I love how in 1946 you can fly a b17 on one engine, meanwhile in Warthinder if you lose two you start dropping like a stone
Different physics engine, but yeah, it should be possible. These planes had the ability to glide quite well even with low power source aka one engine. It still depends on the condition of the airframe though.
I ahve flown b17's with 2 engines a lot of times, yes you drop altitude but it isn't that bad
Technically if you get rid of all the excess weight, ie guns, ammo, oxygen bottles, excess fuel, the odd crewmember😂 you should be able to fly on one engine for quite a while. Plenty of 17s came home on one engine. Not so many successfully landed with only one wheel down though.
@@thebollock9427 'not so many' so was there an invisible wheel there or did God just go "Fuck it" and shift the center of mass in the plane that the entire plane could stand still on one wheel?
@@EstonianShark Nah man, if they were almost home, plenty of opposite rudder and moderate throttle would keep you on the air a fair bit longer. On one engine you're always coming down, but if your increasing your time in the air, might just get you home.
I feel like a lot of airframes have been lost to one or two specific trees on the runway approaches. Goddamn guys, hire an arborist.
Yeah I think the devs did that to challenge the landings more, though with a broken aircraft, it wont quite help much.
We used to call those "invisi-trees" ... caught out most of us at one point or another... god bless respawns!
Landed a 17 before with only rudder and two outboard engines... those were the days ;)

The one when he landed the B-17 without the Vertical Stabilizer caught me off guard so bad! The skill to make it FROM your target and get BACK WITHOUT YOUR GOD DAMN TAIL, is some skill. Perks to you Fishyyy.
My Dad flew in a 17 named Ack Ack Annie. He was the flight engineer/top turrent gunner and had to manually lower the landing gear on a mission when the electronics were flak damaged. Very proud of him!

I never quite underestimate Fishyyy's flying skill, but I do know landing broken aircraft aint the easiest thing to do. Especially with environmental factors in place.

man, watching that rudderless on missing an elevator and an engine slewing around to almost flatspin had me cringing
Exacltly what I felt!
1. You made me reinstall IL2 after getting a new PC and putting it off
2. It really shows how good IL2 is when you can pull this off on the regular whereas in War Thunder you have 2 engines and instantly turn into a B-17 shaped lawn dart
Some of those landings (you'll know which ones when you read it) remind me of this poem:
From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State,

The only reason why I don't like this poem is because the ball turret is statistically the safest place to be in a bomber. If anything they'd be washing you out of the pilot compartments with a hose.
Crazy thing about 17's is that they're basically one giant lift generating surface...even when they're half shot up

Some seriously bad-ass piloting you did there, Fishyy. With pilots like you, It seems like most of the parts are excessive in those birds and one could make a smooth touchdown having nothing left but the cockpit and half a wing. :) Nice job!

the amount of damage these planes can really take and still fly back home and land is fucking insane and well deserved of the name "Flying Fortress" yet in War Thunder your whole wing or tail will fall off after taking 6 or so shots from anything above 7.92mm..

General Question: What's the better situation for a 4-engine bird like this, having both outboard engines still going or the two inboard ones?
Granted, it's been a while, but on theory alone I'm fairly certain that's backwards.
While P-factor would be the same engine to engine, the greater moment arm of the outboards would require significantly more rudder (and a higher Vmc) to counteract.
I certainly wouldn't want to lose any of them, and I definitely wouldn't turn into the dead engines if I'd lost them all on one side (especially the left), but if I had to lose half of them and could choose, I'd pick the outboards and keep the inboards. It'd have the least impact on controllability.
If it got down to one operating engine on the B-17, the most ideal to keep would be engine 2 (left wing, inboard) - though again, that'd be a very bad day.
EDIT: Off the top of my head, in order of criticality I'd put them: 1, 4, 2, 3.

personally I thought the actors did fine, the writing was a bit cheesy but hey it was the early 90s.
In World War 2, this would be a nornal routine for a B17 pilot.

How'd you make it so the bombers don't explode the second they hit the ground, or that a wing snaps off like paper if one of the gear is missing? Il2 1946 always handled ground crashes very poorly, aircraft don't immediately explode into soup when they touch the ground without gear, they slide and break apart...
then explode into soup.
Sure hope nobody was in the ball turret at 03:07. That's the one thing everyone dreaded when you have to see a B-17 cash land especially wheels up or in that case landing gear collapsed.
Yeah I think I remember hearing a story about the hydraulics on the ball turret malfunctioning due to being damaged and they couldn't bring it back into the fuselage to open it back up and they needed to belly land.

Like the containing of ships,maps,aircrafts for the pacific theater, will be even more great with catapult & rearm function .
Only for pacific battle purpose, so anything beyond that are not required(dont wanna taken more sys space)

You're not just gonna get a modpack with no other plane types. I recommend BAT as it is very easy to install has a lot of planes and there are some ship packs out there as well. All of this should be about 54-65Gb
I recommend HSFX 7 it gives you tons of Pacific maps, planes and nice generic skins. I use it myself. You even get USN catapults. Take a look at the installation videos it's not that tricky but takes a while to download.

3 versions of B-17 were stock aircraft in Il-2 1946, can't remember if they were flyable but lots of mods let you fly any non-flyable planes, and adding new types/loadouts
@@zxbzxbzxb1 in main version of IL-2 are all those heavy bombers non-flyable. I tried to use mods but I didn't succeed. Can someone help me please which mods/patches can I use?

I set effects=1 for better smoke and fire. I think I can't get perfect because of video driver issue. It's ok, I bought the game in COG for 2 dollars, what a bargain
