  • Here is a Monogram 1970 Challenger TA that I have fond memories of building. I built one of these when they first came out in the 80's. I played with that one and took it apart a few times. I still have what is left of that one. It was built into the Green 70 Hemi Challenger RT That I featured previously. This one was built from a reissue from the early 2000's under the Revell label. I did this one back about 2003-2004.

Hi, I’m 70 and I owned a 70 TA, bought it used in 75 from a poor sailor who lost his licence for DUI and he had three more DUI’s and racing charges before the courts. :(
It was pretty low mileage and very rare here in Nova Scotia. There was no sound deadening / insulation because they were built for racing, not a problem, they had faster steering boxes, mine was unassisted steering but did have power disc brakes. A very fast car, special high nickel standard mould 340 block with unique heads with larger rectangular ports and exhaust manifolds, because of this the valve pushrods were squished closer together and used cast steel rockers with offsets to align with the valves. They did use hydraulic lifters. The six-pack was a dream, Center 2 barrel did scavenge fuel from the other two, so no so hot mileage but no bog when you hammered it.
I never took it to a track but in the seventies all the muscle was on the streets, mine was a dark reddish brown and it blended in so no tickets. Looked like it was doing a hundred standing still.
Even though I couldn’t get in without four friends piling in, it didn’t lose.
It was rated at 290hp but so was the Boss 302 and Z 28 302.
The down side of the hp was the head gaskets, standard mould 340 with a lot of extra power.
There are very few survivors because that block was every molar small block drag racers dream.
I stopped driving it because I knew I was going to kill a bunch of my friends ( there were a lot of drunks on the road back then) and switched to motorcycle racing on a track, but I wouldn’t have missed it anything !
Oh, they were $4,428 new and the adds read you can have Sam Posey’s for $44,000 of this one for $4,400 and I think I paid $3,000. Nice job on the model :) Dan

Yes it was a unique time, all the new muscle died in 71. I mainly described the unique additions that made the extra power, I neglected to mention that with the addition of radial BFG TA’s, it was a very stable car at any speed. Since you seem to be modelling so accurately I have a tip for ppl building the kit, the intake manifold was unfinished aluminum. Dan :)

Ralph, That's a nice build!...Reminds me of the car I used to get my driver's license. It wasn't fancy, had only a 318. but a nice car just the same. Thanks for the share. Aloha, Wayne

Regarding decaling a black T/A build: I think you're overthinking it! The semi-gloss finish of the 1:1 decals is replicated by their scale counterparts. Applying them as is with no additional coating to a shiny gloss black body would provide the contrast in finish you are going for. Just a thought.

I had a 72 that was without better description (bright blue) with white side stripes. It was an oddball 340, 3 sp, on the floor, 360 heads, bench seat, single thermoquad

Not really. Sales brochure shows B5 blue as bright blue poly for Dodge, True Blue for Plymouth. B3 is Super Blue which is Petty Blue (Plymouth)

Just a point, the standard 340 Hp motor did NOT carry the same advertised horsepower rating as the 340 six pack. 340 was 275 HP, 340 six pack carried 290 HP.

I have not had much luck with wax myself. Didn’t really see a difference. And when I applied to much of filled up the jams and dried white.

Hi! (uh oh!) I'm back. I will never click on a video with anything other than Mopar because RUclipss algorithm will try to ram 100 million videos down my throat of other brands and I'm not having it. A very pretty car, for sure. I love the under hood decals. They look great and real, too. From what I've read, the antenna was relocated to the rear because the fiberglass hood caused radio interference. How is fiberglass going to cause that, as opposed to a metal hood, I'm dying to know. I guess I'm a nut, because I was hoping to see green over spray on the under carriage. Ok, over restored. Not a fan of over restored, as you prolly already know from all of my previous tirades, lol. Speaking of previous tirades, I'm still not liking the tires. They are completely wrong on the original, but this is an over restored modified version. I'm also going to disagree a bit about the horsepower numbers. IMHO, there is no way the six pak added that much hp. A huge tunnel ram with 2 large 4 barrels only adds about maybe, 50 hp. So, I can only imagine a 10-25 hp increase.
Yes, I have more of my stupid stories to go with that. Back in my day, I bought a 6 pack manifold and carbs and put it on my 340 Challenger replacing the stock cast iron and Thermoquad. Here in Corpus, they roll up the streets after dark. So, I waited until 3am and took this thing out for a test. No air cleaner. No aftermarket stuff like that available back then. None in a junk yard either. I got on a decent 5 laned street with no one visible for miles. It was running pretty dam good. Of course I had to test it, so I punched it hard. It ran up to 120 surprisingly quick. Ok, I got a little scared. I let off of the gas pedal, but it stuck wide open! I'm stomping on it, trying to knock it loose. Nope, still going faster. I panicked! I hit the brakes like a dummy. I spun like 2 complete 360s and ended up going about 60 going in the same direction as I had been. I sneaked home, changed my underware and pulled that 6 pack off the next day, returning it back to stock(well, except for the headers). So, that Nitro circus stunt and no air cleaner here on the coast was the 24 hours of 6 pack for meeeee! I already told you about the real T/A my best buddy wrapped around a telephone pole. I'm not sure how people as stupid as we were, lived to be senior citizens.

The factory ratings is correct. The speculation is the 350hp but remember the AAR and TA had a very special 340. It was not the same 340 with just a 6pack put on it. Special Heads, Special Block, different cam from the factory.
