Great videos, just found you today. Im in the UK and every Monday I volunteer to teach Seniors the Cellphones,Tablets and the Internet. These vids will be great to leave with people afterwards. Very simple vids like this are priceless Thanks!
I've been using an iPhone for years but I've never really spent much time exploring what it can do. Thanks for these very useful tips. I am recommending this video to friends.
Wow, Rich! Far too much in this video for my poor old brain to take in! However, I realize that every part of this presentation depends on videos you must already have made, so I’m not feeling too overwhelmed. The big message I took from this is: “ You have have nothing to lose”. Back in the old days, this simply wouldn’t have been true - it was so easy then to delete a whole day’s work with one wrong push of a button, or even a whole application. But technology has advanced so much that we just don’t have worry about this anymore. You have encouraged me to “ play” with my iPhone and see what magic it’s hiding and waiting for me to find. Thank you, and hugs to Scout.
Hi Marilyn! You got my main point - there's nothing to lose! The iPhone is a Swiss Army knife and can do a thousand things. But knowing that is a bit overwhelming. Even so, it's worth fiddling around to see if something works for you. Thanks for watching!
Hey there Rich. Great job my friend. Very valuable videos. My wife who is over 81 and has limited hearing, can follow you well and has learned a lot from your videos. Even at 75 some of the tutorials are difficult to keep up with. Your style and timing is excellent and I keep learning new things from you. While I knew about the 5 ways, I didn't know how to set up the short cuts for them. Excellent clear explanation and easy to follow. You are helping so many people but you should have many more subscribers. Hope the rest of the seniors find your invaluable channel. Keep up the great work. You know how to explain it so well.
Wow! Thanks for the kind words. The channel is growing steadily. I do try to pace things evenly. There are a lot of tutorials that move just too fast for me. My mom is 93. She always tells me if I'm going too fast. Again, thanks for watching.
I am a recently retired night nurse. As you can imagine, a night nurse uses flashlights all the time. When I first started working, I didn’t have a smart phone and burned through sooo many batteries. Enter the smart phone’s flashlight, what a relief. One of my 20 something coworkers placed the flashlight icon on the Home Screen for me. I have no idea how they did that, but it is a very convenient place for your flashlight! Thanks for a great video.
Richard Bowlin - I enjoyed your 5 tips and have started using them. I have had a iPhone for about 10-12 years but have just found out about these features. I had to listen to you about 3-4 times & slowly getting into the hang of things. I am a senior of 77 years and I must thank you for opening up ways to enjoy using the iPhone even more. I can't wait to show-off to my son my new found knowledge. Abel
Hi Anthony! I've made a video a while back on how to create shortcuts. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/DaRIUhEuAXk/видео.html. But I plan on taking a deeper dive in the near future. I think your suggestion is a good one. Thanks for watching!
Throwing it is a great stress reliever. Especially after predictive text and autocorrect continually garble your texts. I'm being somewhat facetious about the throwing part. LOL
Wow! I am always struggling to take pictures of my artwork on the table that aren't all askew. Never knew I could use the level to achieve that. What a helpful tip! Thanks!!!
Thanks Rich I’m not quite classed as a‘Senior’ yet being 58 years young, but I am a real technophobe! I came across your channel quite by accident. I was asking Google to try & help me use the phone callender app. By doing this I have found your channel & I’m sure that I’m going to enjoy it & hopefully learn something new from it too. Mind you learning something ‘new’ shouldn’t be hard because I am really hopeless Ha Ha. I’ll let you know how I get on. Oh and by the way I still find it amazing that I can communicate with people from all over the World. I started playing a game a few years ago (to try & improve my memory) as well as loving the game I have also made 40 new friends from all over the World. I don’t know who’s more amazed me or my Children. Just to let anyone else who is reading this…… the only private information we know about each other is our names & countries. We are all very much aware of the safety issues. Sorry I’ve gone right off track……. Thank you again Rich 😊
Great tips Rich. Here’s one from me. I have lots of old CDs I like to listen to. I record them on my computer and save as an mp3. Using the cloud I place them in my iPhone files folder. I can then play the CDs on my HomePod. So far I’ve loaded 5 at one time without getting limit messages.
Great tip! I've ripped most of my CDs too. But now I have a subscription to Apple Music so that's become my music source. Still though, thanks for adding this tip to the list. I hope others see it.
