Awesome review Sarah! Useful information and points regarding this line of modern typewriters. Love the new filming location as well... and your nails!
😊❤👍
I love your videos, thank you. I’m in the middle of taking apart my second typewriter to clean it and your videos are really helpful!
I bought one a couple years ago and had to return it same day. It was the first typewriter I'd bought, and now I'm on the hunt for a vintage machine. I want something that's not all plastic and just going to fall apart.
Vintage is the way to go! Try going local with Facebook Marketplace- or if you want a professionally revamped one that's been totally restored, consider buying from a professional. I suggest The Type Space, Lucas Dul, Mr. and Mrs. Vintage, Nashville Typewriter, or IronFox Typewriters just to name a few!
@@JustMyTypewriter thank you so much for the recommendations! I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled this summer, and will look at some of the restored ones! It would be nice to avoid a big project, but wouldn't mind having to tinker a bit.
"(...)appalled isn't the right word but it's the right vibe of a word" felt that
I'm almost certain this is the same as the Royal Epoch with a different outfit.
I haven't played with that model myself
@@JustMyTypewriter I lucked out with having probably one of the few Epoch models that works well. But it doesn't have that "will last forever" vibe you get with old metal, you know? It type very well but feels like something will break at some point.
@@kerc That's how this feels too
I will say that one can buy 3 vintage royal QDL's for the price of one of these, and, probably, two of them will still work perfectly if stored in a case,
I've been waiting for someone to review one of these. Perhaps they do still have a place, and I take your point... but the build quality is just so inferior. I doubt many of the parts would be compatible with other models. I'm happy for key-choppers to use these machines though! Also, your studio looks nice, so well done with that. You may want to continue to tweak the lighting a bit, but it works well already.
Lighting will always being the bane of my existence
Sadly, it's the only new typewriter being sold right now. They keep slapping different brands on it or different plastic covers, but it's always the same cheap Chinese typewriter inside. They even sell it under the Royal brand. Don't be fooled!
Sarah: you can’t really tale out any part without breaking the machine itself.
Also sarah: i took like everything out of the machine
I saw one for sale cheap at the Goodwill a few years back and it seemed that the typebars themselves were also plastic made to look like metal. That would account for much of the poor quality printing. At least Michaels were somewhat honest in their print advertizing at the time about that poor print quality by saying in some terms or other that it gave your work "that home-made old-timesy look" . I left it on the shelf.
I've since torn mine apart for springs...
One interesting thing about the We R Memory Keepers typewriter is it's a great example of the difference in the way things are built in general between today and say the 40's or 50's when the Typewriter was at it's peak. The WRMK typewriter is basically a throw away item. Use it till it breaks, (if it's not broken when you get it) and then buy a new one. Pretty par for today where just about everything from phones and computers to home appliances are pretty much incapable of being repaired.
Compare that with the golden age of typewriters and as you said, all of them were made to be taken completely apart and repaired. You bought one typewriter and likely used it for decades. My old Remington typewriter is a breath of fresh air compared to all of my other things I use for work, my computer, my phone, tablets, all throw away, but my old Remington Rand Model 5 will probably be with me till I die, then get passed on to someone else. Basically the only thing that can stop the old typewriters from being used forever is the eventual end of parts availability, and some crafty people are even finding ways to get around that.
The irony here, is the We R Memory Makers typewriters, probably won't last long enough to actually make any memories. No one will remember the books written on them, there will be no lists of authors that used them. They're a fantastic analog of the here today, gone tomorrow world we all live in now.
I appreciate your points, and I very much agree about the lasting power of a traditional manual typewriter (of which I have 30+ so I'm a big fan of them!). I do think there is an audience for this product- people who maybe aren't as interested in the effort that goes into the maintenance of an older typewriter. Because it's a throw away item, there could be a mindset that it's easy to use now and get rid of later, and for some users that may be what they are looking for. A manual typewriter can be a big commitment! Personally, I now see the value of this Memory Keepers machine as my parts machine- I don't have any emotional attachment to it, and because it's built not to last, I don't feel bad taking off springs to put in my other machines.
@@JustMyTypewriter For sure. I’m not saying they don’t have an audience, I was more just musing over the difference between a modern typewriter made in the modern way, and what we once had. And how they relate to they time periods they come from. There’s a beauty in it, even today the typewriter can be looked at as a symbol of the times.
