  • This video is a demonstration of a ‘Balanchine’ style tendu. In this kind of tendu, the foot does not articulate through the metatarsals. The arch and the toes are active, engaging into a fully pointed position as soon as possible. Doing tendus in this way can provide speed, strength & efficiency in pointe work, petite allegro & movement in general.

studio la tecnica Vaganova da sempre, ma trovo che Balanchine abbia donato una migliore e più agevole pratica a qualsiasi tecnica. Trovo che Balanchine sia stato il futuro, l'evoluzione.

are balanchine dancers also advised not to stretch the leg into hyper extension? every time i see balanchine dancers, it almost looks like their legs dont want to straighten all the way...

Salty Sugar Plum I would say that because the weight is so insistently kept over the metatarsals, they don't sit back in their knees as much as, say, what you might see in Russia (the raked stage encourages a little sitting back).

thank you so much! this makes a lot of sense now that you mention the raked stage!

Salty Sugar Plum sure! I hadn't thought of it myself until I had to dance on one...yikes! It also explains why, in preparation for pirrouettes from 4th, my Russian teachers encouraged me to prepare with equal weight on both feet, but my British and American teachers asked for the weight to be on the front foot.

CiCi Houston I get mixed feedback from my Russian teachers. It seems the women put more emphasis on the front foot, but that's just my experience. I have a couple teachers that encourage both feet. I guess it depends on the floor they are used to and where they trained / performed

@@SaltySugarPlumif it's not in a direct academy, every teacher teaches always whatever it wants. In Vaganova, all pirouettes en dehors done en croisée will be with back leg stretched and arms in arabesque, boys and girls alike, this was like this since early 90's. Pirouettes en face from II position are done with equal weight and arms rounded, both boys and girls. Boys do pirouettes en dehors from IV position en face the same way as from II, girls do them the same as en croisée. I think boys used to do all pirouettes en dehors with equal weight and rounded arms until the second half of 1900's, it can be seen in some footages, and there is also the famous Nureyev's choreography for the Basilio variation, but things change over the time. I rather like for boys having both arms rounded and equal weight, is more "manly".

Question: since according to the title of the video this is not Vagnova why watch it only to criticize it?
There are a multitude of Vagnova training videos online. Why not confine your viewing to those things which you find acceptable?
