A reminder that GSN has always skipped episodes 311-313. They are no where to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!

OK, thanks for the update. I thought my computer went funny!
Gene was already on NBC as the co-host of “The Home and Garden Show “. Steve Allen had 2 stints on CBS, one on late night radio and as a panelist on “What’s My Line?” NBC hired him away.
As soon as I saw "Charley" I said "flight attendant". I mean, with those dimples, and that "costume" she was wearing, what else? ( the choice was movie star, or flight attendant.) She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Fly me..."
Slow week again with Richard wining again giving away 6,500 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 11 matches for the regulars.. Penny won for the semi regulars with 7 matches. Bret gave away 250 dollars in audience match match..
One forgets that a few of the first contestants the show ever had (in Match Game 73) also had women with manly names, like Stanley. There must have been plenty of incidents back before sonograms were invented where the parents had their hearts set on a boy's name and just couldn't change it.
I knew a man named Su…. I guess when he was a kid he tracked down his father and got in to a big fight over it… in the mud, blood, and beer… the father was said to have kicked like a mule and bit like a crocodile 🤷♂️ 😂
I wonder when Cover Girl cosmetics became a household name. Google?? Says born in 1961, so surprised wasn't up there, but I guess still not real popular yet. I don't use it, but I'm sure many women/girls do.
I guess we can hold Match Game pretty much responsible for the "burnt-orange shag rug" '70s trope of the American experience. That triangle isn't avocado green is it? Nah.
I wanted a 70s conversion van with orange shag carpet floor to ceiling, captains chairs, 8 track tape player and CB radio. Like Shaggy and Scubby only cooler!
I had mixed feelings about Penny being on Match Game. But I thoroughly enjoyed her appearances. I'm assuming this was her only week ever on the show. Because in just a short couple of years she would be on one of the biggest sitcoms ever for the late 70s and into the '80s. "I'M SO EXCITED"!!!! LOL.
There have been quite a few single-week guest panelists that I think didn't mesh well with the show's overall vibe. Penny however would've been a great addition to the roster of semi-regulars. She brought some understated humor and was a decent player. At least we got to "meet" her this week!
It would've really helped if she had watched the show before coming on. It would be tough to come onto the show cold. There are many recurring answers asked in different questions. With answers like boobs, innocence, bras, buns, wife etc that Penny wouldn't know.
@@patcrites5274Sometimes the contestants becomes a big part of the show. Remember Dorothy Zinney (sp?) Or the poor lady that looked like she was going to have a mental a mental breakdown (Edie or Evie maybe?) or Ron V who really clicked with Fannie and won quite a bit a money? It doesn't happen all the time but some times the contestants really shine.

The show was pretty cheap. The toaster with the contestants questions never worked, Gene went through a dozen microphones, poor Earl was locked in the box to slide the audience match answers and three guys pushed the set to spin the contestants on and off. That's thrifty.
I always thought that Brett Somers was incredibly funny. Super smart..knew just when to stop.. and the perfect foil for Charles. (Who was also insanely talented)
At the supematch, Gene said, "Once in a while you draw a blank." I can't believe he said that. HOW MANY TIMES has saint Richard lost at that supetmatch? (still can't feel bad for the contestant though when they lose with him. They're the ones who keep picking him)

Truly a shame
The horror...
I hate it when that happens. I've tried to find all the episodes to ABC's American Sportsman. Probably gone forever.
On this date in 1953, The Tonight Show with Steve Allen and sidekick/announcer Gene Rayburn aired it's first episode..
I wonder how they got paired up? I know Gene was on the #1 rated drive time radio show in NYC.
Gene was already on NBC as the co-host of “The Home and Garden Show “. Steve Allen had 2 stints on CBS, one on late night radio and as a panelist on “What’s My Line?” NBC hired him away.
Puck? Puck? What the F? Everyone knows the Match Game rule! Whenever someone “loses” something, it’s ALWAYS their virtue or innocence.
Betty is and Charles was awesome people!
Charles and Betty are the best!
With or without the mustaches!
If I was Carrie's age then, I would have had such a crush on her. Smart, great smile, beautiful eyes...Wow.
On a later show pasties and tassels were not a match. In Charles's voice I say, "Consistency Please!"
Charles looks great with the stash
By 15:52 minutes in, it was gone.
Charles looks great in a Snidley Whiplash kinda way.
5:00 -- Wanna bet he was thinking "Call"? The tell with Richard is always when his hand goes over his face -- he's a little embarrassed.
I wonder how long it took for Betty and Charles to lose their marker mustaches? Haha!
Maybe Betty used mascara.
Uh, the next question 🤷🏻♂️

Another funny episode. LOVE IT

john -- i knew she was a stewardess immediately like you did. The scarf gave it away and for the time, it was exactly what they wore.
I like her but I adore Betty. She’s funny & smart & beautiful
Ikr. She looked like a flight attendant
There are a lot of good answers for sauce. Tomato, apple, I thought of Tartar sauce, Duck sauce, steak sauce, etc.
Yea. That was a hard one.
All that really came to mind for me was "Hot sauce". But when I heard contestant's applesauce, I thought it was a much better answer!
My first thought, Spaghetti sauce. I didn't think of anything else.
I'm glad Penny finally perked up. 😔😀

Oh, and I believe this was the first full week where the SAME panelist was picked for ALL of the head-to-head matches for the week.
Kerri looks SO A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E!!
At least I got to see Kerry end her run before the episodes that get skipped.
Panelists:
1. Orson Bean
2. Brett Somers
3. Charles Nelson Reilly
4. Penny Marshall
5. Richard Dawson
6. Betty White

There used to be so many Cover Girl commercials. I thought it was a good answer too.
I almost choked I laughed so hard when Brett imitated Penny and said, "I`m so excited.....tassels".
Wasn't Penny excited when she said that LOL

Kerry and Charlie, two very pretty contestants.
Love how it's all about the celebrities schtick and the contestants are basically background scenery...
You not watch any of the shows because the contestants are part of the show

Penny was so beautiful.

Betty's answer to the Hyena question could've been better.
It’s obvious that Match Game responses could be anything not necessarily right all the time . Nothing wrong with “sleeping”. JMHO

Does Carrie have chickens on her shirt?
👍
Richard got picked alot and Brett would hiss..but when it came time for her being picked what you would hear is I'm nervous and good gravy Marie.
It's true. And you never heard Richard once say variations of "oh God, not me" when he's called on.
She was never happy. She just liked to complain about Richard. Pathetic

She was very funny with her ad-libs, but she wasn't very good at playing Match Game. So many of her answers were incredibly stupid, LOL.
