  • At the 1895 Hasting super tournament, ex-World Champion Wilhelm (or William) Steinitz won a brilliancy prize for his Round 10 demolition of the German master Curt von Bardeleben. Von Bardeleben decamped from the playing hall after Steinitz's 25.Rxh7+, and the former World Champion demonstrated the decisive continuation to the delighted English crowd. This game is an important Giuoco Piano game, a model in attacking efficiency, and a must-know classic for any chess enthusiast. #Chess #ChessInstruction #ClassicChessGames

Several people have asked me about this chess set. It's 1950 Dubrovnik reproduction set (Bobby Fischer's favorite!) produced by Chess Bazaar: www.chessbazaar.com/the-reproduction-1950-dubrovnik-bobby-fischer-chess-set-in-sheesham-box-wood-3-6-king.html?acc=2b24d495052a8ce66358eb576b8912c8 I purchased it in December 2017, and it's an absolute joy to study and play with! I reached out to Chess Bazaar (they have awesome customer service, by the way), and they offered my viewers 30% off on this set and other qualified items if you use the coupon code JOHN30. Please note that if you use the above link to purchase anything on Chess Bazaar, I will receive a commission. Thanks a lot, guys!

That was a great game played by the first official
World Chess Champion. I enjoyed the way the game was explained. Not only were the general ideas covered, but also the tactics were explained in just the right amount of detail to help understand the game. The explanations were very clear and easy to follow. I also appreciated that the video used a physical chessboard instead of a pop-up window with an analysis module. This was the first video of yours that I watched, and I must say, you did a great job.

I would love to see you cover Fischer vs Najdorf using the Najdorf someday😁
I personally feel Fischer always held back his most interesting ideas and lines for games that really mattered to him and think he really wanted to impress on that one. Of course it’s said before the game he said he would win in 25 and Najdorf resigned on move 24. The possible continuations were crazy and was an amazing game for the modern age!! Just a thought.

Knowing what you can and can't do, is such an important part of chess. Steinitz didn't just go for a big attack and hoped for the best: he actually calculated everything precisely beforehand (which is impressive considering how many moves he had to see in advance). One slight misjudgment and he would get mated himself.

Hi John, I have been following your RUclips videos and I have become a fan of your work. I have a suggestion for your physical board videos and I hope you will give it some thought. You have a great chess set and those videos are quite enjoyable, but my critic is that we don't get to see you on the camera. You have really nice and friendly attitude on your videos so please consider using 2 cameras while shooting those videos. This will be a great improvement since we will still enjoy your chess set, but we will be able to see you speak to the camera which I believe will be a great video experience since you have such a positive camera impression. Thus, with this suggestion I think your videos will improve and get much more professional touch to the overall viewing experience. Thank you for reading and considering my advice.

I've been studying this variation (Italian Game, Center attack) for about a month now and it's one of my favorite openings especially in faster time formats. I should point out that I'm not that high rated though so .... jajajaja

Great opening to study! It's a critical one to know, and so much fun :)

Why are the caps on top of the bishops inverted in colour? Were they swapped?

This is one of the distinguishing features of the Dubrovnik set. I like it.

John, tell me about the board and pieces please. I think they are wonderful.

Thanks, Darren - I like 'em as well! The pieces are a 1950 Dubrovnik reproduction set (Bobby Fischer's favorite!) produced by Chess Bazaar: www.chessbazaar.com/the-reproduction-1950-dubrovnik-bobby-fischer-chess-set-in-sheesham-box-wood-3-6-king.html?acc=2b24d495052a8ce66358eb576b8912c8 I have an affiliate deal with Chess Bazaar (they have awesome customer service, by the way), and they offered my viewers 30% off on this set and other qualified items if you use the coupon code JOHN30. As for the board, I think I received it as a gift once. This is the closest I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/2H9iATl
