Her look at the end of the song... She was singing straight from her heart. It's so sad that she never got the chance to be married to someone who truely loved her and to to be a mother.
All that was partly her own fault. Anorexia had taken over her life. She looked at least 10 years older then her age 26 here. By age 28, she looked 20 years older & couldn't see that. By 1982 (age 32) she looked 30 years older. Karen aged like Moses. Her obsessive weight reduction & dieting wouldn't have let her birth a child. You can't weigh 85 lbs. I'm sorry, it wasn't the way it was supposed to be. She needed to be put away for observation for awhile in someone's care.
Poor Karen was ill here. She looked so tired and most likely was feeling exhausted. Her voice was still so beautiful, so perfect. Rest in peace sweet Karen....❤
I say this all the time, that look at the end sums up Karen's life so perfectly. Sad, haunting, beautiful, bittersweet, angelic. I could go on and on but everyone, look at that ending expression. So evocative and powerful.
Yes. There's a "huh...yeah, suuuure I will" about that little sequence of facial expressions from KC that rips your heart out and chucks it across the room...
She was desperate to marry someone who would be romantic as she was, and have kids and settle down to a perfect life. She thought she found her prince in 1980 but he turned out to be a frog. So sad because she was glowingly happy on her wedding day (despite almost calling it off). Too bad she didn't, because the failing marriage triggered her anoxeria/bulimia and early death. Such a huge tragedy.
I occasionally binge on the Carpenters (whom I’ve loved since 1972) but then I get incredibly sad and I have to stop. She was a stranded angel who deserved to live a long, happy and contented life.
She had a warmth and a smile in her voice. You could hear her smiling. I was 25 when Karen died. I heard it in the news, at 4am, while driving my truck on the night shift in the u.k. I know where i was in February 4 1983. Didn't cry. I was very sad. Played Karens beautiful voice for days afterwards in the truck and car. Had to buy a new cassette cause the one i had wore out. Im 65 now. Retired. When i hear her, i can't help but think of the wonderful music we never got to hear.
One cannot NOT listen to Karen sing - as soon as she begins you stop what you're doing and listen up - she has full control of your heart and emotions - you have no choice - it's futile to resist, but why would you want to? One of the most beautiful and mesmerizing sounds you will ever hear: Karen Carpenter singing a song, any song.
She saved my life as a kid. I would lock my door and have my headphones on listening to this beautiful woman's voice. It's the only thing I could to get away from horrible father.
I saw them so many times in concert in the 70s and snuck backstage in July of 1975 where I got to meet them both. It was so exciting for a 17 year old superfan! I had a sister named Karen(2 yrs older) and I played drums in high school because of Karen and had a super crush on Richard!! I wish Karen had found the love she deserved. It pleases me no end that all these people on RUclips are "discovering" Karen and Richard and how amazing Karen's voice was. My world died a little when she passed away and there has never been another like her. R.I.P KC.
I cried for weeks when I heard Karen had passed. I was in my early 20s, & I was a huge Carpenters fan. I was devastated. I adored Karen. She was very special to me. And I can still say, as I always have, that she has the most beautiful female voice that ever existed. I think you were born several decades too late Salvo!! Living during the 60s 70s & 80s music is something I thank God for every day! You would have loved it!!
Unlike any others, never to be replicated. Her voice was angelic, Richard's arrangements, harmonies, piano, songwriting (with John Bettis), were his vision. Ironically, she considered herself a drummer foremost...she was a very accomplished drummer. Early on, she had to be coaxed to step out front, from behind her beloved drums. Richard told her that people wanted to see her...not hidden behind her drums. They compromised; she would step out from behind her drums on ballads. She's now been gone longer than she was here, dying at 32 from complications of anorexia nervosa. She left this earth at the tender age of 32...much too soon. But, Carpenter's music lives on...credit to Richard Carpenter for keeping their musical legacy alive. I'll never tire of her voice, or their music, harmonies. I'm a forever fan.
A performance like that could not have been done from behind her beloved drum kit. Karen was blessed and cursed by her multiple talents. This performance rips out our insides and leaves us just a puddle of goo on the floor. Everyone was in awe of her emotional takes on every song that she sang! She was a legend in her own time.
I grew up in the Carpenters era..I was lucky..great songs yes but Karen's voice lifted them to magnificence..she was THE GOAT..shame she didn't realise it..she was bullied and put down by her mother..used as a bank by her husband and was resented by Richard for her popularity..rest in peace
The recording of this is even more flawless if you can imagine. Their song Solitaire off the Horizon album is one I think would blow you away! Thanks for your great reactions!!
You need a hug, Salvo. We all do after a song like this and knowing. This and Goodbye To Love, back to back would just, well you know. Richard and John wrote both. When Karen died it took me damn near 40 years to seek out Carpenters music again. My roommate of 8 years had no idea I was the fanboy I am. My vinyl sat silent in the rack I didn’t play lists, nothing. Then one day I found reactors like you and I watched a Carpenters reaction where they said they didn’t know anything other then they were requested to watch it. I sat back because I knew what was about to happen. That broke the void and I’m bathing in Karen’s voice again. I’m seeing what Richard has done since and I bought an LP, CD and book. Keep doing what you’re doing, your emotions say it all. Good job.