Hey Rich, Thank you for the tips on short cuts as I wasn't sure how to set it up. Here's a flashlight tip I have used several times: when both hands are occupied but I need some light, I say "Hey Siri, turn on flashlight" and your work is illuminated. Also I created a folder on my home screen labeled "Extras" for things like compass, tips, vido memos, FaceTime, QR Code, Measure, HP Smart, Find My & magnifier. As you noted, most of these can be set up in your control center. I also use the file app to access documents that are on my computer when I am away from my computer. Thanks again for an informative video.😎
Hi I use the word “lumos” to turn flashlight on & “nox” to turn it off (fr Harry Potter terminology) it works super quick. Take care. Best wishes from Adelaide; South Australia🇦🇺💐
I learned something new. Thx. Did not know about Scanned Docs in Files. Always used Notes which has some drawbacks depending on purpose. Very helpful 👍
Thanks for doing this series Rich! Just found your channel 2 days ago and have been watching and enjoying your videos and they are helping me so I don't feel so helpless with my phone anymore! Thank you! thank you! thank you! I subscribed to your channel
Hi Mike! So glad you're here. I'm also glad you're finding the videos helpful. Thanks so much for subscribing. Let me know if there's a topic you're interested in. Thanks again!
Very fine instructional RUclips! I’ve been using Apple Products since 1989 but learned so much from your video! Especially enjoyed the features of the magnifying glass - SUPER! Thanks very much! (Also the shortcuts!! NICE!) Steve on 20 May 2023
Another topic that you may have already covered because I haven’t checked your other videos, but how do you get out of iCloud and protect the contents on your phone without it? thank you so much
I just ordered a new I phone and I was thinking how I wish I knew more about my phones , I don’t use hardly anything because I don’t know how. Found your video very helpful Thank you Cricket from NOR CA
I have had iPhones since they were introduced. This video was so outstanding and useful because I always find out something that I should have be using and don’t. On a completely different topic, I would like to inquire if there is some easy way to find your videos arranged topically. I just spent a considerable amount of time curating a list on the use of notes and sending her copies so that they would be in sequential order. She is 92 and still enjoys learning!
Nice tips !!! I wonder what band are you wearing on your right hand ? As you already have an apple watch, which band is this ? And why do you use it if apple watch can track everything?
Just came across your channel and subscribed. You mention in this video that you’re in Raleigh, so hello fellow North Carolinian! I can tell I’m going to enjoy your videos. I have an iPhone and an iPad, and your way of explaining and showing features is very concise and easy to follow. 😊
Rich, I have found Measure but can’t figure out how to add it to control Centre. Please help! BTW I’ve added calculator and removed TV remote! Thanks for your video.
Rich, I’m always impressed by how neat your FILES app is. Much as I return to organize mine, it defeats me. I still have a ways to go! I like and use the tips on Shortcuts. Thanks for showing shortcut creation so simply, yet powerfully.
Hi Linda! I do keep a pretty minimalist approach to my file structure. Over the years, I've found I kept track of lot of stuff I didn't really need. So I just threw that stuff out. It was sort of painful at first. Then I remembered my parents grew up and survived without keeping track of every pice of paper that came into our home. Now, I try to identify the important stuff and forget the rest. Thanks for watching!
It looks like you have a much better keyboard on your iPhone that I have on mine. Do you have a app for to make your keyboard larger so the keys are so very small for my big fingers thank you love your videos.
Thank you! Great information. I do use all of these features from time to time, but have not created shortcuts. I will create them when I get a chance. Thank you again!
You're welcome. If I didn't have the shortcuts I'd probably forget about them. Plus I hide shortcuts on the left screen so I don't have to look at a big widget on my home screen. But they're still just a swipe away. Thanks so much for watching!
Cool Channel, Great Idea to make these clips for „older“ people on yt. And its surprising how many these days watch clips and sub to channels 👏 Thanks for this service.
Great information! But why not turn on the flashlight by voice? I do that all the time. If I’m in a dark room, I tell the flashlight to turn on and it’s great.
Wow! Thanks so much. Sometimes I make mistakes but I try to get better with each video. For some reason, people have found this video helpful. So glad you did too. Thanks for subscribing!
Really nice info. I do have a request. I would like to have my iPhone in my shirt pocket and if I get pulled over by the police for any reason, then I want to say "Hey, I am getting pulled over." And that automatically starts a voice recording. And I need do nothing until the police leave. At that time, I manually turn off the recording to be filed later. Can you show me what to do in shortcuts?
