  • By the end of year 2017, Beijing Subway opened the first maglev train line, the Line S1. Starting from the very west of Beijing city, a place called JIN'AN QIAO, Line S1 travels further west and south towards a town named Mentougou, which is segregated by a loaf of hills. Then by the end of 2021, the line extends one stop eastward to PING'GUOYUAN (Apple Grove), which is served by Line 1 and Line 6. As a result, this maglev line has double interchange stations with other mass transit subway lines, ameliorating crowds during rush hours. Up till now, the line has 8 stations with 11 kilometers (7 miles) long.
The line has brought significant development along the places it goes by. Specifically, the fields which used to be empty are now filled with resident apartment buildings, shopping centers, high-tech schools, culture and educational parks. Especially, the abandoned Shougang (Capital Iron Factory) Park at JIN'ANQIAO Station has become one of the resorts holding Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, while other parts of it became theme parks and high-tech areas. As a result, the daily ridership of Line S1 has boosted massively in recent years.
One station along the line is named "SHANG'AN (上岸)". While its original meaning in Mandarin Chinese is "going on shore", it also means "achieving great success" in modern Chinese cultures. Therefore, during times around important exams, including Gaokao (Chinese SAT), grad school tests, and job application seasons, many citizens travel to this station to pray for good luck.
This video is filmed during an afternoon sunset, having golden sky above mountains far away.
    Thanks for watching!

Weird that it's called SUBway, when it seems to be entirely above street level. More like an elevated train.

Indeed. While in many parts of the world, whether a line is defined as a "Sub"way is based on its designated crowd flow, the unit weight of tracks and the size of train cars, rather than if a line is above ground or not. Especially in cities of China, once a line is designed as a metropolitan mass-transit rail, even most of the line is above ground, it is still called a "subway" or "metro" line.
