Algonquin Park BUG Season Solo Canoe Trip

- Surviving the bugs at their peak in Algonquin Park can be tough. On this solo canoe trip its just me and the bugs in the backcountry of Algonquin. Over the years I've built the mental strength to endure the swarms of mosquitoes and black flies. I've also learned many different tricks to make them more bearable.
Here's some of my favourite suggestions:
Bug Jackets! Not just head nets. Wear a ball cap underneath and make sure they cinch around the wrists and waist to keep black flies from crawling under
Shower with NO soap or tea tree oil soap before going out to get rid of any soapy scent that attracts bugs
Wear light coloured, loose, baggy clothing to keep fabric away from skin
Get non-scented deodorant or just go with out
I hope this might help some of you enjoy the outdoors a little more this time of year! There are so many benefits to exploring the backcountry during bug season!

I really am glad I got to experience canoeing the lakes here for a whole week camping out and portaging when I was 15. Thank you Mr. Hill for planning a unforgettable trip and leading us the entire way in your 70's! Rest in Peace Mr. Hill you will never be forgotten and always missed
Good canoeing memories!
Good job , the bugs were relentless wow. You did well solo camping in the back country.
The bugs can be pretty brutal in earlier June in Algonquin. Bug jackets are a must have item that time of year. The first day of a trip in bug season is the hardest as your mind adjusts to the never ending sound of buzzing and the realization that you're going to get bit alot and there's nothing you can do about it. Thanks for checking out the video!
Appreciate your videos - and the fact you do double launches/ landings to get the arrival/departure shots. It adds a lot to the story. I found myself swatting non-existent bugs just watching this and hearing the constant hum of bugs! Nice job!
If you're canoe tripping in June the constant hum of bugs is the norm. I'm glad the video portrays that. Filming a video while on trip does add alot of extra work but I don't mind it. Thanks for watching!
I got the Heebie-jeebies from watching this bug video. Growing up in the Green and Adirondack mountains, I have distinct traumatic memories of swarms of mosquitoes and black flies but nothing quite that bad - shudders - lol
😆 This was during peak bug season and yes they can be awful lol. I spent a summer years ago tree planting way up in Northern Ontario . Those were possibly some of the worst bug I've experienced. Now that I've been living just outside of Algonquin for a few years now, I feel like I am getting more used to them. It's a mental game most of the time. Thanks for watching!
Very good video. Like the simplicity without drama. You travel light, i like that a lot. No need for a bunch a heavy gear. Looking forward to more videos
I always like single carrying portages, it allows me to travel farther. Happy to hear you liked the video, thanks for watching!
I couldn’t imagine. I have the opportunity to go mid June this year ( I always go in September), and this video is the reason I may stay home.
It's the toughest time of year to do a trip in my opinion, but if you're prepared for it can be worth it. Lots of wildlife sightings during bug season!
Lotsa Fun to be had in Algonquin. Thank you for posting.
Always! It's such a big park with so many areas to explore. Thanks for watching!
Looks like an epic adventure! Funny, I am listening through headphones, and the mosquitoes sound like they are right here in the room with me!! I think I would just eat in my tent maybe?? Anyway, great video
Hahah it was a buggy trip that's for sure. Eating in your tent seems like a good idea until you wake up in the middle of the night with a bear sniffing your tent. Some suffering is good for you and builds mental toughness. Thanks for watching!
Splendid. You're likely to gain more and more viewers of your adventures.
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
Beautiful weather,l and another great trip in the books! Thanks for sharing!
I don't think I've ever been on a bad canoe trip. Some are more challenging but I love them all. Thanks for watching!
Nice trip. Bug jackets FTW!
You know it! Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great outing 👌
It was a great trip. I enjoy being alone in the wilderness even when the bugs are bad. Thanks for watching!
Nice video Alec, great scenery. A real mix of lake, wetland and small river tripping. The bug jacket looks pretty manageable, and you don't have to worry about the skin effects of deet. I always wondered about pouring deet repellent on for days at a time. That jacket seems like a good compromise. Keep tripping and filming!
The bigger lakes that are more open are definitely a little nicer to travel during bug season. Small rivers are always swarming with biting bugs. The bug jacket is a life saver!! Did you know you can even buy bug pants?! I always try to avoid using bug detergent as much as possible. It's really bad for us and the environment! When I get desperate enough I will use the bug lotion, I find it works best and it all ends up on you and not on everything else. Thanks for watching! I will have new content soon!
Well done! They certainly looked bad
Thanks, my blood donation to the forest!
