What's the "humane" way to do it? I can see closing the border and eliminating asylum agreements while we get a handle on it. Give illegal immigrants a year to self-deport, then begin the process. Make it impossible after a year for them to hold a job (fine/prison for employers of illegal immigrations), receive benefits or services of any kind, etc. Its harsh but this has become completely untenable .
This was a fair and balanced interview. I wasn’t aware of his background. Questions about his opinions on the political climate and assumptions about policy were totally within bounds
Good interview. Seems like he is focused on enforcing the law. Feckless politicians who allowed this is unbelievable. I am afraid that we FAFO'd with this issue.😖
Trump and Homan explicitly ran on deporting TPS and DACA recipients and US born citizen children of undocumented immigrants, and the overwhelming majority of the public is against all of those specific actions. People just like how massdeportations sound but they're not getting what they proopsed done because its insane
Stop injecting words into the conversation that are meant to frame the conversation in emotion terms instead of logic terms. Open boarder is controversial. Mass deportation is not. That is logic. If illegal immigrants can come to our country just because of their local hardship, then I would like to set up a camp in your living room and be able to pay my grocery with your credit card. Please don't ever lock your front door, otherwise you are just discriminatory. If have a lock or ever lock your doors, then you are in no position to support open boarder.

I’m Latina, as well, & the vast majority of us are pro LEGAL immigration but not these impoverished illegals criminals who are harming our communities. Yet the media didn’t report on that, & later blamed Trump who actually deported far less (only 1mil). Trump achieved low illegal migrants/ trafficking by securing the border & “tough talk” like telling traffickers & criminals “don’t come!”

I can understand him chosen as the border czar. His experience under various presidents is undeniable but choosing Matt gaetz to a top cabinet position as attorney General? And it seems other people not qualified for top cabinet positions are getting the job. It is bound to get hectic and chaotic.
Gaetz probably won't get confirmed by the Senate. And the rest of the picks are all fine. We need outsiders to fix the mess created by the established(Democrats).
I think 95% of the country agrees with what this guy said. He was promoted under Obama & is basically Obama’s ICE guy, so he’s thrived under both political parties
@@scarletsletter4466 Yet he's only saying EXACTLY what Trump/MAGA has been saying all along. This country needs to heal!
I hate Trump for too many reasons for this to make much of a difference. But I cannot hate this man based on anything he's saying in this interview. Reasonable, sounds like he will do a good and fair job.
The same media who told you Homan is controversial and decried his association with Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation, insinuating that he is therefore dangerous ALSO told you every reason you should hate Trump. The propaganda is ubiquitous and powerful - but it's not accurate.
They’ll start with 1.5 million who have already lost their cases, and those who are already in our justice system, and large companies caught employing slave labor. After that it gets much more complicated and politically unviable. But at least with that, and stronger border control, and offering deals to self deport in return for being allowed to reapply at a later date without this current crossing being held against them, will all help.
Out of curiosity…his construction bid story…why not go after the business that hires illegal workers? Why not go after all of the businesses that commit a number of crimes by using illegal labor?
I agree with a number of the things he's saying. By his own analogy of getting his roof replaced, this policy will absolutely be inflationary. Just be prepared for it. Getting a roof replaced goes from $15k to $20K, buying a basket of Strawberries goes from $5 to $7. If you don't get that, you're not being serious. Just be prepared for it.
Which tells you that illegal immigration has driven down American working class wages. People always try to say, "they do the work that Americans won't. Bull. Americans won't do it for THOSE wages, but i always just ask, " Do you not think that roofs were put on houses before mass illegal immigration? Were strawberries not picked?" Of course they were, but they were done with higher wages and yes, higher prices. But the working class has a chance at dignity then.
Herdon gave us a few tells at the end that I think betray his disatisfaction with this interview. "...their existence in the country is itself a crime, at least in the view of this incoming administration". The choice of the word "existence" instead of the more correct "presence" is a framing device. The statement also implies that the "incoming administration"s position that crossing the border illegally is in fact a crime is somehow up for debate. As a parting shot, Herdon invokes Gaetz as "like Homan" and includes a completely irrelevant clip of Gaetz spewing unconstututional political vitriol. Ive listened to a lot of Herdon's pieces, I like him, but he really seems to try and frame his interviewees into boxes. He may not realize it, I dont know. The party has blown it on this particular issue. We talk a lot about the rule of law. The unstated position of most of the party is we should simply not enforce a law we dont approve of. Who does that sound like? What would be the more intellectually consistent way to frame this dilema? Now THAT would make a good article.
I dislike Trump absolutely. However, I agree with Tom Homan. Immigrants are welcome, but need to enter the country LEGALLY and meet the criteria for legal status. Border security is a must for every country.
First, fire Ezra Klein and give his job to Astead. Second, no offense to Astead, but this interview with Homan is pointless. This entire conversation is Astead trying to ask questions and Homan saying, "I'm just following orders - executing border policy is horrific". Thanks, Homan, you sound like a thoughtful, introspective person /s
I want this guy to stop fentanyl across the border because I'm sick of the loser homeless people roaming around our cities and sleeping in tax payer parks that belong to children.
This guy is very earthy. I can't disagree with his views, And I think Trump is a complete clown. But, immigration is not a black and white issue. Sure, you get caught at the border, or you're anniklegal in jail for committing violent crimes, yes, deport immediately. But what about people who have been here 10, 20 years, have created American families, have been paying taxes, which they're not going to see back, etc?
To all that say this guy is racist or xenophobic. Come to south east Asia and enter either Singapore or Malaysia illegally and see what happen. Better yet. Bring some weed. Just to be funny..

