  • Volvo has has a long history of making station wagons and off road focused Cross Country wagons as well. For 2020 they are bucking the trend by bringing America more wagon variants than anyone else. But is the new V60 Cross Country the off road wagon for my demographic?

    One reason I bought my 2017 A4 allroad over the V60 Cross Country, was because of the ride. My A4 allroad came standard with true adaptive dampers, so you can tailor the ride to your comfort. When I test drove the Volvo V60 CC it was too firm a ride for me. I loved the look of the Volvo, but I wish it was a little more supple on rough pavement. I now have over 30K miles on the allroad and, so far, I haven't had any issues with it.

    • @Mr21scott
      @Mr21scott 5 лет назад +1

      IMO auto manufacturers have forgotten how, or don't care how, to make a comfortable ride anymore. Read Consumer Reports and it feels like at least 75% of the reviews say the same thing: "...but the ride can be harsh over bumps". My old Acura TL had a near-perfect balance of sporty ride and smooth suspension. Then a few years ago I bought a Honda Accord and it practically rattled the teeth out of my head, all in the name of "handling". It used to be, you could get both.

    • @bigwilliearmitage
      @bigwilliearmitage 4 года назад

      Good luck with the suspension. Hopefully Audi re-engineered that system because it was a NIGHTMARE in earlier Allroad models. German cars out of warranty are only for the brave or wealthy. Hopefully you are both.

    I’m a wagon fan and also part of that target demographic (frequent driving in snow, up and through mountains in the Sierra Nevada, but most time spent on city streets). I got the 2017 Audi Allroad and it’s perfect for me. At the time, the V60 Cross Country was not yet available and I was comparing the Audi and the V90, but the Audi won out thanks to its in-cabin tech and price. Funny enough, it’ll be time to start looking again in a few months (I lease) and I’m weighing either a 2020 Allroad, or jumping ship to Subaru and an Outback XT. While the driving experience will never quite be the same, the new Outbacks have some pretty nice standard features when specced out, while still being a great deal cheaper than the Allroad. Ultimately I’ll see what the new Allroad offers at which trim levels and prices but ya seem to get much more bang for your buck on the newer Outbacks vs. the pre-2020 ones.

    Wagon lover here. Over the years I've owned several Scandinavian versions (Saabs and Volvos) and I've loved them all. I'll admit, though, that in my experience they generally require more care and demonstrate more niggly little issues than Asian brands. No matter. Loved 'em anyway. To those unfamiliar with Volvos their models' nomenclature is confusing. My neighbor owns a V90 Cross Country which he repeatedly notes is not an XC90 but unless they're sitting next to one another, it may be difficult to distinguish them from one another. If I were to choose I'd lean toward the V60 Cross Country simply because I prefer a smaller vehicle even if it means giving up some interior space.
    Unfortunately, my wife's daily driver doubles as the family's trip vehicle and like many Americans (especially females) she finds the "command" seating position of an SUV appealing. As a result we gave up our last Saab wagon in 2012 for a KIA Sorento and re-upped with another Sorento last year. I compensate when I want to go canyon carving in the Cascade mountains with my GTI.

    • @FantomLightning
      @FantomLightning 5 лет назад +2

      Tour X can be. Depends on how much emphasis you place on ground clearance. My Saab 9-3 is higher off the ground than the Tour X, the V60XC at 8.7 is far higher and more capable. The Buick will also be far cheaper especially with incentives and generally not be as nice/well equipped.

    • @Shadseaweed
      @Shadseaweed 5 лет назад +2

      @@FantomLightning I own one I think it's very luxurious. Having more ground clearance is only helpful in off road conditions. Buick is more car like than Subaru's outback. But has the same hp at 250 with turbo as the Volvo. I think they are direct competitors to each other

    • @FantomLightning
      @FantomLightning 5 лет назад +3

      @@Shadseaweed I wouldn't disagree that they are nice. But again, the Volvo is going to cost more and be more premium as a result. Nice review, nice scenery. A vehicle that is designed and capable of off-road travel on gravel, dirt, lumpy, snowy conditions should not use low profile tires.Volvo has engineered an excellent vehicle and then seriously degrades its purpose by using the wrong wheels and tires. We have been in this silly "Big Wheels" phase too long. Once again style over function. I expect many buyers of the V60 CC will never drive it on bad roads, so I guess they will be happy with the wheels and tires. They might just as well get the regular V60. Good to see that Volvo continues to offer wagons. Wonder if the folks that can easily afford a Volvo will just follow the crowd and get the luxury SUV or CUV. It takes some courage and individualism to choose a wagon over the larger vehicles.

    We're coming from an Outback and looking to step up to something nicer inside. Between the V60 and XC60 currently, basically the same price. Like the styling of the V (low roof line), but the better practically of the XC is hard to deny (plus it has some options you can't get on the V60 for whatever reason, like the T6/T8). Going up to the V90 is a bit much, extra $250/month here in Canada. Will probably end up with the XC60.

    Speed isn't the biggest issue with the Sensus infotainment system -- it's the poor maps and the fact that too many important features are taken out of knobs. Even Volvo management has stated publicly that they know they can't do as good a job as Google can, and they are thus replacing Sensus OS with a new Google OS (and Google Maps default, which is way better) in 2020 (presumably for 2021 models, but I think Polestar 2 gets it also at the end of 2019). Car makers really need to go back to knobs for climate and audio. Volvo's current dashboard screen is poor also, and doesn't even offer the engine temperature. And the silly roller dial for drive modes should be put on the steering wheel. Too many practical faults here, but not faults that can't be changed.