Man, you need a bug shelter! 😄🦟 I trip in bug season too, and I never leave home without it.
I bought the Eureka No Bug Zone 2 years ago! Still haven't used it but my partner has haha! She says it's great. When I'm going solo I try to pack the bare minimum so I've learned to suffer through the bugs. My tent is a welcome retreat by the end of the day. Thanks for watching!
Awesome trip just subscribed! Love the way you do your videos!
Thanks for the sub, I just subscribed to your channel too. I see you enjoy tripping in Algonquin. Thanks for watching!
I thought "how did he get from McIntosh to Shah Lake?". I've been on Shah Lake (in the northwest corner of Algonquin), then checked Jeff's Map and saw the "other" Shah Lake. Got it! And the campsite view looked identical. I've done the same route except the connection to Tim River and La Muir. It's a beautiful route. Sure busy in Summer ! Wonderful film.
Oh I didn't know there are two Shah Lakes. I haven't explored the North West corner of Algonquin yet, Paige has though, and she says its really nice. Tons of great routes in the park. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching
@@AleconAdventures That part of the Park is very quiet, as the portages are just long enough to bother most people, but not long enough to actually be an obstacle. They seem to finish just in time as you saying, "Enough of that for now."
@@AleconAdventures I think he meant Shad Lake.
Sometimes theses buggy trips are more fun to remember than experience...
The most challenging canoe trips do seem to be some of the most memorable ones. There is always that moment on a buggy trip when I take a moment to calm my mind and acknowledge that I'm giving my blood donation to the forest. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks for putting it on RUclips.
Curious about you tent. What brand is it?
Glad you enjoyed the video. The tent I used is the OneTigris Mirage Screen Tent. MSR also makes a similar product however it's four times the price. I've used it for two seasons now and it seems to be holding up fairly well. Thanks for watching!
@@AleconAdventures Thanks
What kind of awesome and seemingly very light canoe are you paddling?!?
It was a Trailhead Kevlar Prospector and yes it is very light. Thanks for watching!
I know sometimes it looks like someone’s put pepper in for oatmeal.😂🇨🇦
I usually put a pinch of salt but definitely not pepper! 😄
Isn’t it funny when the bugs are biting so are the fish.🇨🇦👍
Yep they usually go hand in hand!
On the topic of black flies/mosquitoes and deterrence Alec, are you familiar with the thermacell mosquito repellent device, charged by butane? My neighbor had us over in their back yard and the mosquitoes were really on us. He said he uses this device in the woods camping and brought it out to show us. Once he turned it on and it had a chance to dispense the emission the mosquitoes disappeared. I wondered if you could use in at you campsite rather than relying on a smokey fire while eating.
Hey! Yes I am familiar with the Thermacell devices. I have also heard good things but have yet to try it myself. Maybe I will consider it for next bug season! Blinding smoke isn't exactly an ideal remedy...Thanks again for watching :)
Nice video! Just curious, how are the bugs in late June?
June is a bad bug month. If it gets very hot quickly the situation might improve by the end of the month but the bugs will still be around. Thanks for watching Ben!
Terrible time for hiking and backpacking though!
The bugs suck that time of the year but the fishing and wildlife make up for it. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Did you do do the 2590m portage from La Muir to Big Trout?!
Hey! Sorry Alec has not replied to your comments. He's been out on a 10 day canoe trip and will get back to you when he returns. -Paige
Back from my trip. Yes I did that long portage from La Muir to Big Trout. The bugs kept me moving. Thanks for watching!
When do you find the bugs stick around until? Thinking if going in July, I know the deer and horse flies are out then in the city but I find those more manageable than thick mosquitoes. Or do they stay this way until September?
Generally the bugs start easing off in July and by August you're good. It varies year to year. If you really want to be safe wait until mid August. This year doesn't seem to be a bad bug year in my opinion.
“Easing off”?! Seriously? Indeed, mosquitoes are the worst in July!
What kind of bug tent is that?
It's the OneTigris Mirage Screen Tent. It's a 2 person tent that is held up by a ridgeline and you can use a tarp as a fly to cover it. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful 😍 Loved the video. Well done. 💪 Awesome song selection too. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed to follow your adventures #193. We make adventure videos too, I hope our channels grow together. 👍
Thanks for the sub! I've subscribed to your channel as well. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
Have you ever flipped over in a canoe??
Oh yeah, paddling whitewater and a few times paddling windy lakes with clients. Thanks for watching!