You brough this on yourself +your poor kids. .life dont work the way you think nothing is free NO MORE. We need our money for our own .
Both sides of aisle have valid points, they just put emphasis on different perspectives. If you're a conservative, workers coming in from outside the country and working illegally is an obvious threat to economic prosperity for average citizens. If you're a liberal, looking out for the rights of the oppressed individual is paramount. When either side discounts the validity of the other's argument we have the situation we're in. I am not discounting that ignorance of border issues on the left, or racism on the right, which I believe has piggybacked on this issue.
Deporting millions of people who have been stably working essential jobs for decades and pay taxes through an ITIN will be catastrophic to the economy and average citizen’s prosperity. As has been forewarned by economists
Thanks for your show, but I feel like the run up reporter never seems to have any facts or figures to deepen the discussion, do you guys actually do any deep homework before your interviews? Yah also a Harris supporter and agree with much of Homan says, the one thing I didn't agree with him is his position that family separations were deterring immigrants. Of course the Run up reporter had no facts or data to counter Homan's statement on that? Really y'all need to do a little work before your interviews?
I disagree ideologically that illegal immigrants are immoral or fundamentally wrong for being here, that’s just laws, and laws aren’t always meant to be correct.
Thats because you think with your feelings, not your brain. We cannot begin to functionally absorb the countless millions who have poured across our borders. Nor should we have to because of your feelings. You need to take half a dozen into your home before expecting me to pay for it. Not to mention the insane threat to national security this poses - don't know about the thousands of Chinese and Arab men who have crossed? Hmmm, why could that be? Nor the human trafficking, endless rapes, fentanyl that kills 100,000+ Americans every year? You don't have the moral high ground here.
Such a crude justification: "I've saved a lotta lives". But how many have died due to the policies? It's washing your hands without solving the problem.
I think the question is does he agree with changing the laws so that more people can legally immigrate to the US instead of trying to go through illegal channels out of desperation? This would also presumably save lives. And yes if you are willing to risk death or rape as he described then you are desperate.
Every time a parent in America breaks a law and is imprisoned guess what happens to their children? This is no different and I don't see how anyone rational person can fail to understand. You can thank your party for creating this mess, period.
@WhizzingFish12 I am not in the least surprised that you utterly fail to understand the difference in these two situations. Someone who is incarcerated in America still has connection with and the ability to see and communicate with their family members. They also have the chance to reunite with them after they get out. Many of those poor families that this evil man separated will never see each other again. He is a man with no soul, as are many of the commenters on this thread.
You do know that in many cases testing shows that the "parents" aren't related to the kids and are actually human traffickers, dont you? Again, I'll ask you do kids create a "get out of jail free card" for illegal immigrants? What's your solution? And "I don't know" isn't an answer.
@WhizzingFish12 The trump administration had an official stated policy of family separation with no plan for reunification. Their twisted thinking in adopting such an evil policy was that it would deter future migrants from entering the country. All of this was said out loud. Go ahead and recede back into the comfort of your heartless denialism.
Holman is a gruff guy but I think he genuinely cares. What makes me angry is that Donald Trump held up a border bill, a really good border bill because he wanted to run on it how many people have died because of that? And I can’t stand Trump
Vance explained that bill on his episode of the JRE. Basically there was a lot of things shoved into the bill that would have been horrible for the securing of the border. The bill did add more financing for border patrol but it was a minor part of the bill and not worth everything else that would have been implemented.
It was a terrible bill that would have allowed nearly 2,000,000 people a year to cross before it was shut down. It added a ton of agents but they werent for stopping them but processing them faster. Go read it.
@@userre85 No, Trump won because a large swath of Americans consume a constant stream of lies from their favorite content creators, and they're proud of it.
If you get arrested with your child you will be separated for a few hours. Many of the kids this guy separated never saw their parents again. This guy is a sadistic knuckle dragger of the worst sort.
Horse crap. If you are convicted of a crime you are separated for quite possibly years. The kids are truly a tragedy - they truly are - but they are being used as pawns by those who try to cross with them in order to avoid deportation. So kids become the "get out of jail free card" for illegal immigrants? F that. I feel terrible for the children but their parent are using them as pawns, AND many times the person with them is not even their parent but a human trafficker. Plus when an American is arrested or convicted, guess what? They are separated from their children. You don't have the moral high ground here.

