I had the coolest science teacher back in high school (1960's). He literally demonstrated a thermite reaction in an asbestos bowl on top of a slate tabletop science table. He overestimated the amount of reagents to use. He used a magnesium strip for a fuse. It started off slow, but soon the heat and flames were licking the ceiling that was 10 foot over head, the heat cracked the asbestos bowl in half and then it burned right through the 1 inch slate top of the table and the reagents dropped to the floor and began to burn through the concrete floor. Fortunately the reaction died at the point. I don't know how much trouble he got in for that one. But glad he was still teaching us after this. (Later he did other things like demonstrating a dust explosion in a paint can, and showed us how to mix up an unstable iodine compound that you could put a small amount on a piece of paper and when it dried a bit you could step on it and it would go off with a loud pop.) Today you could never get away with teaching those things in science class, but it was one of the best classes I took.

McCoy No, they weren't, The one window that is layered with flame is an easy chroma target for CGI adepts like myself, and I can see some gaps where they didn't mark it right. Why is there no camera in the 2nd shot? and why is the flame particle movement different between the two shots? The reason is because the program they used to make it recalculates the physics every time they render it from a different angle. This is the first thing I learned when doing fire effects.

It won't blow it up, but it'll disable it for sure. My grandpa was an Army Engineer in Korea, and he used thermite grenades all the time for that purpose, especially when they came across an abandoned tank. They couldn't use it and didn't want the enemy to, so they disabled it, most typically with thermite grenades.