@@michaelasay8587 it was passive. But yes, I didn’t play my vinyl or buy CDs etc. I didn’t turn a station or such but I didn’t seek out their music for a damn long time. It was like a relief valve discovering reactors. Issue? Maybe but that’s over and moving forward.
I was 25 when Karen passed away and tho I had noticed her health declining drastically, I was devastated when I heard she died. I have seen this so many times and I still shed tears when I see it. God I wish this beautiful woman with such an ANGELIC voice had found the true love she so richly deserved. Enjoyed your reaction to this extremely talented duo!
Your reaction with your face in your hands is just about right. It was Karen's favourite of her own songs, ans she delivers a truly stunning version, which always reduces me to tears.
One of my favorite memories is seeing the Carpenters in concert in Johnstown, PA. How blessed I am to have these special memories of Karen and Richard.
My Mom and I were fortunate enough to attend the Carpenters concert at Birmingham Hippodrome during their 1976 UK tour (rearranged from a year earlier when they had to cancel due to Karen's illness). The performance in this video comes from a TV special they did for BBC TV in London, just a few days after the concert we attended, and is basically a shorter version of their live show, so it is the closest thing I'll ever get to reliving that very special evening. "I need to be in love" actually sounds even better live than it does on the "A Kind of Hush" album. The best part of the Birmingham concert experience for us was that we somehow managed to get seats on the front row, and during their performance of "Sing", Karen and Richard came down into the audience and got people singing along. Karen came along our row, and my Mom and I actually shared a microphone, briefly, with the lady who I firmly believe had the greatest female pop voice yet heard. Incidentally, the whole of the TV special is currently available on BBC iPlayer for viewers who have access to that, under the title "The Carpenters: A World of Music".
Between the voice and lyrics, I find their songs to be perfection, heartbreaking (Even the ones that aren’t supposed to be) like a hot knife through butter. ❤❤
The instruments, lyrics and Karen’s voice hurts because we know she sadly passed away at 32 she had so much more life to live and she was married and I think I read somewhere she wanted kids and the lyric “I know I need to be in love and I know I’ve wasted to much time” god that is such a punch in the gut and such a unfortunate loss but Karen Carpenter was and still is a powerhouse
Your reaction is what I see time and again. Those who hear the beauty of the music of Karen and Richard are instantly smitten. Whenever their music played on radio in the 1979s and 80s, it was an event. Everyone was quiet and peaceful. They gave us audio gifts which we continue to enjoy.
If you get a chance you need to hear her Christmas song "Merry Christmas Darling"It's just such a beautiful song for the holidays and it steers away from your typical holiday songs With the season among us give it a shot I don't think you'll be disappointed but then how could you be disappointed with Karen Carpenter.
Just beautiful, Karens voice is exquisite, Richards musicianship is superb. Their songs are such highly crafted masterpieces. Topped with heartbreaking lyrics that really give a sense of longing, when you think of all the confidence and self doubt she went through it makes it all the more poignant.
The last song Karen ever recorded was a Paul Williams/Roger Nichols ballad called "Now" that is one of her finest vocal performances. The fact that her vocal was just a scratch track to familiarize the other musicians with the song is a testament to her immense talent. There is no live performance (obviously) but the song is well worth a listen, and there are a number of fan-assembled videos out there.
I loved all her songs, just like you do, Salvo. She held everybody’s heart back then, & when we heard she died, it was such a huge loss to all of us. 😪♥️
My favorite singer through my high school years. Her voice was so intimate and true. Thank you for being sensitive in your reaction...she was one of a kind.
I think this was one of the most beautiful voices that ever existed. I don’t think we realized at all what we lost when we lost Karen. Thank heaven, we have her recorded so that generations can know that this woman once lived and blessed us with her gift. I think watching your reaction. You do understand that. I still listen to Karen every day all these years later.
There is only one word to describe this song by Karen and Richard ….. PERFECTION! Thank you for the amazing level of respect that you give them through your reaction! ♥️
Karen has an incredible voice and tone that brings out the emotion that she sends out. Most of us have been in this situation, or knew some who has been in it, and can relate to the lyrics of this song.
Everytime I hear Karen sing, it just confirms what I believe. Somewhere, somehow, there was some sort of screw-up in the matrix. This incredible woman should not have passed at such a young age. Had she lived she'd be in her early 70's now and I am certain she would still be reigning in the hits! Her voice..... there is no one like her

I wish you could have been there in 1976 , and she randomly meet her ,,, she needed the kind of LOVE you could have offered her ,,, your a dam sweet man. I cried when I saw your reaction to the video
SalvoG, thank you for your poignant reaction to the peerless Carpenters. Karen Carpenter's inimitable voice and her appealing personality touch your heart and linger in your memory forever. There will never be another like her. So thankful that she was with us even though it was way too brief.
My god Karen carpenter is so ,,, soo ,,, so amazing,, the best singer male or frog ALL TIME ! She doesn’t get enough attention ,,, thanks to you she is remembered ! Thank you
Karen was truly one of a kind. Every time you hear her sing it takes you to a place that no one else can take you. Thank you for your reaction because I realize you get it. I enjoyed watching you react to this exquisite person.
