  • The SJCam SJ4000 isn't a new model, it's been around for a few years now, but some of the footage on RUclips suggests it's a bit of a sleeper, and much, much better than the ridiculously low prices they sell for would suggest. So I bought one.
Mine's actually an SJ4000 WiFi, but WiFI isn't important to me, I went for it because a spare battery and stand-alone battery charger were included, things I'd have wanted to buy as extras.
Oh, and if you go for one, make sure it's a genuine SJCam, there are a lot of clones and rip-offs on the market.
First job was to try the housing without the camera, then, using the default Auto settings and shooting full-HD, 1920x1080 video, I took it diving to see how it performed.
Bottom line, it's a cracking little camera; take a look.

Thank you Mike. i was able to order a couple for around 20 USD each. I think they might do nicely for stationing time lapse on a wreck or reef to see what kind fish life uses it , or on a down rigger cable while fishing. Another use may be to place in a stream pool when salmon and trout are running. These are all applications where I might lose a camera, but at under $35 with the SD card and green water filter, I will only cuss a little.
    They are expendable.

I've never made a water entry from that sort of height but I'd be confident the small size and robust nature of the housing would make this possible. You could try it with an empty housing first, or maybe put a dry tissue in the housing, which is how I always try new housings to check they're waterproof.

Hi Yves - I've used my SJ4000 down to 45m in the UK and abroad with no issues, but the housing is only rated to 30m so maybe I've been lucky!

You're welcome. I've since had the SJ4000 out to the Red Sea for a week of diving and I'll be adding a follow-up full review soon. Bottom line, still happy with the camera.

Mike Ward - thanks for your video. I’m looking for a camera for diving so thinking of getting one of the SJCams. Do you mind me asking which post editing software you use to reduce the green? I was going to buy a red filter but as your video suggests, it doesn’t really make a huge difference. Thanks

I just wonder, can you jump/dive from heights like 3-4 metres into water, will the pressure of the jump affect the camera?

    How long the battery alive?

Battery easily lasts for a full hour underwater

    How about the stabilizer?

Not very good in my use above water as a bicycle-mounted action camera, but underwater it’s largely unimportant so I never found it a problem.
