I'm with you Brie, I love the taller varieties on all the flower plants, why all the stubby plants, right?! Thank you for taking us along on this tour and for sharing all your knowledge and thoughts ❤

They are growing a variety of echinacea that has that top hat flower in the center. I’m sure it was something that came out and they decided that’s cool. I personally am not a fan of that. Powdery mildew is a problem with my monarda. I grow a ton of single flowering plants and lots of pollinator friendly plants. I buy my Rex begonias at the big box stores in the summer and I take them indoors in the winter. I prefer to grow the hardier longer lasting penstemon. That size butterfly bush is perfect size for window boxes and other containers. I adore salvias and grow at least 20 varieties and always make room for more because in zone 8 south Arkansas they are perfect. Gallardia is also perfect in the south and even bloom in December here. Do you grow squash? I need a solution to squash vine borer . Thanks for this video. Great information.

I don't know if it has occurred to you, but with the "Smart Cities" push and the increases in apartment dwelling, the growers breeding miniature varieties create an opportunity to have more color variety in considerably smaller spaces. As you mentioned :"container gardens" for instance. They are catering to the general market but also moving into the emerging markets as well. They are preparing for a shift in the way society lives. Right or wrong; it makes sense from a business perspective. Really appreciate this walk around. Thank you!

I totally get that aspect if it but even in a container you don’t want only short plants. There is still a market for things of varied heights which seems to be totally ignored by the industry whose main focus is moving plants on racks.

You may unfortunately be correct. Once upon a time and not so long ago; all this was the domain of the home gardener who saved their seeds, traded them with neighbors and worked steadily to improve the varieties they grew. The professional starter plants business has made a huge dent in that domain and I fear we are all the poorer for it!

I can’t even get lavender to last a season. It hates me. I found a PW one and was so hopeful and planted it in a concrete pot with well draining soil. It’s turning gray at the base now. We did have a week of rain but I’m not sure what it’s problem is. Maybe I’ll cut it all back. I don’t know what to do.

Anita, I live in central NC about 30 minutes north of Brie. I gave up on growing lavender in the ground about 30 years ago, and I swear it wasn't even as hot back then! Lavender have large root systems so choose a large pot and amend a good potting soil (Fox Farm Happy Frog for example) with 1/4 to1/3 perlite or grit. Go light with the PlantTone (or Osmocote) but do use some. I cover the potting soil with pea gravel and after initial watering I water very sparingly, and I mean sparingly. Rain water is okay, even if it rains for a few days. But let potted lavender have a dry-down period after long rains. Get acquainted with the heft of the pot and when it seems lightweight, then water. Full morning to midday sun, then afternoon shade is good. Please don't give up on growing potted lavender.

@@paulacothren3591 thanks for the tips. I did add perlite to the pot and I thought a concrete pot would help it dry out quicker after too much rain. Maybe it wasn’t deep enough.
