    what would you reccomend for a starting a horse that is too tall to be mounted safely without a mounting block - should I just do all the prep - stepping in stirrups - from the block?

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship  2 года назад

      We start a lot of warmbloods, 16hh+, and what I like to do is just drop the stirrup down a little to where I can comfortably step up and down over and over. Once I'm ready to swing a leg over, I shorten the stirrup back to normal and step on. I don't use a mounting block because you really need to be able to move with the horse when he moves his feet. Hope that helps.

    Hi there, thanks for this series on Nala. I watched them all, they were super helpful. I rode my 4 year old mustang for the first time today. Do you have any videos for horses that will walk/trot/canter great from the ground but then refuse to do anything but walk under saddle? This was my first experience colt starting. Not sure where I confused him.

      Hello Cade, thanks for watching!
      It's hard to assess exactly what's happening without seeing your horse, but many times I see people spend too much time at slower speeds like the walk or jog. Then the horse gets a bit too comfortable in that gait and it becomes much harder to push him out. That's why I like to get my young horses really free and moving out on their first few rides so I don't have to deal with that confusion later. If your horse is walking around super relaxed and comfortable, I would go ahead and spank him a bit with the rein until he steps up. Try not to startle him, obviously, but get him moving out as soon as you can, and trust him when he does.
      Good on you for starting your own horse! Keep me posted on your progress!

    I have a question! So my mustang has shown that he can buck. I do pressure and release with setting in the stirrup and he’s very desensitized to everything. But I am afraid that he is going to take off bucking once I get on. What do you think I should do?

    Hi there! I'm looking into getting a long hackamore for my colt. Which kind would you recommend?

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship  Год назад +1

      Are you talking about a loping hackamore? Dennis Mooreland tack has a great one that we like.

    I have been following along with this series and working with my nervous boy. He’s progressed a lot, but as soon as I go to step up he bolts. How can I correct this?

      Hey, thanks for watching!
      How is he when you saddle him? Is he completely comfortable with it every time?

    • @horseluver162
      @horseluver162 2 года назад

      @@zacharias.horsemanship yes, he saddles and lunges fine. I’m starting to think he has vision problems on the right side. Has a history of abuse and neglect from previous owners also.

    What age do you put your first ride on these horses?

    • @zacharias.horsemanship

      I typically start mine as 3 year olds. This one wasn't mine, and I don't recall how old she was when I started her.
