  • Brass Monkey Fridge Freezer Review | A NOT SO FAVOURABLE OPINION
It was a hot summers day when it dawned on me that I required something to keep my drinks Icey cold, after some internet research it was the Brass Monkey Fridge Freezer that seemed to have all the supporters. Off to #jaycar I went to find a #brassmonkey fridge and away i went. Needless to say this fridge has not been my best friend and has really been rather disappointing as seen in this fridge freezer review and unfortunately in hand has drawn a not so favourable opinion.

I have the insulated cover for my 75Liter and that helps it in the sun, also stops the lid warping.
I would say that for a cheap fridge they perform well, but it needs to be kept out of direct sun as much as possible and load it with pre-cooled stuff to give it an easier life.
I have done these things with mine and it has served me well for 2 years, no complaints.

I’ve got a 15 litre which sits in the tray with a cover, never had an issue with it. Runs perfectly and cools down quickly. 2 or more years old. For 199 dollars I have no problems.

I had the same fridge, never had a problem in 2 years, didn't warp, yes, I always turn it on 2-4 hours prior use, but I did leave it running for nearly a week and the batteries didn't go flat, like anything, you pay for what you get, but I love this fridge so much I bought another one.

About to bin my 75l. Had it 6 months and it’s a dud. 240v adapter burnt out and the fridge cannot maintain a temp for more then 24hrs. Expensive experiment and I’m embarrassed. Went into BCF today to check out their range and saw my exact model on a trolley in store, someone else got 16 months out of theirs and walked out with an Engel and left his burnt out unit in store. I don’t see longevity or return customers with this brand. I’m genuinely happy for people who are reporting good things, just hasn’t been everyone’s experience.

I brought the 100 ltr stainless version dual zone which runs an LG compressor same as the Oz trail fridge
I’ve had it 2 years now it’s done 2 trips to cape York on the back of the Ute from Brisbane and the only issue it has had was when it was under the Tonneau cover in 40 degree heat the temps became a bit unstable, freezer side came up about 4 degrees so -18 up to -14 but just riding around on the tray it is fine
It has never been turned off since the day I got it
It’s either running off 240 volt in the shed or hooked up to batteries and solar
The way I see it is if it lasts 5 years and I paid $600 on special it’s money well spent
Plus Engel didn’t at the time sell a dual zone with a spilt lid and Waeco didn’t have a proper fridge type seal on the lid
See how long it lasts I guess the other option was national lunar and it was $2700

Good review & I have to agree with your comments. Ive heard a lot of good report about Brass Monkey fridges before I bought 4 different variants of them (yeah, I’m a bad fridge bitch too), 2 of which I had to return for exchange or upgrades due to faults, the 21 ltr model kept losing its clear plastic control plates, so after 2 fridges in under 12 months I swapped out for a 30 ltr model which has been ok. The 18 ltr model with battery crapped out in a week, so got that one exchanged for another that seem to work ok so far. The upright 65 ltr in my canopy seems to struggle with maintaining a low temp in the fridge section, so I may need to look at modding that. TFS. Cheers

Had the 50ltr for two years now and am up in Darwin. It is 31c degrees outside. The fridge is in the back of the Jeep plugged in to 240v and showing 2c for the fridge and -11c for the freezer. What is the problem? Has worked perfectly since day 1.

Looks like there is no problem with your one, as mentioned in the review, this was an opinion formed on my unit not anyone else’s. Thanks for the reply mate, love the feedback 👍

My Lid has also warped and it has never been in direct sun. I had it in the Boot of a Sedan and it has also now warped so just heat in any form and it will warp.

I got the 15l same as yours and have never had a issue with it I love it and would buy again use it in my truck 6 days a week for 6 months now and has not missed a beat only minor issue is if I am being picky is it is a bit load but even that does not bother me for $199 I say can't go wrong and has been better than I thought it would be for the price. 🇦🇺

I've got the 22lt, the lid on mine is solid plastic so no issies with warping ,they aren't meant to be a fridge exposed to the elements, the manual says to avoid exposue to direct sunlight, if you thought about putting a fridge in the back of a ute or similar, why would you buy a cheap fridge? .

    • @On-PointAdventures
      @On-PointAdventures  Год назад +2

For many reasons, they are still designed as a portable outdoor fridge, so to say avoid exposure to direct sunlight for an outdoor orientated fridge is a tad perplexing, some people may be happy to keep it for indoor use only and for this it would probably be perfect

Hi I have to strongly disagree with your comments. I have one of these fridges which I bought in 2021 and have used mainly for freezing meat etc and has worked perfectly up north WA in very hot temperatures, I can only assume the model you have is not the same quality.
I have not experienced any of the issues you comment on , I'm not saying what you have experienced but I can honestly say I have not had any issues what so ever.
I would definitely recommend this product.
    Cheers Swany

Hey mate, Thankyou for your comment, I knew when filming this video that it could come across somewhat controversial, I know plenty of mates who have and absolutely love these fridges, whilst I have had a bad experience with this particular model it is all I had to base my review of. Really stoked to have your comment mate and hope you have subscribed and joining us on future vids and journeys

I have to agree with you not the fridge for your use, but I don't know what is, my Waeco wouldn't perform under those conditions. I got the 25lt metal look got it on a super special for well under $200 with 240v lead, so I didn't have to lug the big 65tr around for overnight trips. Yes it is slow to cool down but mine has not missed a beat in over 2 years. Quite often use it at home because zero degrees is perfect beer temp. It does struggle on days over 38 degrees. But can't fault it as value for money

It’s certainly a tough one, believe it or not tho, my xtm fridge with transit cover seems to be fine and so far (3years) doesn’t ever let me down. Go figure aye. I thought out of all the xtm would have let me down but on all accounts I believe it to be a rebadged waeco

@brenzfishing yeah they have that familiar shape. It's horse's for courses I will always think the Engel is the toughest, like my brother in law says how many 20 year old fridges do you see that aren't Engel.

I have one of these same model I put a 600mm frozen bottle of water in mine got down to temp quick has not missed a beat in 12 months also no plastic fridge or esky will cope well in full hot sun .
I also own a Weaco 45 ltr and in full sun at 35 to 38 deg it did not cope well with the heat so I insulated it with a cover and its fine.

There is a new version with bluetooth and option for battery and it's on sale for $150 right now , bloody bargain?? Good for my little hatchback car to run in freezer mode and keep some ice bricks. Will be used for frozen stuff from the shops, and keep drinks in a esky with ice bricks.

I have one for 2.5 years now and as for the compressor it's so far good but yep like you say lid warping is definitely 2/10 I went through 2nd expansion lid by now thinking it's more sturdy but that one warped too and done a lot of hacks with it like spending another $40 for that 2nd lid, $20 Bunnings insulating foam spray for under the lid and under warped outside plastic and another $15 for long belt that I have around fridge and lid to keep it tight otherwise with all that lid warping there is no other way to keep it shut 100% I would say that without my extra hacks and innovation that fridge would be pretty much useless to me but now it's at least able to function ok. I also tried freezing water without extra foam insulation and it wasn't able to hold the coldness and do so but after foam insulation it does look a bit like bulging coral rock it did freeze 2L plastic bottle of water partially and it took 18h working non stop. Another thing to mention is that it can only cool 35C below ambient temperature so if my inside vehicle temperature is 25C then the fridge can never go colder than -10C and I have tested this both in summer and winter with ambient temperatures.

Chill your drinks down before loading them into your fridge. Cover the fridge with a insulated cover . LED readouts do not like direct sunlight.
