Her set at Lollapalooza in July got moved from the second stage to the main stage a week before the festival and she reportedly drew the largest crowd that early in the day in the history of the festival going back to 1990. The official video of the entire set is on RUclips. Her regular shows are really different from this stripped-down Tiny Desk.
Lollapalooza set is a good one. True live, in front of a GIGANTIC crowd. She's a bit nervous for around the first two songs, you can hear it, then just smashes the rest. It's a full hour long.
Be careful, I first watched this Tiny Desk at the end of June and have watched it almost every day since then. I’m an old indie-rock dude who’s become obsessed with Chappell. Brilliant lyrics, amazing voice, great music, what’s not to love? Probably the most amazing aspect of this performance is that it’s not really anything close to what she normally does. The keyboard, strings and backing vocalist were all added just for this stripped-down performance because as a just-starting-out, broke, pop performer her live production is normally just bass, drums, guitar and a lot of backing tracks and I don’t think Tiny Desk allows backing tracks, everything has to be live. So for this to be the only time this lineup ever played together is mind-blowing. It’s up there with my favorite performances by anyone of all time.
@@jabecker21 This. Saw her live in London on Saturday night, worst seats in the house but still the best live performance I’ve seen. Her voice is incredible, the range! Paid a stupid amount for the tickets but it was a need, not a want to see her live. Also only really discovered her a few months ago.
@@Defy223 glad you got to see her! I’ve been seeing pics and videos of those shows, looks like it was great! She’s playing a festival in NYC this weekend and if my band didn’t have a show I would be paying whatever I’d have to pay to get tickets. I’m really afraid the next time she comes back she’ll be playing arenas already and I’ve missed my chance to see her in a reasonably sized venue. Last February she played a 2,500 cap venue a few blocks from my house and I didn’t know who she was yet.
Same. Old straight boomer. I've been listening to music for 50 years and I've never heard a voice like hers. I'm not sure people realize yet that Chappell is beyond just a generational talent. She's an all-time great, And to be saying that when she's just coming out of the gate is mind-boggling. But that's what I hear. I saw Freddie and Queen live in '77 and she's right up there.
This is the concert that I actually found out who she was from and then I realized she's all over the place thank you NPR for getting me in front of her
Thanks for giving her a chance. You always try to learn and understand about music and artists. I voted for her as Best new artist of the year. I am 61 and have lived through many decades and adore great music of all genres. Her voice is unique and being from the Midwest we appreciate a good yodel now and then. She is original and creative, has great audience connectivity and seems to be surrounding herself with quality people. From the very little I have seen her speak she seems very personable and kind. Some of her costumes may be a gimmick but nothing wrong with that to stand out. She backs the look with a fantastic voice Through the years I have been a fan of many unique artists like Pink Floyd, Stevie Nicks, Pink, Queen, Elton John, Waylon Jennings, The Ramones, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Devo, Sinead O’Connor, Phil Collins, Pentatonix, Lady Gaga, B 52’s, Reba McEntire Taylor Swift, Eminem, Post Malone, and Ren. I really enjoy original artists that create a niche for themselves rather than trying to fit inside a box that already has a label on it. ❤❤❤❤❤
So Chappell (which is her drag persona stage name) only has one album so she doesn’t have a lot of different music. She was actually up for MTV Push Performer of the Year against The Warning but neither of them won. If you want to go a newish music video route go with My Kink is Karma. She has a VMA music award performance for Good Luck Babe that the performance is worth a look even if you have heard the song. If you want to do something no other reactor has done yet go with Die Young. Its 6 years old. Part of the stuff she did when she first got started. There are no costumes or flamboyance just vocals but it is one of my favorite songs from her.
Tiny Desk ranks right up there with KEXP's in-studio performances as fantastic ways to experience new music. The format is pretty simple: A musician or band stands behind a tiny desk & gives a generally stripped-down or acoustic concert to as many people as NPR can cram into a small office space. It's typically 3-4 songs. Tiny Desk is also unforgivingly up-close and personal. Real "top of your game" stuff.
She's absolutely extraordinary!! I've been fortunate enough to see her twice now. Both times she was just superb! We are so proud of our home state of Missouri, Midwest Princess, Chappell Roan ❤
She's using a technique called a vocal flip to sound like that. The beautiful thing she does toward the end of Picture You is a masterful use if it. Not nany people can pull it off like that.
I love her personality I really dig what she's doing with her styles I just don't really connect with her subject matters but she's got a ton of talent❤
Like you I'm just getting to know her. As for a comparison...for people of our generation she reminds me a little of Cyndi Lauper (based on my very limited sample size so far).
This is a very interesting and unusual performer. I’m not sure I’m totally sold but I’m not leaving yet. Very good band too. Such an interesting vibe is right. Very good reaction, Zack. Wow. Joe
If you don’t mind watching a tiny desk performance in Spanish, I recommend checking out: Nicki Nicole tiny desk (home) concert. She is an Argentinian singer/songwriter. Her tiny desk performance is one of my favorites, especially of the ones in Spanish. I think it has around 25 million views and is about 15 minutes long
immediately after that comment you say, "I bet she is wildly good live". You are literally watching a video of a live performance. I get that being there would be better but do you think her vocal technique will improve by the proximity of your ears to her vocal folds?
Hi Zack, I saw you over on Gina’s live/party today. I said I’d be by to request. I have a question. Are you familiar with the sibling duo from the 70’s, Carpenters, Richard and Karen Carpenter? If so you’re in for a treat. If not may I suggest the original video as a primer. The song is “We’ve Only Just Begun” from 1970. What I’m linking is a cover of the song from March 2nd of this year (Karen’s birthday in heaven). In my opinion as an OG fan, this is the best cover of a Carpenters song, ever, as far as accuracy. They didn’t “make it their own” they held true to the original arrangement and sound, all the sounds. The production is by James Wilkas, the band is from around the world and the lead vocalist is by Tori Holub (Ha Lubb). I don’t see what a proper amount to support the channel is, so I hope I’m good. I’m off to PP and will reference this post as links fail there. I hope you enjoy. I’ll come back and watch this video with a separate comment. I think I need to add, there is no pitch correction or autotune at all with any of this song. Verified by Wings Of Pegasus. Joe ruclips.net/video/J95lfJqo9VY/видео.htmlsi=zW0bpmFstq5QFkt8

She’s a fantastic vocalist and she uses her voice in many different ways. (She has never taken lessons) She’s versatile in her music. She also writes about her own personal experiences as a queer woman who grew up in the Midwest. Her main inspiration is Kate Bush and you can see that pretty clearly. She’s also been making music for YEARS and is finally getting recognition for an album she released last year. Maybe listen to Good Luck Babe or Kaleidoscope by her.
