For context, this issue is pretty prevalent in the US states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey where the bugs are killing trees and ruining the ecosystem.
As someone from new jersey, I have turned into a murderer, feet, knives, glocks? I did them all

I'm from the US and even I don't know what's going on. I've never seen or heard of these bugs in my life. The US is a big country and just assuming everyone would know the context is just wrong.
They do say this problem in the United States.
@fanime1 actually, these bugs will eventually hit every state because they migrate... but it started as one state and its now the entire Northeast corridor and heading Midwest. There's also an invasive spider in North, South Carolina and Georgia, my thoughts were maybe that's it's native Predator from Southeast Asia but I'd rather not get the spider.... 😭😬
@@ndiesel11 I loathe lanternflies! The way they just stupidly fly at you, in your face, cling to your clothes as you get on the bus, bombard entire structures so it's more lanternfly than structure. I can handle spiders. Just knowing they eat the other annoying bugs for breakfast gets them a pass from me🕷
It just doesn't seem like anything is effective without a more organized prevention. Every years there's so many more. Wouldn't be surprised to see clouds of them this year in PA

Bro, PA, and NJ were drowning in them... we were seeing hundreds of them at any given time near the beaches here... it's so ridiculous, and nothing is super effective because we do need a more organized effort.
Yeah we get tons of em, especially in hot spots here in Philly. There was a reporting program (I think with UPenn) and there are certain trees that you can cut down since they lay and feed on specific trees. I'd never even heard of a "Tree-of-Heaven" before lanternflies, though other types of agriculture are affected unfortunately.
GMO tech might work. Already being used on diamondback moth and mosquitoes

Invasive species from Southeast Asia
Though if you live in the contiguous United States, you soon will, as their territory grows every summer. Time to pray for a God flood or something! haha

Invasive, they damage native plants, eat native food, have no native predators.
Their populations grow unchecked, damaging the ecosystem and destroying native insect populations. It’s such a big deal, as a trucker, I have to inspect and send in a report every time I load, unload, or rest in parts of Pa and Nj.
The fear is, the same environment they’re currently thriving in, exist in several parts of our country, and we don’t want them to invade those regions as well.

I saw these jokers in Maryland for the first time a few weeks ago. Oh they’ve got to be dealt with.
They already took over my neighborhood. They engulfed my tree last summer and I’m now seeing a bunch of baby ones this summer
On the bright side, dead lantern flies=more food for the birds.

They infest our trees. It's an invasive species, here in NY it's gotten really bad. I see 1 or 2 every day.

don't sticky traps also catch native insects? and other small creatures like reptiles, birds and mammals can get caught in them too.

East Coast is drowning in them, especially PA and NJ, but I was seeing reports of Ohio starting to have issues last summer... I'm not gonna lie it's better than having spiders like North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia...
Yup! They were an absolute menace last year during the summer in NYC. When I say they were everywhere, I’m not exaggerating. Everyone went out of their way to end them.
They must be from NY and/or DC. Reporters in those areas are so self-centered, they don't think about other part of the country - or other countries - where something like this doesn't exist.

They're invasive from China. Came right in time for CoVid, so we're just pleased pink with them lately haha Aside from the fact it costs farmers billions of dollars in losses every year now.

@@thegamingwolf5612 They drink the sap from trees and can destroy farmland. They're annoying too, because they will just stupidly fly at you, in your face, and they'll cling to your clothes as you go indoors. Plus when you're near a spawning area, they can be found everywhere, at every level of maturity. If you're in the US, one day you'll see them, and at that point, it's too late, they've infested your neighborhood.
@@thegamingwolf5612 they cause a lot of problems with crops and breed and spread extensively, so they could cause widespread crop failure if they aren't slowed down until the native birds and predatory insects decide they're a good enough food source.
Also be on the lookout for their favorite plant, the tree of heaven, which is also an invasive from china. If you see a baby one, rip it out, cos once they get big they're an absolute nightmare in their own right.

Sticky traps are awful, dont use them. Too much bycatch

Sticky traps could work if there is a mesh panel on top of it so other animals like birds or squirrels don't get caught on them.

One time at the pool there was a huge line so my mom wanted to pass the time by doing a photoshoot in a nearby park and I saw these nymphs and I cried so much bc I was scared of them since they kept jumping everywhere
They are hybridizing already I seen some in stars that looked little different

@@bejoyasmr8052 that's the bad thing. For example, somebody took an invasive insect, not this bug from the video, to Florida. The invasive insect started to reproduce and destroy a lot of oranges. This caused trouble for businesses and prices.

I haul equipment from pa/nj pretty often.
Every time I have to do an inspection on my truck, trailer and load for these things.
It’s scary to think all it takes is a couple of them latching onto a vehicle and traveling over to idk, say, California or Oregon. Washington state. Other environments where they can thrive with little to no natural predators.
It’s hard to find a predator for them too.
They do have predators, but when you introduce them to the region that’s infested, they tend to prefer native prey over the invasive one.

Idk what state you people are in but I’m from Jersey. Now those lantern flies depending on which region of the U.S your in are evolving to bite 😢😢 particularly here in the northeast. Such as from Maine and on down to the Mason Dixon unfortunately. There are more cases and sightings of ones with Cookie Cutter ant sized mandibles . RUclips cookie cutter mandibles.🫠🤯
