I homeschooled through high school. My "children" are great adults. Our daughter is homeschooling her sons. She is a Pastor’s wife in Nome, Alaska. Our son is a soon to be married college librarian. They are incredible people. I always wondered if I was doing the right thing for them. Oh yes! What a great opportunity that your children get to grow up homesteading. God bless you all. It would be fun for us to see a glimpse of your homeschooling day.

I wanted to add a comment about the carrots. My dad and I the past couple years have been adding a strip of heavier landscape cloth over the carrots after planting them. Easier to keep them wet and keeps them warmer too. We are in zone 4 and usually have very windy springs so trying to keep that dusting of soil wet is nearly impossible here. You just have to watch very carefully and take it off as soon as they are sprouting when they need the sunshine. We’ve had super good luck with carrots the past few years doing this.

With planting carrot seeds, if you rinse them before planting with warm water it will remove the natural germination inhibitor and they will germinate quicker.
Another trick with them is to lay damped burlap or a board that has been soaked in water (cardboard would probably work also) over the seeded area that will retain the moisture so the seeds do not dry out.

I have one, and love it. I have a greenhouse also. I drew red lines on the top area designating my first and last frost dates on both sides for ease in use. Generally inside a greenhouse (mine is double wall polycarbonate) is about 2 climate zones warmer, so I drew lines for both zones. This makes it easy to line up the slide. It's such a great tool!

I bought mine and am looking forward to using it. We live up against the Rockies in Colorado and have a bizarre back-and-forth climate with super-warm winter days and very cold spring days. Our last frost date is usually around May 18, but we've had winter storm warnings in early June. One never knows.
I would love to hear the exact varieties of crops you plant. I'm always looking to find the best-tasting food to grow, as well as varieties that will yield usable seed. Seed-saving is the frontier of gardening for me at this point.
    Thanks for the chat!

About planting depth guidelines, j recently learned in the Southwest, at one of the native American tribes plants their corn rather deep in their arid lands, to ensure more consistent availability of moisture. So it seems that rules are available, but there are times when the rules need to be broken

It is said round here that the best way to determine the right time to plant your seeds out is to go into the garden, drop your trousers and sit down in your beds. If it's too cold for your bare bottom, it's too cold for seeds to start.

I would really appreciate some more info on gardening with kids and how your family approaches teaching kids about gardening/growing your own food. Giving my children garden plots has been on my to-do list for awhile but i havent yet because im just a little unsure how to approach it, do i let them learn from experience or treat it as more instructional? Id love some input!

Are the dates on that planner even accurate for very hot summer areas (ie our highs are around 115) to take into consideration the extreme heat that could kill plants that would normally be fine in other areas where the highest summer temps are day within 5 degrees of 100?
I do have plenty of space indoors where i keep it around 62 degrees during the very end of winter and earliest spring. (I turn off my heater then to keep it cool as long as possible as temps start to warm up. (Example the high today in late March is 81 but my house is only 63 with no heating or cooling turned on)
