80s and 80% humidity. I'm getting all my outdoor stuff done before summer hits.
Here in the lower part of South Carolina, it ain't summer until the weather man says it has been 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity for at least 6 days in a row.
I am a Southern girl, born and raised in South Carolina, before the days where AC was in homes. AC was brand new and only at places like the new, indoor mall (which was a big deal - who had ever been to an indoor mall before?). We had an attic fan which worked pretty well until it never got below 85 to 90, even at night, and the humidity was above 90%. The only thing that attic fan was sucking through the house at night was unbearably hot, sweltering, slightly cooler by a degree or two air. Now I live in Iowa where we are just getting past two blizzards and a snowstorm in under 10 days that left us with 2 1/2 feet of snow all while giving us minus 15 to 20 degree temps and that doesn't include the wind chill. However, unlike the south, they actually plow the roads here so you can get around pretty quickly after the storm subsides. On the plus side all that cold weather kills thing like bugs and insects. No fire ants here 😊

Many try to survive the Southern Summer, few actually do successfully avoid "ALL" of its perils.
Don't forget to harvest the sun by growing veggies. I am a northern transplant and I will never go back because the growing conditions are so much better down here. Plus gardening keeps me outside and helps me get used to the heat.

Also, note: The part about winter does not apply to those of us who live in the Ozark Mountain Range. It’s not quite as bad as the Midwest, but our winters can still be fairly brutal. Last winter, the temperature dropped to 3 degrees Fahrenheit with a blizzard that froze us over for at least a week. The year before that, we had at least two snowfalls of at least 1 foot of snow each. Or was that 2020/2021?
Regardless, because we’re so used to the heat, we don’t take well to the cold.
That said, I really have seen it hit 90 in February and not cool down for the rest of the year. We get winter in the Ozarks. Just not consistently.
The only black eye I ever got was from a homemade slip n slide. Fun times 😂

I guess we are the exception we have no AC down here in our south Alabama home just box fans in the windows .We do however live on a river and have huge old oak trees surrounding the house which makes a huge difference in the heat levels .My wife has no issues with either heat or cold having been a landscaper /arborist for 30 years so is used to both in extremes .She will stay out on the lake at night in 30 degree weather in a long sleeve shirt and jeans crappie fishing .I will be sitting in the truck freezing with the heat running .It is never too cold for her .She was raised in remote Alaska for a few years also which I guess would account for the cold not being an issue for her .Down here she was raised in the swamps so humidity isn't that bad for her either to endure .It must be nice to be able to do this .The best thing to avoid the bugs in her experience is fresh basil crushed and rubbed on the skin not bug spray .It even keeps gnats and sand flies away .You can soak it and make a spray also and it does smell a lot better than the bug sprays on the market .
I need to try the basil thing! I really hate the smell and feel of bug spray. And if it’s not really working then what’s the point?

Another way to survive the southern heat. You have to be part lizard.😂❤❤
To turn on your car in the South: Open the car. Leave the door open. Stick right foot in car on brake WITHOUT putting your leg on the seat. Start ignition. Turn on a/c full blast WITHOUT closing car door. Stand there like a fool for 10 minutes. Only then will it be safe to slide into the seat, unless you have really sensitive skin.
Here in N. Carolina it's so humid...we call it "the air you wear".
I retired from Phoenix, Arizona and moved to Billings, Montana. In December we hit -24°F. Saturday, Phoenix hit °118°F. As my Dad would say in the winter you can always put on another sweater. In Arizona, you can only take off so many clothes before it becomes a felony. Stay cooler Phoenix.
This is the truest thing ever.
I have to leave my car out in the parking lot all day. So I've now got those stick on sunshades for all the windows, even the triangular windows (turns out that Walmart sell a sunshade you can cut to fit and then stick it on the window) --- except for the windshield where I put a mylar sunshade. It really does help keep the car from turning into an oven if you have no choice but to park your car in the sun all day.
When I lived in Dallas, the first parking spaces to be used were the ones with shade.

I’m a transplant from ‘up north’. My first summer here in Georgia. I couldn’t believe how hot and humid it gets. I’ve lived in Macon for 14 years and I still can’t get used to the heat and humidity. I love it here in Georgia though and I’m glad I moved down here.
So glad that I live in western Michigan. The summers are great, and the winters are relatively mild.
Wow, your survival tips even work in Michigan (except we only have 5 months of insane heat & high humidity - even before it rains).
Thanks I have already been doing 1/2 of these, but we have the Great Lakes with icebergs that don't finish melting until July to go jump in also.

We are on water restrictions and they have all pools and splash pads closed for the summer. They should be able to fill some of the pools at least with all the tears of people in the area after they heard the news.

I live in southwest Louisiana, for relief from the heat of summer we go to places like Arkansas or Tennessee, maybe even northern Alabama or Georgia.

In south Arkansas we now go from summer to two weeks of Arctic deep freeze with the accompaning snow and ice. Then straight back in the sauna. Last December it from mid 70s one day to negative temps the next with 20 inches of snow. I swear somebody in the south angered the weather gods but good.

In the South, there are only 2 seasons…it’s either hot or not so hot (the two weeks we get of what them Yankees call “Winter.”)
When I was a kid, my middle school took a trip to a waterpark and one of my flip flops broke so I had to walk barefoot for a few hours. When we were finally herded back onto the bus, I had quarter-sized blisters on the bottom of my feet from being burned by the pavement. I learned to always pack an extra pair or at least have enough money leftover for emergencies, because no shoes during Texas summers qualifies as an emergency.
I’m from Colorado Springs and the snow is everything. We have snow and hail heck even when it rains in the summer it’s cold plus feels amazing! I moved to Cleveland tn and I don’t ever leave the house. I keep it at 62° year round and people who come in my house freak out from how cold it is and ask me for a blanket… you bunch of babies lol
Good advice. Also, handle your chores in the morning. You put it off until the temp hits "broil", that's on you.

My dad learned not touching the steering wheel the hard way in the early 2000s. He touched it when he got in the car after our visit to Hurricane Harbor. To be fair we forgot to cover the wheel during our stay. And I burnt my soles walking on the cement at Schlitterbahn! Learned my lesson right quick. 😅
