I saw that 1954 "This is your Life" episode, at age 8, when it was new! As a child, it was somewhat 'shocking' to see how much they had aged since their 'heyday' in films & now, at age 76, how relatively young they were, when they died! We loved you!
I don't know what sort of fan it makes me, but I find it too sad to watch their post 1940 stuff, they look so old and in Ollie's case quite ill. And while their feature films were great, especially Way Out West, their two and three Reelers for Hal Roach are beyond any measure of excellence.
Never failed to make me laugh. These were the very best comedy duo. In the UK in the late 70's they would play L & H films every morning in the holidays, loved them and grew up watching them. Never been beaten or copied, original and timeless comedians.
Back in the 70s into very early 1990s there was a restaurant in my hometown that played old movies in the center of the dining room - Laurel & Hardy, 3 Stooges, lil Rascals & Charlie Chaplin. This is where I fell in love with all of them as a small child in 1970s.
Stan Laurel was a perfectionist and would work on the film they were making until he was happy with it while Oliver Hardy would go to the golf course. He loved to play golf. He was not an alcoholic or a gambler. And Stan Laurel had his sense of humor intact until the very end. While lying on his death bed, Mr Laurel said to a nurse, " I rather be skiing than doing this!" To which the nurse replied "oh, can you ski?" "No", says Stan, "but I'd rather be doing that than this!" Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The King's of Comedy.
I don't know how you can say they didn't get along that well. I've seen hundreds of photos of them with their wives, eating, having fun, they seemed to do everything together.
they were best friends and loved each other according to Laurels daughter and close friends of these two! They spend a lot time together as well but some people spreaded rumours about them "not being close"
I agree, they just had different hobbies, Hardy liked to golf while Laurel liked to fish and go boating. And while Hardy was a 9-5 man laurel would stay late editing or coming up with new ideas.
Stan Laurel was devastated when Oliver Hardy passed away in 1957 at age 65. Laurel never did comedy or performed again when Hardy died. Laurel couldn’t attend his best friends funeral as he was dealing with his own health problems.
They first appeared together in The Lucky Dog 1921. Worth seeing! Also, Laurel's phone number was listed so fans could actually call him in retirement.
Not sure which film it was but the bit was they only had enough money for one drink and they were to split it evenly. Laurel proceeds to drink it all.. Hardy furiously asks why he drank it all and Laurel replies "I'm sorry Olie, My half was on the bottom!!"

He lost much weight later in life, but it was too late, his health was ruined. Also, I didn't like what 20th Century Fox and MGM did to them! Hey, that was nice and, amazingly, very accurate. However, Finnlayson's "D'oh!" Goes back way before "Way Out West." Some people keep track of everything, and someday someone will tell us just how many times it came up in their 106 films.
Early in their careers Laurel was a well known star in shorts. He was upset that he was to be paired with Hardy whom he considered just another actor and he "Laurel" was a star. They did appear in a couple of films before being paired in a couple of scenes but it was just part of the plot and after the scenes were not seen together again. Laurel was a perfectionist and also contributed a lot (uncredited) to their films.

Laurel didn't attend Hardy's funeral because he was rather ill when it happened and said Oliver who's nickname was Babe would understand because both knew each other that well. Dick Van Dyke recalled calling Laurel by finding his number in the phonebook of all places and recognized the icon's voice when he answered the phone himself delighted him since he was a huge fan. The dance in Way Out West.
