I keep seeing players on forums for darktide complaining that high level havoc can only be played with psyker and bubble shield. But I just got out of another successful run on level 35, no bubble shield! Staying together, playing a build you're confident in, and working as a team, trumps whatever the "meta builds" are. Every time. Haven't done level 40 yet though so maybe I'll be eating my words soon.
I completely agree, hard coordinating as a 4 stack has always been my favorite and most fun way to play as well. My roots are in the Vermintide 2 modded tournament era where your gear mattered to an extent, but how you played, and how well you played as a team were the REAL determining factors in success. Most people have not had/dedicated the time to reach their personal skill ceiling and just complain about external factors as the reason for their failure instead of looking inward. They are getting stomped even if they have good gear/meta gear. It just so happens that auric does not require you to play well' to win. Havok does.
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to play in a full pre-made team with voice chat. And that's what the meta is good for: decent all-rounder builds which prove useful no matter what bag of noobs you get queued with, even if you're not a god who can true solo with a meme build. It's not as fun, so I do have 11 other loadouts per character to play lower level missions or when I don't care about winning that much, but I believe it is desirable for players to have one meta loadout per character to which one can switch when inevitably finding oneself in a lobby with 3 level 20 ogryns waiting for a HISTG Damnation Rolling Steel. Yes, Havoc requires the use of party finder, so it is a bit different in that regard, but recently finding decent players has been quite problematic, at least in my region and timezone. I can either accept all requests as quick as possible or I can inspect them carefully and never get anyone to join because someone else accepts their request first. I used to hate metas in most games, but somehow in Darktide it doesn't bother me. Probably because it allows quite a lot of flexibility so you don't have to copy other players' builds 1:1, you can just observe what works and make your own variation with a slight twist to adjust it towards your playstyle.
I've always been an advocate for 'playing however you want' regardless of whether or not I find it fun. people should be not be criticized for having fun. You want to play meta? Go ahead. You want to play meme? Go ahead. You want to carry in sedition difficulty with overpowered gear? Go ahead. Games are made to be fun. When people start saying things like, 'you cant play this because its bad' or 'you cant play that because its good', and they get more joy out of complaining about other people and how they play, than actually playing the game, that's when I get all philosophical and am like, 'brother take the log out of your own eye before trying to take the thorn out of mine'. I post these runs on youtube not because I'm trying to tell people how to play. I post them as inspiration for the people that WANT to dedicate effort into getting better, and for the people that don't have the time and just want to see what is possible.
@tuesss That thinking is the very antithesis of being good. So calling someone else a noob is showing you that you have no mirrors in you house. If people focused on playing their role instead of just Ine Shotting everything then more builds would be viable....
Was it your first attempt, or did you retry multiple times before getting lucky? Including that respawn location... I don't know if the game hates me or what, but yesterday I was playing a low-level Havoc with a lower-level friend and it was crazy, we even got 5-6 snipers at once at some point (from 3 different sides during a semi-open-area objective). Maybe it's because we play with random people who tend to wander off... We did win, but I can't imagine doing the same at Havoc 40 with that encounter intensity. Another game, non-Havoc one with lights out, somehow I died and respawned right next to a DH (around 8 m) and a lot of gunners, in total darkness. In any case, this is very impressive still, as even with tons of luck I seriously doubt I could do it myself at my current skill level and until now I didn't even consider trying Havoc 30+ as ogryn.
Actually, thinking about it now, there is probably no other place to respawn at on that map before the final objective. I haven't died there myself yet so I thought it was lucky but I guess it's quite deterministic in this case.
We probably tried this around 10 times over the course of a week, including runs with combine's internet having more rng than a gatcha game XD. Most of those runs were us experimenting with different builds and getting used to Ogryn playstyle/team tactics etc. Since none of us are Ogryn mains(me especially), there was a lot of learning to be had. I wouldn't say our rng was particularly good this game either, we had multiple very open sections that were just packed full of gunners/shooters/reapers but we know how to handle them as a team. We had triple boss in the section around 12:30 but we played slow and limited map progress to avoid having to fight all of them at once. As for respawns, they usually are deterministic and are based on map progress of the farther forward player, if you know where the respawn locations are you can kind of manipulate where someone ends up. we were a little unfamiliar with this map and you can hear them discussing when i died at 47:32 whether or not they should back up more before i respawn to get an easier rez. They opted not to back up too much because of the tactical consequences of giving up the choke point and cover to the gunners. Nearly all events have respawns in them or before them so worst case they would just pick me up first thing in final event. Fortunately there was another spawn location at the top of the stairs and since they backed up to behind the choke point after i died, i didn't spawn in event.(all that being said, sometimes you do just get absolutely fucked and spawn way farther than you should because Fatshark XD)
playing with 4 ogryns feels very different than playing compare to a single ogryn on the team. ogryn is actually very good at horde clear and elites, the worst parts is really just shooters and gunners. its not impossible, its not hard, it just doesn't feel good to play. thats really why psyker bubble is so popular, it just feels better to play. good team mates/being a good player is way more important than the class
"good team mates/being a good player is way more important than the class" - This is exactly what we're trying to prove. people tend to blame external factors for their failures, not just in gaming, its human nature to protect one's ego from the criticism of your own mind. Of course you cant just hold w into 40 gunners and expect to live like you can in auric, but a coordinated strike between all 4 members, covering each others backs, and engaging with good mechanics, makes fighting mass guns almost easier than mass melee.
"Feeling good to play" is subjective. Feel is in the front of that statement for a reason. If you enjoy Ogryn or whatever build you like then master it and you'll be just fine.
2 things: Firstly, you fucking madman, how much of your lifetime did you dedicate to this? Secondly, what program are you using to record and display your inputs, I’d like to know for future reference if I make more videos.
1. If I had to guess, id say this took us ~10 attempts spread over a week or so. 2. Its called NohBoard, I edited a default template to display the keys I wanted. There are tons of RUclips tutorials on how to set it up.
@ Thank you for replying. That’s less attempts than I expected, but more time than I thought it would take, I expected it to have taken a day or two of pure attempts. Also, thanks for the application name. Very cool.
That little bob and weave on those pox hounds @18:38 was beautiful! Poetry in motion.
This video proves that Fatshark needs to nerf Ogryn more.
He's so OP 🙃

i don't generally run bottom keystone because i use shield, but FNP to mitigate ranged chip is a very good idea if you are shieldless. nice work.

Yeah. Because they are bad. Good Movement and decision making is all you need. People abuse Meta in PVE games to make up for their own lack of skill.