Hi Sarah, your content has been quite helpful as I just got into typewriters a few weeks ago. At 9:09, you said that your SM9 has the touch tension control on the outside. My first vintage typewriter is the SM9, and if yours is like mine, then that actually is the tab set and tab clear! + to add, - to clear the current tab. The touch control is inside the machine. I’m sure you maybe figured it out since this video came up but I wanted to let you know just in case you hadn’t. Keep up the great content.
I appreciate the feedback!
You're my RUclips idol. Such great content and well produced/edited. I want the "Vintage Typewriter" Lifestyle.
Thanks mom!
Great video review. Thanks for taking one for the team.
i feel the argument for "not made for enthusiasts and is more of an off the shelf item for people who dont want to learn everything about typewriters to repair an old one" is invalid. starting off, 200.00 to 300.00 is more than enough to buy a fully restored, cleaned and tested original machine, which means you get a superior product for the same price with no hassles other than having a local store or shipping, but a typewriter store will know how to properly package a typewriter anyways.
in the past month i have aquired 4 machines under 40.00 that do not require any repair, just some cosmetic cleaning which anyone can do in 10 minutes. 10 minutes of soapy water and 40.00 for a real original machine beats a 200.00 + price tag at a store. i bought my machines for creative writing and making homemade greeting cards which is esentially the same market as these machines.
I use facebook market place and local pick up which means i can ask to try it out and see if it needs repairs i cant do.
I also use that method, but I do think that it can be hit and miss. You might find a great machine at a low price and have no issues or you may run into something very difficult to fix and not know what to do!
Love the "BALALAIKA" hanging on the wall on the right side of our young host.

Agreed never stop making videos... but sort her videos by "most popular" and you'll see they most certainly do get many views! Cheers!

@@thethriftyfawn I just did that and she does get decent views! I think she deserves more. Shes funny and puts so much effort in her editing!
@@cats9254 Oh yes, Sarah is an absolute delight! She definitely deserves more views, however those will undoubtedly happen with time 🙂
@@thethriftyfawn Thank you both!
@@JustMyTypewriter you're welcome Sarah!!! ❤❤❤
Terrific video! Fascinating and funny, as usual. Thank you!
The quality of this machine has allot to do with what people expect things to cost. Vintage typewriters were very expensive machines in their time: My Olympia SG3's MSRP was over $2,500 adjusted for 2023. Even the cheaper portable manuals from the 50s-70s were over $1,000 adjusted. There's just so much labor, engineering and high quality metals that go into making a decent typewriter, and nobody is willing to pay what it would cost to make a decent machine. Why would you care? An older model works just as well, and can be fully serviced for way less money. For the amount of people who still use manual typewriters, there's more than enough to go around.
This thing sells for $200, which means that they cut their costs to the bone. It does the absolute minimum to work out of the box to reach that price point. I doubt that they could price these even a cent cheaper.
I think the typewriter looks more like a Olympia SM3
You had a buddy join you on the right end of the table at 5:12. Anyway, lovely review! I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one of these cheaply myself, and I will be doing a drop test. A big one. Because it deserves it! For being so... exceptionally manufactured
I have plans.....
ALSO- Oh my god just noticed that
@@JustMyTypewriter I am eager to see them! I need to find one now....
From a cyber security prospective, typewriters are considered a safe way to type your message to someone.
Great review...I sure don't like that typewriter and wouldn't buy one as I always go to vintage one but I suppose they do have a purpose in the crafting community. Great new set up too 😉
This channel is awesome! Good lord, I'm up to 7 typers!
Go used vintage all the way i think. These r not worth it, it seems…
Love this view ! I’ve been waiting so long to see a review from a fellow typewriter collector who can compare between the OG’s Vs. “Crafting / hobby typewriters.
These could be ideal for those who may struggle with a heavier machine especially if the typewriter isn’t out all the time.
So for example my Great Grandma - in her 90’s.. she doesn’t “do” MS word and finds that using a pen now irritates her arthritis.
So she doesn’t write as much.
I’ve offered her my Olympia Spendid but she found it “heavy” as it is full metal.
I’m going to look out for one of these 2nd hand and see if she like it better.
You got a bargain at that price - in the UK they were not sold to us directly only via a 3rd party retailer which made them with tax almost $300!
It was the only way I could justify getting it
It’s lamentable that we will never see the quality engineering of, say, an Olympia again; that Memory Keeper device is expensive but can not compete with even a musty old Smith Corona from the ‘50s.