That's great! I try to go slow enough so people can follow along but I don't always get the pace just right. There's enough info in this video that maybe watching it a time or two is the way to get the most out of it. Thanks so much for watching!
Question? You actually answered a question that I’ve been attempting to solve for a year with this video. How to create more “multiple app widgets” instead of only the top 4 shortcuts that I created. My question, all of these widgets that contain apps that relate to each other the main box each have the word “Shortcuts “ under them. I want to change each of those to specify the theme of each widget. Like personal phone numbers or Dr phone numbers. Do you know if that can be done?
I'm 78, I'm trying to teach myself how to speak and understand the German language. I find the voice memos on my iPhone invaluable in this pursuit. I record tracts of german narrative from you tube, transfer recordings on to the voice memos filing system, transcribe the narrative and its english translation into apple notes and don my 'bone phone' (I'm not keen on the apple AirPods) and then head for my daily walking exercise. As I walk I repeatedly listen to tracts of german narrative and thereby assimilate german pronunciation, vocabulary etc. . . . I find the combination of apple notes, voice memos and my 'bone phones to be a very useful combination!
What a great workflow! I've been wanting to learn Spanish. I may do exactly what you're doing. I take 2 daily walks with my dog and it world be a perfect time to learn. Thanks so much for watching!
In the scan documents video you talk about NOTES and FILES. I don’t use files, and only notes. What am I missing? In other words, when should I use FILES vs. NOTES?
Hi Roger! It's really personal preference. I use Pages for long form writing - not really notes. I use Notes for detailed stuff I need to remember. And I store documents I may not look at regularly but still need in the Files app. Hope this helps!
I would like to know about the organization of emails. Unread, read and stars are understood. I want to see all of my emails, but it limits my viewing to just 50. It is difficult to scroll back to find an email sent a few weeks or months ago. also, I want to know if Gmail will save all emails and not automatically delete them. I will look for more of your tutorials. Maybe it is in there.
Hi! Just discovered you and subscribed! Great tips! I tried the magnifier immediately on one of my pill bottles with very fine print. Amazingly helpful. The best thing about it is that you don’t need to snap a photo; you can zoom the image in and out with the slider. This is going to save me a lot of time and consternation dealing with stuff my old eyes can’t focus on properly anymore.
@@RichBowlin No Rich I didn’t know a lot you touched on in your video. You are way ahead of me. I’m a novice. I like that you like to keep it simple and accessible by using shortcuts. Thanks for all you do to bring us useful videos. Kindness, Teresa
Rich, thanks so much for all of your tips for seniors. I would love to know where one can purchase the handsome anti-slip black dots pad that was under your iPhone in the 5 clever 2:28 ways to use your iPhone. -Richard
I love the magnifier, I can use it at the grocery store - Trying to read those - Use By dates and instruction - You have a new sub :) Thank you for all you're doing.
As always, great video. Thank you. Learn a lot from it. The wallpaper on your phone looks awesome. Can you share where I may be able to get a copy? Thanks again.
Hi Rich, thanks for all the videos! I’m wondering what model iPhone and Ipad you use. I’m due for upgrading, my phone is 6+ and iPad 1st gen but a 12.9. 😂. They’re both doing great but pretty dated…any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
Hi Sue! I have a bunch of iPads I use for these videos. If you like the big iPad, then you can just replace it with a newer version of the same size. Me? I tend to use my 11" iPad Air gen 6. I also use my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. I even like the new base iPad 10th gen. Maybe you can go to an Apple Store or Best Buy and just see what you like best. I have the iPhone 14 pro and love it. I also have the iPhone 14 Plus and love it too! Whew! That's too many Apple products!
Wow! Thanks. Mostly I just try not to cram 20 tips in one video and also to talk a little slower so people can follow along. My 93 yr old mom reminds me not to talk too fast!
Idea for a video----teach how to choose the speed and slow down the fast talkers or those with unfamiliar accents. It helps when taking notes, or when, like me, you do not think as fast as they talk. Then, I speed up videos that are teaching visually like painting, quilting, and the boring parts of a police chase or prepping furniture before refinishing. Cheap bluetooth speakers are also great for seniors when the videos cannot be turned up loud enough, such as on my ipad.
Hi Rich. Just found your channel. I echo other peoples comments, I love your relaxed manner and simple straight forward explanations. That coloured filter over text option is probably useful for people with conditions such as dyslexia and colour blindness. Thanks for taking the time to make and post these videos 🇬🇧
I am always watching videos on iPhone tricks. (I'm a senior so I have to keep watching the same ones over and over. )
I love your calm, unrushed style!
