You should review anything from the 1991 Wembley INXS concert, in all of its beautiful glory! Also, the INXS Channel for the videos you haven't done yet. The song is about Kylie Minogue, some one Micheal dated that changed her hair color for an acting role. I also recommend the Movie "Mystify". It is all about Michael in Michaels own words.

Oh my God I thought I was the only one when I was a teenager and singing “soup and salad bar” along to the song! 😂😂😂 don’t get me wrong INXS is one of my favorite bands of all time but that’s one of those great misheard lyrics.

@sincerely, K.S.O. The lyric was inspired by Kylie Minogue, who was INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence's girlfriend at the time. When she told him she was planning to dye her hair "suicide blonde," he used it as the title (this according to Lucy O'Brien's Michael Hutchence obit in Q magazine).
One of Hutchence's favorite hobbies was "corrupting Kylie" because of her wholesome image. When they attended the premiere of Kylie's film The Delinquents, she wore an extreme look with the "suicide blonde" hair that made her unrecognizable to many.

I would first describe this song as a lament. As others have mentioned this is about Kylie Minogue. It's the sort of song I can picture Michael writing as he sits on the couch or side of the bed while Kylie is in the bathroom dying her hair.
The first two lines are to set the scene for us the listener but also a caution to Kylie with the typical droll humour regarding the real meaning of suicide rather than the subverted use of dyeing you might expect from an Aussie.
Like a cheap distraction for a new affair is addressing the reason for the dye job, a new tv role or potential tv role (I can't remember but it might have just been for an audition). The job would be finished before the show even made it to the air. It's a drastic but superficial change for a dramatic but superficial existence as a character.
Maybe at the time Kylie was feeling desperate for a change in her work situation which is why Michael then comments that she has lost the plan (plot but plan rhymes more closely with began).
Second verse has her stripping (her hair of colour) to the beat of music playing in the background in the blinding light of a well lit bathroom.
Kylie can't see a thing because you need to keep your eyes closed when dyeing your hair. That stuff is nasty.
She squeezes the bottle and then it's all too late.
The Glory to You is "You go girl". Now please give me some of the koo-aid so I can be on the same page as you.
Third verse starts with the revelation in her hands, I suspect that is a reference to the brand Revlon who makes hair colouring products. The change is, as I mentioned earlier to save her from misery, like the drought prone Australian continent needs rain.
But alas Michael feels she has been deceived and changing her hair colour won't fix any underlying problems.
Now the chorus.
You want to make her might be a reference to television executives, or even society at large. I've met a number of brunettes over the years who have felt down about not being blonde or red or just something other than brown.
Michael is devastated, as you might be if someone you love changes their appearance drastically, especially to lose something you/he feels is magnificently beautiful.

She used the term "suicide blonde" to describe the wig she wore in a film but is originally an old expression for someone whose hair was "dyed by their own hand". i.e. not a natural blonde and didn't pay to go to a salon, just bought the dye or bleach and did the work herself, or himself. It was very rarely used by the 1980s when this was released.

I always assumed that 'you wanna make her' was rude slang for 'you want to make love to her'. It was common slang here in Canada but maybe not in Australia.
She (Kylie Minogue) had dyed her hair for a tv role so it is more likely the executive producers wanting to make her a blonde, and because Michel knew her before the dye job he felt that Love Devastation when she changed it. Can't say I ever heard that slang here in Sydney growing up.
