He could block the top rushers one-on-one. He progressed each and every year skills wise.

When Gronk retired, I tabbed him as the GOAT of TEs. I'm a Charger fan and Antonio Gates'career is way better than the so-called other GOAT, Tony Gonzalez. If Gronk played 2 or 3 more 50/700/5 years, he'd be the ultimate GOAT. Yes, he had Brady but Gronk was unstoppable. Gates was the only weapon after LT left the Chargers. Mahomes rejuvenated Kelce's career. These 4 TE's IMO are the top 5 in NFL history, bar none!

Gronk is the better receiver in addition to a much better blocker.