And, boy, you showed me a good thing or two!
Hi Pati! So glad the video helped. That's why I'm here!
Here is another great tip.
You go to a doctor, you get an appointment card
Take a picture
Open the picture in photos
Click the box icon in the lower left
That will hi-light all text including handwriting
Click on the hilighed text
Select more
Then the top option
Which will let you save all the info as an appointment in your calendar
All you gotta do is make a name for the appointment
This is good to know. I will be going to my doctor next week so I will start saving to my on-line calendar with this tip.

You can use the microphone in the phone and connect it to the ear buds so you can listen to the TV where other people insist on the low TV volume.
Ha! So I'm testing out that tip right now for a future video. Do you like it?
@@RichBowlin I only used it a couple of times, you enable the ear app in Control Centre.
Can you show me what to do in shortcuts?
learned a lot. had to stop and reset several times but that is on a lot of instructional videos! Found a lot of old stuff when I went into files. HaHa
Press and hold on the widget, it gives you the option to rename.
Randy Zip: Did you see the reply?
Thanks so much, I didn’t know these cool tips! 😊
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching!
I love the magnifying app. I take a lot of medicines and the writing on the bottles is so small. Just found this channel and enjoyed the tip.
TFS, I knew some but your explanations helped more. I’m 72 and will share this with friends and family ‼️
Great! So glad the video was helpful!
I found the shortcut tool very helpful! Thanks!
An absolutely brilliant video specially made for me Thank you very much.
Hi Rich. Very useful stuff. Is there a limit on the length of voice memos?
Glad I found this tonight
I would like to know about the organization of emails. Unread, read and stars are understood. I want to see all of my emails, but it limits my viewing to just 50. It is difficult to scroll back to find an email sent a few weeks or months ago. also, I want to know if Gmail will save all emails and not automatically delete them. I will look for more of your tutorials. Maybe it is in there.
It would be good to say what iPhone and software you are using, because some of your tips did not work on my older iPhone.
Hi Rich!
Very useful apps. I found a lot of valuable information. Thanks for all your help. Kindness, Teresa
Hi Teresa! I hope you're doing well. Always good to hear from you. You probably already know all this stuff but thanks, as always, for watching.
-Richard
Great. I’m upwards of 77, I may have to watch one more x. Will
U have a place where we can repeat ur sessions. 😊
All my videos are on demand on RUclips. You can watch them any time you like! I hope you find them helpful.
I love the magnifier, I can use it at the grocery store - Trying to read those - Use By dates and instruction - You have a new sub :) Thank you for all you're doing.
Thanks so much. That was very informative
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
As always, great video. Thank you. Learn a lot from it. The wallpaper on your phone looks awesome. Can you share where I may be able to get a copy? Thanks again.
I got the wallpaper off of Pinterest. I really like it. It's stuck with me for longer than a day!
Perfect ! thanks a million
You're welcome! Glad the video was helpful!
@@RichBowlin thanks so much for the info and suggestions. I’m really enjoying your video’s…us seniors need all the help we can get to stay afloat😊
Very informative. Thank you
You're very welcome!
You actually touched on every item that I use! I’m thrilled to know how to find them, save them and expand my knowledge. Thank you in spades :-)
You are so welcome!
Great video - nice, short and very useful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Very good and helpful video - Thanks.
You're welcome!
I have a Samsung Galaxy A32 - can I do these things with it? It’s a very good phone, but no iPhone thanks🇨🇦👏
Love your videos! Thanks so much!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great tips. I am surely going to use most of them.
You're videos are not only good for content itself but a tutorial on how to teach.
Wow!
Thanks for educating use of some of the features of iphone
You're welcome. Thanks so much for wathcing!
Deserves a comment …..great information….. thanks for sharing….
Thank you very much, ill have to watch all your video help
Hi Rich. Just found your channel. I echo other peoples comments, I love your relaxed manner and simple straight forward explanations. That coloured filter over text option is probably useful for people with conditions such as dyslexia and colour blindness. Thanks for taking the time to make and post these videos 🇬🇧
You're very welcome. And thank you for the kind words. I'm glad the video was helpful.
Just found your channel. Your instructions are so clear for us seniors. Guess I have some bindging to do. 😊
You can do it! Thanks so much for watching!
Now I know how to scan a document. You are the best.
Thank you
Thanks!
@@RichBowlin How do you fax a scan?
Thank you
