I watched Dan react to IGN's list of the ten best roguelites and just seeing a little FTL footage got me feeling the itch to dive back in to one of the genre's all-time classics. Check it out!

@@milesheffernan1644 FTL was one of the indie games that caused the indie boom. The indie game market was extremely small before a few great indie games gained traction on the internet and showed how even small studios could make incredible games.

Was gonna say this is a golden era for NL, but I realized that I, along with many people, have been saying that for years now.

Long time fan here! It was hilariously great how MALF had you run debatably the worst ship while you're still refamiliarizing yourself. There are other fussy or bad ships but Engi B stacks so much against you while also playing so *slowly*. TBH, you did pretty well all told. This is one of my all-time favorite games and I'm so hyped to see you play it again.
Trade offer: You receive a well-meant FTL effortpost, I receive pog. (I'm not sure if this will be seen, but hopefully, I only make this post because you seemed receptive to chat help anyway.) I am far from even an expert player, but I've got a small handful of Hard victories, including several more near-victories including Engi B.
Here are some general tips worth keeping mind:
By Sector 2/3, Shields at L2 and Engines at 2-3 is a fair play, if you're getting into Sec. 3 and don't yet have L2 Shields you're likely get blitzed. Sec. 4/5, L3 Shields can save you a lot of heartache, and L4/5 Engines around Sec. 4-5+ is good. Better Engines makes for a faster escape, means w/ other systems like Cloaking you can potentially explore a lot, run against the Rebel Fleet, Cloak through the ASB and (hopefully) come out minimally scathed.
L4 Shields is not a trap. Also, L5 Engines is a sweet spot. Quick math: L5 Engines is 25% Evade, if Pilot & Engines are manned that's 35%, if both are masters that's 25+10+10 instead of +5+5. L6 with two masters/gold takes it up to 48%, or a near-coin-flip for every single projectile. L4 Shields, if only two of the 3 1 damage Ions hit, takes you L3. If one of the Boss Lasers hits, you have 2 Shield with L3 recharging; you take zero hull damage from the 2 damage Boss Beam. This applies to a lot of others from Sec. 6/7 on, as well.
The above Shields/Engine talk gets fuzzier when Cloaking is involved, as it allows you to 'pre-charge' weapons for 5/10/15 seconds, or avoid obnoxious Missiles, OR allow you to let someone fire their weapons so that they become mistimed and subsequently you get a soft guarantee of no damage. Example: Rebel with Basic I (10s charge and 1 hit)/Burst Laser 1 (11s and 2 hits). L1-2 Shields take 2s to recharge at base, so if timed correctly you will get hit by the Basic or Burst I, then make it so that you get by the former, pause, hit by the latter. The same logic can be applied to Beam + Laser loadouts later on. This also happened when you hit the Weapons as you did during the Rebel Fighter battle at 10:28 and would have sealed it, if you hadn't invested in Shields prior.
For Engi B, Slug crewmates make Sensors irrelevant, which is scrap saved. Slugs also make for the best Pilot/Enginelords, since they can't be Mind Controlled. They allow you to micro much less.
When more or better weapons aren't in sight, upgrading Engines, especially for Engi B because it sucks, is really helpful. An early, energized, L2/3 or even 4 Engines (depending), can go a long way in stalling out victories on slower ships.
Scrap allowing (not forgoing a 'key' or timely upgrade) Engi are some of the best crew you can buy or otherwise come across (slavers, Engi Sectors, unspecified Peaceful Sectors). They have the widest amount of blue options, which can minimize/control RNG for better run tailoring. They also make great Door/Sensorlords since you don't want them ready to fight.
Scrap allowing, the Long-Ranged Scanners are a phenomenally economic purchase. Responsive and pre-emptive fight avoidance (e.g. ignoring hazards), safer navigation, allows you to avoid dead nodes and fight more ships, only 30 scrap.
There's more but I'm watching your video a second time for (some) crucial moments because you're fun anyway.
6:20 - L2 Shields was a smart play, especially since you're restricted to that one MALF, all while dealing with slower-charging Weapons (one reason I personally dislike Engi B).
20:01-20:54 - You really just got the near-exact worst possible start there, I feel like if Weapons had been attacked there would have been more chances for you to be whittled down if not lose outright due to your MALF not being healed up.
47:13-47:52, 52:36-53:42 - Your logic was sound but misapplied, as for extra assurance double Flak I and Heavy I would have brought you so much more safety. They fire dramatically faster, they're *lined up* (8s and 10s), and output a total of 7 shots allowing you to quickly overwhelm the enemy, all at 5 Weapon power. With other factors in play, that can be handily game-winning.
1:04:22 - Burst Laser 2 is one of the best items in the entire game. Fast, three shots, reasonable 2 power. Not that you could have reasonably worked it in but worth emphasizing.
1:37:33-1:37:59 - It's worth noting that even if you're at like 5 Fuel going into Sec. 8, that's still a non-issue considering you get: 10 fuel upon entrance, which alone can take you far enough; you can potentially buy fuel at Stores, and you really only need (from my memory) 5~8 on Sec. 8; you can get poggy gains from the repair nodes.
Also, if I may make ship suggestions: I feel like Kestrel C would be a good way of refamiliarizing with FTL, because it is strong and not very micro (but can be for strats). If/When (or if you already have?) you unlock Federation C, I feel like you would actually like its reckless playstyle a lot. It's pretty inherently zany. Federation A is also really flexible and good for getting used to things as long as you get another weapon early on. I gotta recommend Kestrel C the most though.
Again, if you somehow actually did read this silly long response: This is only because you seemed so actually fine with FTL tips from the VODs, and I know from having watched you for a decade that that's not always the case. So I hope this is both informative and not pressing any buttons, honest. :)