We just don’t have the capacity to make ‘em like they used to. Not to mention, NO RIBBON SWITCH??? Maka me wanna holler
This typewriter is sold under FOUR different brand names where the only difference is the logo, and sometimes the shape of the plastic cover. It is literally the only mechanical typewriter that you can buy new right now. It's a cheap Chinese toy.
Beautiful typewriter!
The biggest problem is that you cannot see the text you just wrote. The upper part of the case blocks it. That is not a quality issue; it is a design issue.
Very good point
Next time try saying it the European way as "AL- LU- MEEN- EE- UM." It seems to roll of the toungue a bit easier.
Ha- Thanks!
so I was going to get a typewriter for beginners what would you suggest since the amazon market is full of these kinds of type writers i am kinda scared not to get one on Amazon where else can i find a type writer besides facebook and ebay
There are a few places to get typewriters if you're looking for a manual typewriter that's been restored. Try independent sellers! I highly recommend Lucas Dul, Iron Fox Typewriters, The Type Space, Mr. and Mrs. Vintage, Unplugged Typewriter Co. - each one of these have their own websites and are professional level repair techs who take old machines and restore them!
@@JustMyTypewriter thanks for the tip so if I wanted an actual typewriter not a plastic remake I would go to them thanks would it cost an arm and a leg for one of them
@@ltdan2809 It depends- These we r memory keepers can range from 150-200 new. You can find a competitive price point for a reworked machine if you don't go for a custom paint job
@@JustMyTypewriter I heard that the r memory are not good
@@JustMyTypewriter everything is made out of plastic I am looking for the metallic tick sound when you type on a type writer
5he royal on looks the exactly the same
Good videos, but please drop the music. Really distracting....
Thanks for the feedback!
I just don't like the name of the company "We r memory Keepers" it sounds tacky.
It doesn't STRIKE as anything typewriter related or RING a BELL [deliberately added "dad joke" KEY words here, such as strike, ring, bell, and key...]
wa wa wa waaaaaaa!!!
🤣
It's a symptom of the 21st century where manufacturers make things cheaply and you have to buy new stuff every year or so. iPhones should last 10 years for the amount of money people pay but they are designed so you can't repair them. A real pity. I've heard you can buy brand new ROYAL typewriters that are built in China. I have looked these up on Amazon (they don't ship to the UK) but curious if anyone actually buys them
They are similar construction-wise to this machine and to the Royal Epoch.
I really don't like the We 'r memory keepers. Send you some of my thoughts about it on Instagram.
Wait, do you play the mandolin? I play the mandolin and also collect typewriters, weird 😂😂😂
I can play the mandolin- very poorly, but it still counts!
In my opinion this toy is not an option for writing. This thing is overpriced and has no duration, it is a onewaytypewriter. It is so easy to get a good and fancy portable like the Olympia Traveller or a Tippa, an Olivetti 22 or 32 and many more, and they last and bring a case . A little research or asking a typwriter nerd and there will be better options.
While I agree with you, I also have to understand that I come from that perspective having had typewriters. Not everyone will know that typewriters are available or where to get one or who to ask
@@JustMyTypewriter this is our work, to help the searching people to find a vintage TW and show how satisfying it is so save it from being scraped. It is a mission.🙂
I think Royal still makes 2 typewriters. They get terrible reviews though.
It is under the "Royal" name, but it is a different manufacturer!
It sounds like a total rip off
But if you can find one for under 20$, it's not that bad
Hi SARAH!
A small suggestion from a retired radio announcer...
Next time say it the "EUROPEAN" way...
ie. as "A-LOO-MIN-EE-UM" it actually turns out to be easier to pronounce than the way we "AMURHRICAHNS" say it.
Enjoy ALL your videos on the great, old "CLICKETY CLACKERS" I grew up using before the dawn of the "PC" and the digital "WORD PROCESSOR".
I appreciate it! Some words just really trip me up!
Bravo! Your videos are very nice! this machine, let's face it, is utter crap; one must be out of his/her mind to buy this shit; for 20 bucks, you can find a nice Olympia, Hermes, Brother, Olivetti, and these machines, even half a century old, will perform flawlessly; all there is to do is do some cleaning/degreasing; anybody can do this! I found a Smith Corona Silent Super from 1957, I paid 20 euros for it, and it is like new...so, even if one intends to use a typewriter twice a year, why spend 200 dollars for a poor beast that can't even type straight? (excuse my english, I'm a bloddy froggy, and I still can't stop buying typewriters...about 80 of them isn't enough, it seems...)