It seems realistic, however I would point out that in his story, it is the preference of consumers to pay less that is driving the demand for cheaper illegal workers...Americans need to be prepared to pay more for goods and services for the America First agenda to work. We'll find out if there is an appetite for that.
Native Americans are the only people in this country who can truly decide who should be here or not. We white Americans shouldn’t make these decisions, as we’re not the first people here.
A bafflingly stupid take that isn’t grounded in either logic or sincere desire for improvement - it only reflects the requisite guilt based virtue expected of the socially-left white American.
A glitch in the Matrix. This man wakes up tomorrow, starving, in a war torn, drought stricken, diseased, wasteland dictatorship country. No identity papers. He tells them who he is but they beat him. What does he do. How does he find a safe secure life. Decades waiting to gain entry to, . . . some where, . . .anywhere, . . . but this land of mine fields and violence. Then thankfully he wakes from his nightmare to a room service full English breakfast, and the laughter of his children. . .

This guy sounds awesome. He's not exaggerating or lying or scapegoating like Trump does. He is focused on enforcing the law.
if you enforce an unjust law you are part of the problem
Great guy, thanks for having him on
This was a fair and balanced interview.
Polling doesn't show that mass deportation is controversial. It's a 60-40 issue.
Trump and Homan explicitly ran on deporting TPS and DACA recipients and US born citizen children of undocumented immigrants, and the overwhelming majority of the public is against all of those specific actions. People just like how massdeportations sound but they're not getting what they proopsed done because its insane
Lol, a glimpse at our immigratin future, is enforcing the laws on the books. Imagine that. The NY times is SHOCKED americans want to enforce laws.
Trump’s deportation plans will make the price of groceries skyrocket
Stop injecting words into the conversation that are meant to frame the conversation in emotion terms instead of logic terms. Open boarder is controversial. Mass deportation is not. That is logic. If illegal immigrants can come to our country just because of their local hardship, then I would like to set up a camp in your living room and be able to pay my grocery with your credit card. Please don't ever lock your front door, otherwise you are just discriminatory. If have a lock or ever lock your doors, then you are in no position to support open boarder.
There is no open border. There hasn’t been one since the 1920’s, you just don’t understand global asylum laws
Deportation and border control should have never become a left vs right issue. Border security is enforced in every functional country.
Blame the Democrats who believe in open borders for the longest time. 🤡🤡🤡
"You're not giving me the soundbite I need to affirm my narrow worldview and get likes on Bluesky, could you stop talking about policy and saving lives and tell me more about how racist you are?"

I’m a Latina saying this who is pro - immigration, but anti - human smuggling.
I’m Latina, as well, & the vast majority of us are pro LEGAL immigration but not these impoverished illegals criminals who are harming our communities.
It’s wild to me how Dems now want to pretend the rightwing is anti-immigrant. In reality, Obama deported the most in history (>3 million), supported this “kids in cages” & built the cages. Yet the media didn’t report on that, & later blamed Trump who actually deported far less (only 1mil). Trump achieved low illegal migrants/ trafficking by securing the border & “tough talk” like telling traffickers & criminals “don’t come!”
You have heard of dirty Harry , now we have Dirty Homan and i love it..😂😂😂😂😂
“Of the MAGA right.” as if America didn’t just swing 5 points in his direction due in no small part to our Boarder Czar’s on the job failure.
Trump only won the pop vote by 1.5 points. Getting a little ahead of yourself there, Chief.
Biden won by 4 points. 4+1=5.
Oh! You’re confused about how numbers work, but I can help. In 2020 46% of the electorate voted Trump, in 2024 51% voted Trump. When you subtract 46 from 51, you get 5. The electorate shifted 5 points toward Trump.