@@john_titor1 I definitely get that, pretty sad when one of the most effective ways of winning with it is sidestepping its conceit in the early-game. So many missed Healing Bursts, drives me mad. Or being beaten at the boarding game.

FTL is always appreciated :) brings back the good old days. Maybe this like taste of strategy could wet the palate for xcom on the horizon? Although might not fit into the current variety meta.

NL Tip: If you have to move off piloting, always move to weapons or shields, its a small boost to recharge time and worth it over time. I also leave the rooms that open to space always open to vacuum. Makes it faster to repel intruders. Keep it up, your runs are legendary.
Not to take anything away from NL but man those were some good rolls on fight rewards. He got an amazing amount of weapons, drones and subsystems to sell.
The defensive mind control buy without sensors was actually run saving throughout but especially at 50:10 when he had 4 intruders, broken doors, broken O2, and just an engi and anti-personelle drone
i've actually picked this game up again myself recently and i'm so glad someone is making content on it again, and even you of all people. LOVE IT!!
I love ftl, you're doing pretty good. Here's a tip though. If you're gonna play two defence drones (which I wouldn't recommend in the first place) you should stager powering them on so that they circle the ship at different parts. There's a better chance to deflect more rockets

Who the heck in chat was saying 4th level shields are a trap?? I've been pretty deep into the FTL meta and I've never heard anyone try and make that claim before
There are a lot of (dumb) people who swear by all engines instead of 4th shield. I mean, yes, economically, it's better to have some kind of balance, but 4th shield always shields. I've gotten hit with 95% dodge chance way too many times, so ~50 just isn't worth forgoing 4th shield.
That's a really good run. I'm pretty sure that's the hardest ship in the game.

@@mrkillerful1 I've beaten it with B, I haven't had a good C run yet. I'm also missing a win with Lanius B, but that's not really due to difficulty as much as I don't ever play it. Type A is so fun with Lanius that it makes B hard to choose.
@@ellpoyohlokoh I quite like Lanius B, it's great for the boarding strategy (teleporter+clone bay+mind control+Lanius remove air). It also has a pretty good gun.

NL still not using the kill strategy on the flagship hurts man, finishing off the missile guy so you can keep missiles offline is crucial

FTL really is up there with the all time greats, no doubt! Good run, almost had the dub!
With NL praising FTL so much, I'm surprised he's never played Convoy (to my knowledge.) There's quite a few similarities, but the combats tend to be more dynamic as you control multiple units and fight multiple units.
NL, if you're reading this, I highly recommend you try it out! It's a roguelike I bounce back to every now and again and _really_ enjoy.

With this ship, I like venting all the oxygen out of every room except healing, pilot and the one in-between as well as maybe a bait system. 1 door upgrade and boarding crews are screwed with that anti-personell drone and no air.

I just played the Engi ship A last night, super OP, got lucky with a hull repair drone, and an extra chain Ion weapon, just went around suppressing shields and oxygen on every ship, suffocated crews everywhere and had so much scrap that I upgraded literally everything before the final boss fight.
In fairness I was playing on Easy because I was just trying to unlock other ships that the game has just decided I never unlocked so RIP me I guess