My friend, there are lots of Carpenters reaction videos here on RUclips, but yours is far and away the most affecting. Watching your face and silent reaction gestures and quiet gasps sO reminds the rest of us of our own journeys of discovery as we fell in love with the music of Karen and Richard. Me, I've been a huge fan for 50 years now, since the 1971 beige 'Rainy Days..' album. All these years later, her sudden deep register dips can still make my spine shiver! Loved my listen/viewing, thanks!🙏🥰
Love your reactions to the Carpenters. So authentic. And so spot on. Karen was pure perfection. I seem to remember her heart was truly with her drum set, and boy could she play the drums. But coming out from behind those drums and blessing us with that voice. A gift to us all. Truly an angel. I was in high school when she passed, and while I didn't listen to the Carpenters all the time through the 70s, I felt that we had lost a friend in her when she passed. I was beyond sad to see her go. I remember just feeling like, oh, no, this just can't be. What a loss. What an angel.
She was the best singer of all time ,,, and I’m not sure if she knew it ,,, but now that she is in heaven,,, I hope she know that she was the best singer offfff alll time ! She was ,,, wow when I listen to her singing ,,, I’m in heaven myself !
Great, great lyrics by John Bettis! John stated that he and Karen shared a lot in common including their need to find that someone special to make their lives complete! And Richard's magnificent piano playing and Bob Messenger's excellent flute playing make "I Need To Be In Love" such a truly special, heartfelt song! You can understand why it was Karen's favorite and is John Bettis' favorite! I think this live performance of that song is actually better than the studio recorded version the Carpenters did for the "A Kind of Hush" album!
There are lots of people out there doing reactions, but yours are my favorite. You really listen and you seem to get her uncanny, original excellence. Thank you!
Your comments about her voice are spot on. I would also add 'honest'. As others have said, Karen didn't sing to impress, she didn't sing at you. She sang with sincerity, the music always came first. And in doing so, she made you feel as one with her.
I love your reaction dude. Love the Carpenters. Her voice is perfection. If you want to react another Carpenters gem, pls react "Love Me For What I Am" im sure you will love this. Thanks and Godbless.
Ah Karen, what a beautiful soul and voice. Karen makes it look effortless because she is so pure, pitch perfect and she has such range in her voice. There will never be another Karen Carpenter, but I am so thankful we still have the music she sang to listen to whenever we want to. The Carpenter's music always calms me and gives me a peaceful feeling. I hope more young people who don't know the Carpenter's music will listen and enjoy it.
This is only one example of the excellence of all the different genres of music we grew up with. Now can ya all understand why our bar is set so high.😊
Someone described her voice as "hauntingly beautiful". I agree.
A voice that can make a grown man cry.
Paul McCartney once said that Karen Carpenter had the "best female voice in the world. Melodic, tuneful and distinctive!". And he wasn't wrong!
Karen Carpenter is the only female vocalist whose voice can literally bring me to tears.

Technically perfect and sung with deep emotion. She really was the best ever.

Great reaction dude.......timeless....thanks for all the Carpenters reviews. Velvet....very well said
She's a heart jabber... ❤... How to make everyone within earshot somber up and water works.
I loved the Carpenters. This song sums up her life, IMHO.
Every time I hear her voice ,,, I get tears in my EYES !
When Karen Carpenter sings, it is therapy from above. A gift to us all and forever.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written...Karen is an angel
Warm. Soothing. Calming. SPIRITUAL.
My god she probably been still alive with your support. ,,, your love for her is written all over your face after this song
Karen was truly one of a kind. Every time you hear her sing it takes you to a place that no one else can take you. Thank you for your reaction because I realize you get it. I enjoyed watching you react to this exquisite person.
Karen Carpenter could have sang every princess song on every Disney soundtrack. She just had that voice.
Her voice was so lovely and touching.😊❤
Such a beautiful voice.
Beautiful soul😊
I grew up listening to the Carpenters. Karen had perfect pitch, which made her stand out over most other vocalists.
She was my top five female singers.❤😊
Thank you!
Salvo...olease do much more of her...
Her voice is perfection.
There another
Your comments about her voice are spot on.
Thats my favourite ….written by Tony Peluso their guitarist and Parma Pascal
it's simply pure "feelings" - at the end, you would have liked to hug her.. just to comfort her..❤
❤loved their music
Incomparable, indescribable, incredible Karen Carpenter! Her voice wraps you up in a warm blanket and takes you away to magical places.
The power of the Carpenters enough said rest in peace Karen Carpenter
Ah Karen, what a beautiful soul and voice. Karen makes it look effortless because she is so pure, pitch perfect and she has such range in her voice. There will never be another Karen Carpenter, but I am so thankful we still have the music she sang to listen to whenever we want to. The Carpenter's music always calms me and gives me a peaceful feeling. I hope more young people who don't know the Carpenter's music will listen and enjoy it.
This is only one example of the excellence of all the different genres of music we grew up with. Now can ya all understand why our bar is set so high.😊
