Fly Fishing for Winter Trout - Woolaston Trout Fishery - UKFlyFisher

- In this video I set off to Woolaston Trout Fishery, with the goal of providing you with some winter tips, to catch the wiser fish. The bright colours work well for stocked fish and occasionally winkle out some big territorial fish, but if we want to be consistent, I often find drab colours are a much better selection. This will catch both stocked and resident fish as they aren’t so brash.
The conditions were against me, with a bitterly cold easterly wind and no recent stockings, I was going to have to take things back to basics to pull a few of the wiser fish out.
I had a great day fishing Woolaston and I hope you find the video both entertaining and resourceful.
A massive Thank you to Duane Bass at Woolaston Trout Fishery for a great days fishing and we will certainly be back in search of their stunning brown trout and carp.
Thanks for watching and tight lines.

Great show, thanks 👍
Time to get the learning to the water tomorrow. Thanks for the tips and grate content👌👌
Thank you for watching.
Brilliant video gareth, some really helpful tips
Thank you.
Nice video mate, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed Allan.
Great video, informative on what tactics work during the winter. Great angling and I'll see you on the bank soon 👍
Can't wait. We are finally allowed back out and the fish will be rested and eager to take a fly or two.
Nice video Gareth, really enjoyed it 👍🏻
Thank you.
Great video.
I also do well with a black or red apps both pulled and under a bung, an small nymphs or cormorants moved slowly if the fish are cagey.
100% I tend to start on lures and move over to the naturals if nothing is working with any consistency. This video was aimed towards fishing lures, but ill be doing videos on nymphs and the dreaded bung in the future.
Super video. Certainly try out some dull flies. Usually use oranges, but I do use your incredible cat and black mamba 🎣🎣
Usually, during the winter, fisheries will stock more anyway so oranges and chartreuse flies will work really well. If things get a little tricky, often a switch to these more natural colours will come up trumps.
Love it👍 really good tips and tricks in there 👌
Cheers. We need to get out and make a video together.
@@UkFlyFisher definitely! Will sort it out 👌
Great video pal 👍 definitely be back !
Yes!!!
i do love fishing this lake its a shame i cant make it there as much as i like to last time my brother used a bung and a green worm and he got a 14lb carp much to his surprise ;-)
Another great video and they keep getting better 👌
Thank you Paul. Great to see you back out at it as well.

@Koda Otis Yup, I've been watching on flixzone} for since december myself :)
@Koda Otis definitely, have been using Flixzone} for months myself :D
Just discovered your channel and are so grateful I did. Been watching avidly as just about to get back into fly fishing after a break of over 20years. Really out of touch with equipment & knowledge. I will certainly be buying flies from your website, but would you be able to give me a quick bit of advice on what line(s) makes /types etc which are to be used in a reservoir only. Many thanks and keep up the great informative videos. Cheers 👍
Hi Myles, I can certainly help. Email your enquiry to info@ukflyfisher.com
Really well done Gareth, you filled that with so much info it leaves me with nothing to say. Audio was great. Is it external mic. I am looking around for a new set up. Take care mate. Shaun.
Hi Shaun. It was all filmed on the GoPro Black 7. The sound is surprisingly good on it. The bits that suffered more with the wind were on my Galasxy S9 Edge. I need to get better equipment tbh. Thank you for your kind words.
Hi 👍👍👍👍
Hi Pal. Hope you enjoyed it.
Hi Gareth, great video as always, I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently and picking up some great tips.
Still new and a bit confused by tapered leaders. Some people use them, some people don’t. Do you bother with them and if so what is your set up normally?
I’m thinking on a 3 fly set up of say buzzers of 4ft apart on a 12ft leader having the leader have a massive butt and mid section is just going to spook the fish!?
I rarely tapper my leader. It's effective for beginners though and I will use it for dry fly fishing or in very very strong winds. For dry fly, I'll usually do 6 foot of 8lbs leader, attached to 4 foot of 4 or 5lbs leader. The tapper helps with the transfer of energy and leads to a better turnover of flies. For teams of flies and lures etc the weight of the flies will do that for you so tapering isn't really needed. Hope that helps.
All the best.
Gareth
@@UkFlyFisher great, thanks for the reply, just 8lb of fluro all the way through for now then.👍
Hi Gareth great video as always I see your using a vision stifu rod are they good rods? I'm thinking of purchasing 1
You can have mine for £200 used on about 5 occasions, like new. Good rods, I prefer a 10 foot though.
@@UkFlyFisher what weight stifu were you using? I'm looking at a 10ft 7 weight as an all rounder? I don't want a poker that's unforgiving playing stockies. Thanks.
@@CleddauFly mine is a 9 foot 7 weight. The tip is forgiving, I've had small brown on it and it's still great fun. I would say the 10 foot is more of an all-rounder than the 9 foot, but if you want it £200 and it's yours. I would recommend the Redington Crux if you can afford it. It costs a little bit more, but I'd a fantastic rod.
@@UkFlyFisher thanks for the offer but I'm after a 10 footer for the odd occasion I boat fish. Uttings doing them for £200 atm. ATB. 👍
You should call it a frog fiy
What size is that box shown at the start please?
Sorry missed this message. It is a standard Silicon fly box available from fulling mill, vision, wychwood. I'll be doing a video on fly boxes this month :) .
Hi can you confirm this fishery is open 14th April 2024 thanks
Hey there I'm still looking to purchase a UK flyfisher cap hoodie or t-shirt can fix? Link please cheers appreciated davie tight lines
Hi. This is something I am looking into, but with Brexit and Covid it's becoming more and more expensive.
@@UkFlyFisher ok 👌 cheers appreciated
Which line was you using, floating?
It would have been a 6-foot fast sink tip in a 7 weight, for the STIFU. The stalking rod would have been an Airflo 5 weight Floater to load it quickly and at short distances.
That’s not winter fishing conditions the leaves are still on the trees 🙄🙄
There have been a few times in recent years when leaves have been on the trees until December. As you can tell this was filmed in November and was filmed to give you the tips and tricks you would need for the following winter months. After receiving many messages as a result of this video I know that the video worked as intended and I hope you enjoyed it as much as others did. :)
