    H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    We're up to week 221 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on October 28, 1977, and originally aired in late November of 1977.
    (Now that I've passed episode 1100, I'm really starting to feel like my time with Match Game '7x is drawing to a close... The Star Wheel is coming in 1246, Richard's last show is 1285, the final curtain is 1455...)
    Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and once again they're joined by two very familiar MG family members and another new guest panelist:
    ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg sticks around for her 69th week (of 90). Fannie of course enjoys an excellent track record in the head-to-head match (48.4%). Perhaps consecutive weeks will work in her favor when it comes to being chosen for the H/H: this coming crop of contestants were probably backstage to witness her recent attempts and match.
    ~~~Orson Bean is back for his 15th week of only 16 total. Orson last graced the panel in episodes 991-995, and in some respects, he's the "King" of the H/H since he sits at the very top of the leader board with a 100% match rate! (But since he's only played a grand total of four times, that score comes with a grain of salt.) Now that he's sadly down to his final 10 shows (his farewell week will be 1446-1450), it'll be interesting to see if he gets to play again. His last week will be a "Star Wheel" week of course, so there's a decent chance he'll have a shot then. But since it's also the next-to-last week of the show, I'm in absolutely no hurry to get there!
    ~~~Last but not least, Connie Stevens makes her Match Game '7x debut (pucker up, Connie). She will participate for a total of three weeks before the show ends.
    Well, King Richard's crown got slightly dented last week, as he was chosen for fewer than half the H/H questions (two out of five). The last week that happened was way back in 851-855 when he was chosen for two out of seven. In fact, in 31 of the intervening weeks (between 851-855 and last week), he was the *only* celebrity chosen for the H/H for the entire week.
    Reviewing the past 75 weeks, Richard has played *322* times. Everyone else combined played *52* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 11, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an amazing *86.1%* of all the H/H questions over these past 75 weeks. (Despite having the poorest track record of all the leader board celebs except Bert Convy.)
    Richard starts off the week with a very good track record (having matched 42.2% of his H/H questions), and he's been within striking distance of surpassing Brett's accuracy score (42.3%) for weeks now. The two have traded places over a dozen times over the course of the show so far, and despite the fact that Brett has spent more time ahead of Richard than vice versa, I consider them basically a draw when it comes to their likelihood of matching in the H/H. I used to be much more likely to match Brett, but after watching Richard play 740 H/H questions, I tend to match him a lot more now...
    Anyway, after last week's surprising and entertaining H/H week (Fannie 1/2, Richard 1/2, Charles 1/1), I'll hold my breath and hope for a little more of the same this week. But somehow, I sort of doubt it. If every week was like last week, they never would have instituted the Star Wheel. But since that Star Wheel is coming in 1246, it leads me to suspect that we'll get plenty more all-Richard H/H weeks to come...
    At any rate, my #1 wish for the coming week is to see Orson play again. Win or lose, I'd love to see him answer a H/H question and add some weight to his stats! He's one of my favorite first-seat guest panelists, and given this is the last week we'll see him until the show's next-to-last week, I've got my fingers crossed.
    ~~~Today's action:
    A well-timed "Hump" from Fannie hands our champion her third victory.
    *Today's audience match question: "Vitamin________"*
    (My thoughts: C, B, D)
    The celebs: Richard (C), Brett (Pill), Charles (E)
    The choice: C
    The answers: E, Pills, C - Wow, kudos to the celebs who suggested all three answers and in order of popularity!
    Our champion chose Richard for her first H/H and matched. Then, in a bit of a surprise, she chose Charles for her second H/H and matched again! I'd love it if she chose a third celeb and matched, because that happens extremely rarely. I can recall only one champion ever scoring matches with each of the three regulars...
    She returns to Richard.
    Stats: Richard has matched 114 of his 263 most recent attempts (43.3%), 53 of his last 123 attempts (43.1%), 34 of his last 79 attempts (43.0%), and 6 of his past 15 attempts (40.0%). His overall success rate is *42.2%* and this is his 741st attempt so far.
    For the sake of comparison: Orson has matched all 4 of his 4 attempts (100%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Fannie has matched 15 of her 31 attempts (48.4%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 312 of his 740 attempts (42.2%). Connie Stevens has not yet answered a H/H question.
    *Today's H/H question: "College________"*
    (Student comes to mind first, and it seems pretty generic. College courses, campus, degree, education, (the old) college try, etc. all sound reasonable, but not nearly as common as college student.)
    The contestant's eyes are shut as she tries to think. Richard is already writing. A glance toward Fannie as he files his card. He looks reasonably confident today, no shaking his head or shrugging his shoulders as he sometimes does when he's torn between two answers.
    "Graduate," she tells Gene, receiving a polite round of applause. Meh. It's definitely a valid answer, and she's got a shot at it, but it just doesn't inspire me as an obvious answer.
    But we'll let King Richard be the judge...
    No wasting time. "There were many," he says (aren't there usually?), whipping out "Education." Yet another good answer. This time I like Richard's better than the contestant's.
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts).
    Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts).
    Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.4% (15 wins in 31 attempts).
    Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts).
    Richard - 42.1% (312 wins in 741 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1101, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
