  • In this video, we’ll be covering the best quest for player choices in the entire Mass Effect Trilogy. I’m of course speaking about Noveria in Mass Effect 1 - which has no less than five ways to complete the first objective. Stay tuned to see them all.

    2:45 Option 1 - Rat Out Opold
    4:43 Infiltrating Synthetic Insights
6:02 Option 2 - Give Evidence to Gianna
    7:46 Option 3 - Give Evidence to Lorik Qui’in
9:22 Option 4 - Give Evidence to Anoleis
10:55 Option 5 - Tip Off Anoleis About Gianna
    14:02 Mass Effect 2 Consequences
    15:31 Email from Lorik Qui'in in ME2
    16:15 Conclusion
MASS EFFECT 1 - TOP 10 LEGENDARY RENEGADE MOMENTS
    • Mass Effect - Top 10 L...
MASS EFFECT - CAN YOU SAVE THE THORIAN
    • Mass Effect - Can You ...
MASS EFFECT - WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU REJECT EVERY SQUADMATE
    • Mass Effect - What Hap...
One of my favorite things about playing RPGs is the freedom the player has to complete objectives in creative and interesting ways. Not every RPG does this or does this well, but the Noveria mission in Mass Effect 1 is a prime example of player freedom at its finest.
I could go on about Noveria for hours, and I probably will once Legendary Edition comes out and I can capture some of that glorious remastered gameplay footage. But for this video I’m going to focus on the first major objective of the mission, which can be completed in no less than five different ways, depending on the player’s choices.
For a bit of context - Commander Shepard and crew arrive on Noveria with the goal of tracking down Matriarch Benezia, a powerful Asari and Saren’s second-in-command. Benezia recently arrived on Noveria to check in on a secret research project that Saren is conducting at the Peak 15 station. Noveria is a haven for corporations conducting classified R&D projects, outside the prying eyes of government officials. As such, Shepard’s Spectre status offers little in the way of cooperation from the local administrator, a churlish Salarian named Anoleis.
Shepard needs to get to Peak 15 to track down Benezia, but in order to do this the Commander first needs to obtain a garage pass to allow the crew to leave Port Hanshan, which is currently on lockdown due to a snowstorm.
This first objective - getting a garage pass - seems simple and maybe even a bit boring on the face of it. But with five different ways to complete this objective, navigating corporate espionage and shady people to achieve Shepard’s goals is far from boring. This freedom of choice is what makes the quest so interesting and fun.

With the original release version of ME1 I always had some general protection fault crash on Noveria often in the hallway to go to the tram or just after you leave Port Hanshan with the Mako. Then they did an update for the game to allow full HD resolutions a few years ago and I never had that issue after that. The crash often meant having to do most of the mission multiple times in hopes to get past the area that triggers the crash. Extremely frustrating. I mainly play through with the Legendary Edition when the mood strikes me.

Good video. Probably my favourite mission out of any RPG. It gets even more complex when you arrive at Peak 15.
I only recently discovered that you can cure the virus and get into a fight with the undercover Asari lady and I’m speaking as someone whose replayed this game countless times and has never seen that outcome.
The scope of choices and outcomes on Noveria is crazy.
When legendary edition drops, I really encourage people to mess around with that mission by save scumming. There’s a lot of possibilities.

I'm glad to see someone that really gets why Noveria was so great. The mission format in ME1 is a big part of the reason why the game is so good.
I always thought it was a mistake that they abandoned this kind of format in ME2 and ME3. I really wish they would bring it back in the next Mass Effect.
Funny enough, ME1 almost seems more similar to KOTOR than it does to ME2 and 3.
Noveria and the first visit to the Citadel are missions that always stood out to me because of their hub area structure and multiple paths to the same objective.
All while still keeping the hub area a "Combat Zone" in some parts.

Funnnnn fact: if you convince the Turian to testify with either speech check, you can talk to him again, ask a question, and then when asking about “something else” to pull you back into the main dialogue, you can re-attempt to force him to testify with the same speech checks. Do this over and over for infinite paragon or renegade early in ME1 and you essentially allow yourself to use whatever dialogue afterwards without fear of being paragon or renegade ENOUGH for some speech checks later on (of course assuming you leveled paragon or renegade)

I really wish I could take *full* advantage of being a spectre. There could have been an even more direct route for renegade players. It would have been much faster and more convenient to just shoot Anoleis, and take a pass off of his body; when he doesn't give Commander Shepard clearance to Peak 15. Noveria is still in Council Space, and Anoleis is clearly slowing down Shepard's investigation; so killing him would be an acceptable route.

You can also choose option one after getting Qui'in's evidence but before giving it away to anyone, do the assignments on Peak 15, go back to Anoleis, let him pay you for your information about the situation there (without really telling him anything worthwhile) and help Gianna against Anoleis anyways. It is not really a sixth way to get the garage pass, since you get it basically the same way is in the first option, but you get out some extra credits out of the administrator before getting him arrested.
    [Edit]
Furthermore you can max out XPs by convincing Opold into telling you, who's the package for, than first talk to Anoleis (without telling him about the smuggling), talk to Gianna and do the whole Synthetic Inside quest until you convince Lorik to testify (it is really important that you do that *before* heading out to Peak 15, since he won't be there anymore afterwards) but DON'T speak to Gianna, then go back to Opold, tell him that you keep the package (you will receive the upgrade) and immediately after go to Anoleis and sell Opold out, show him the mod and convince him to keep it thereafter (so you will get the mod twice), you will get the garage pass and a reward (you can maximise it by with a renegade/paragon option). Leave for Peak 15 and when you come back, go to Anoleis, sell your testimony about what happened there (you can be very vague) and then talk to Gianna about the evidence and get him arrested.
