I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night. I had the great pleasure of attending the rehearsals as I was studying conducting in Prague, but even having heard the preparation, I was still completely blown away by this performance. I can usually talk and talk about a performance but on this night I could barely speak, I was so moved. How wonderful to get to relive it, vielen Dank DW!!

What's your favorite Mahler symphony ?

i don't think I could have survived that first movement - the climaxes utterly intense and wild, but so confidently and expertly played, this is one of those rare performances where the musicians really know where they are and very often the conductor is just luterally doing what the score implies - the first movement has a lot of allegro triplets, a kind of rhythmic life that to me evokes the marches of the sixth, this is a rare performance that really keeps the momentum up until the big climax. my only quibble would be that I like the trombones and tam tam to let rip at the big climax. but the big moments where the music needs to soar do in a way that is frankly more rare than you'd think (for me at least)

I have been a BIG fan/listener of the Czech Phil for 40 years. Great orchestra with wonderful history of performing Mahler, and they still got it.
    Bravo 👍

That fact is so overlooked. The Neumann recordings of Mahler are stupendous. The Bohemian approach works so well with Mahler.

Just a minute in and I hear the lushness typical of Mahler. Fantastically rich! Even before the fortissimo abut 3 minutes in.

Great playing from the orchestra! This is the 4th piece of Mahler I've heard from Maestro Bychkov, and they are all truly idiomatic. A wonderful job of directing!

the strings especially seem to really understand as a whole how their lines interact polyphonically and rhythmically, their use of portamento is really eloquent and "right" to my ears. bravo, that first big climax that leads to that amplified expanded variant of the opening material, filled with the "lebwohl" motif, is so well done and the galloping triplets at the end of the exposition are wonderfully played and built.

Why are we seeing ads in middle of classical concert?! Put them in the beginning or in between movements, fine but cutting the playing music to show ads just proves distaste and lack of respect for art. Please time the ads more thoughtfully (and please don't tell me it's Google or whatever cause I've seen how others managed it).

At the first movement climax where the marking is Mit höchster Gewalt (with the greatest force) it felt too understated to me. Maybe this is too much of a quibble but it's something that matters to me when I listen. This was very disappointing to me. Great performance otherwise.