I love what he is saying. And i see how media twists what he says to suit their reporting.

This country needs to heal!

I hate Trump for too many reasons for this to make much of a difference. But I cannot hate this man based on anything he's saying in this interview. Reasonable, sounds like he will do a good and fair job.
Maybe you are programmed to hate Trump?
The same media who told you Homan is controversial and decried his association with Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation, insinuating that he is therefore dangerous ALSO told you every reason you should hate Trump. The propaganda is ubiquitous and powerful - but it's not accurate.
"Mm Hmm" , a frequent response. Tone says "whatever"
The left is full of snide arrogant people.
It's not the first time. I commented before, this guy's "mm uhms" are insane
Sounds like you’re just looking for things to be upset about
They’ll start with 1.5 million who have already lost their cases, and those who are already in our justice system, and large companies caught employing slave labor. After that it gets much more complicated and politically unviable. But at least with that, and stronger border control, and offering deals to self deport in return for being allowed to reapply at a later date without this current crossing being held against them, will all help.
I kept wondering where a convincing counter argument to homan was going to come and it never did. What he says makes sense
Out of curiosity…his construction bid story…why not go after the business that hires illegal workers? Why not go after all of the businesses that commit a number of crimes by using illegal labor?
I ❤ hearing this dude talk. He just sounds perpetually pissed off... as are the American people!
That’s a pretty pessimistic and negative outlook
Are you here legally? No? Then, you gotta go. Nothing personal. It’s business. May as well let everyone in.
This guy is the man
I agree with a number of the things he's saying.
We need hardliners to fix America
No… no we don’t. We need experienced, non partisan, non ideological career bureaucrats
I thought it was a neutral interview and it actually improved my opinion of Homan.
@jordanferguson7425 I dont disagree that Homan came off well. But I dont think that is what Herdon intended, thus the prolog.
Dude you are such a great interviewer. Wish these came out as vids

I dislike Trump absolutely. However, I agree with Tom Homan. Immigrants are welcome, but need to enter the country LEGALLY and meet the criteria for legal status. Border security is a must for every country.
Very informative interview, Mr. Homan! Thank you!

Probably a bad thing. Sounds like a zealot
Its an absolutely necessary thing.
Good thing.
What do you want Homan to say? He’s literally a law enforcement officer. He’s not a legislator or a policy wonk. His job is to implement the laws
This is from 2023 but you never aired it until now. Why?
What is "legal" isn't always ethical.
I want this guy to stop fentanyl across the border because I'm sick of the loser homeless people roaming around our cities and sleeping in tax payer parks that belong to children.

Bro if you don’t know why people voted for Trump you need to get out of your bubble. Or just read these comments man. Come on aren’t you a journalist?
Both sides of aisle have valid points, they just put emphasis on different perspectives. If you're a conservative, workers coming in from outside the country and working illegally is an obvious threat to economic prosperity for average citizens. If you're a liberal, looking out for the rights of the oppressed individual is paramount. When either side discounts the validity of the other's argument we have the situation we're in.
I am not discounting that ignorance of border issues on the left, or racism on the right, which I believe has piggybacked on this issue.
Conservatives put Americans first.
Democrats put the interests of foreigners above Americans.
Deporting millions of people who have been stably working essential jobs for decades and pay taxes through an ITIN will be catastrophic to the economy and average citizen’s prosperity. As has been forewarned by economists

Illegally entering a country is breaking a law
Thats because you think with your feelings, not your brain. We cannot begin to functionally absorb the countless millions who have poured across our borders. Nor should we have to because of your feelings. You need to take half a dozen into your home before expecting me to pay for it. Not to mention the insane threat to national security this poses - don't know about the thousands of Chinese and Arab men who have crossed? Hmmm, why could that be? @@WhizzingFish12 They always have the moral high ground by default. They are good people
I think the question is does he agree with changing the laws so that more people can legally immigrate to the US instead of trying to go through illegal channels out of desperation? This would also presumably save lives. And yes if you are willing to risk death or rape as he described then you are desperate.

The architect of the cruel, evil policy to separate children from their families. He is without a soul.
@@stephensuddick1896Illegals don't have the same rights as citizens.

That wasn't a really good border bill. It was an absolutely terrible border bill.
It was a terrible bill that would have allowed nearly 2,000,000 people a year to cross before it was shut down. It added a ton of agents but they werent for stopping them but processing them faster. Go read it.
