Hi I appreciate as novice woodworker the detail information when you used the mitre saw....in addition to the dimensions of the pieces...it is missed in a number of videos by many but truely appreciated by one who is new to woodworking...hence the reason we watch videos over and over
Great method. Just finished one today. I also used some padauk, but don't think I'd use that again. While very hard, it also seems very brittle and prone to cracking/splintering.
Great mallet, Jesse. I came over to watch this after seeing Brandon (Walkers Woodworks) use one today on his premiere. I asked him about it and he sent me here. Thanks for the video. Bill
Just made one, and it was surprisingly easy. My dimensions differed slightly from yours, as I was using the scrap I had, but it came out great. I cut a slight taper to the center hole, so that when the handle gets wedged outward it has somewhere to go, and is positively locked in place by the wedge. I also used two wedges instead of one.
Thanks a lot. I fairly knew and wanted to make a mallet. Best video out there. I think I can do this, although my stock is only 3/4” thick. Maybe a mini mallet?
New subscriber here. Really like this mallet! Looks like I’ll be making one. I have a bunch of different wood. Padauk, and Purple Heart. One or the other. I also have some 100 year old oak a good friend gave me for helping him make his kitchen table, out of the 100 year old oak! It was beautiful! So I will be making a mallet! Thank you!!
Just made my first mallet following your video. Turned out pretty nice, learned a lot along the way. I've got material cut for 2 more. Tyvm for putting out the video Jim B. Ventura, California
I found my video to make my mallet, thank you. I really need to think about safety more, I thought the 5 1/2" was more then enough for the miter saw, thank you!
If you are a beginner with a few tools, you can totally make a mallet; all you need is a miter saw, a table saw, a jig, f clamps, squares, nail gun, paralele clamps, belt sander, router table, a vise, some glue.... oh, and a mallet.
Hope all is well buddy! Been missing the podcast and videos. Had to check this out so I could do my mallet this weekend. I think maple and walnut would be cool
I saw your comment on a video of Walkers Woodworks . It took me to your channel and i love what i saw. Great video and i love the result. I want to see more of you, thats why i hit te button for you
Thanks! I like the angle for visual purposes really. It’s so slight that there really isn’t a big difference when striking something vs a square mallet.
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop Ah, ok, thanks for clarifying. I do like how it looks aesthetically but wasn't sure how it would affect the functionality. I know a lot of people make these beautiful mallets and then decide they are too nice to actually use so they just hang them on the wall. I am planning to actually use mine! ;)
Robin Goldstone Hahaha Yea, I have seen that a few times as well. I still use the very first one that made. I have beat the crap out of it and it’s held strong!
Oh so now we’re just using disposable straws Willy nilly not even for drinking?!? 😂 Great video man - I never thought of using a straw - that’s clever 🤙 I always used an old 1/2” or 1/4” chisel - but I normally make a mess 😎
Beautiful and simple! That's the best, but I am interested to know, can this mallet be used, or is it mostly for show? It's the glue I wonder about. Will it break?
Loved your video...clear, concise and relatively brief. I like that and subscribed. Question about the mallets.....is there any need to put weight inside them? I've seen some people do that, but not ever building one yet as a newbie, just wondered what, if anything, that adds to the mallet.
I appreciate the very straight forward and simple approach you took. Very nicely done. The Padauk and Walnut, along with the Maple is absolutely gorgeous. As a purist, and we ALL have our little nit-pics, I don't like seeing Brads driven.... That being said, I very much appreciate the tape to keep glue, and wiping it away from the lines before clamping (Bradding) etc. Way too many videos show people globbing copious amounts of Titebond in place and having it ooze out everywhere..including all over their work bench. What none of them do show is the amount of time it takes to clean this up. Nothing worse than applying a finish, only to find a place wont take any because of glue... I also appreciate you telling us the lengths and angles. Very useful indeed. Liked and subscribed. Glad I found your channel.....and now I know what I am doing tomorrow since I have a Friday off. PS: Have to talk about your set up. You can afford an Biesemeyer Table Saw, but you still have to clamp your belt sander to the bench? ROFL!!! Loving it. Keep up the good work my man
Hahaha thanks Kenny the clamping the sander comment got a good laugh from me. Thanks for the kind comment and I understand about the Brad nails. Some enjoy being complete purist and others like my just like to straddle the line! Haha
Well Done video! Thanks for puttin git together. One quick question tho, I saw in other videos that they include BB gun pellets in the Mallet. Was wondering if that makes a difference?
Hello from Scotland, I wanted to ask, does it matter what wood glue you use to make these mallets? I am making 6 mallets and i have various wood glues including Gorilla wood glue and EVO-STIK WOOD ADHESIVE. Regards M Johnston
2 questions if you don't mind since you clearly are very good at this. Do you find using 3 pieces glue together as stable as one block of wood? And I noticed you didn't angle the mortise allowing the tenon to bow out from the wedge. Any issues with the head coming off? Thanks in advance.
Hey Scott, I appreciate that. I have been testing and using mallets made this way for several years now without any issues. I beat the crap out of stuff with them and none have ever broken or lost the head
Loved the video, now I need to build one myself.... Quick question though, what's the thickness of the center piece you used? The dimensions are spot on and don't look out of proportion.
I just made my final mallet.... Practiced with pine to learn what not to do on my actual mallet... Ended up going with padauk middle section, tigerwood on the ends and an oak handle cuz I had a bunch of scrap oak. Thanks again for such an awesome video.
I love the plan and the design. The only thing I suggest is when applying any type of finish or varnish you should always us some type of rubber glove to protect yourself. These are still chemicals and they will get into your skin and body. you said you like your figures :) i can't wait to make one or a bunch of these. Thank you very much. God Bless and stay safe.
Awesome vid. When brad nailing the middle section I tend to split the wood. It’s not catastrophic, but the split is just visible on the mallet face. It’s not entirely unattractive, but I’d like to avoid it. I might try a couple grains of sea salt next time. Thoughts?
Hey there, I am super late to the party. But I am very new and cannot tell what dimensions of wood you are using. Are those 2x4in boards? Apologies for the novice question.
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop awesome, thank you! Also, just wondering if you feel having 1 vs 2 wedges makes a difference in the final product? Most videos Ive seen show 2 wedges. Im planning to make my first mallet soon!
What species of wood would you use for your mallet?
Currently making a mallet from bubinga and chechen.
Bet that’s gonna look great!
I've got red oak, cypress, sapele, walnut, and soft maple on hand. I don't think the cypress would be suitable, but the others are contenders.
Walnut and Sapele are my favorites
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop awesome teaching, very easy to follow. Just made mine from white oak and Brazilian Teak (Cumaru). Thanks for the help!
Fantastic. Lost my mallet, never built one. This is a perfect video. Thanks man.

It was a scrap piece just laying around the shop but probably was 2” x 2” or so

Absolutely! Been using mine for year without a problem
A good wood glue (ex titebond ii) will be stronger than the wood when dried.
