if your doing the other hull 2 sticks of wood and a bolt with a wing nut thru the center would make a clamp. A long bolt so you have a handhold and not push it back thru when installing the other side.
That's What plans are for. There is always a better way to do things .I do wonder sometimes how quickly I could build stuff if I didn't change things.Rossco.
For clamping a through hull / bulkhead with a hollow center, use two wood blocks with a hole in them, a pair of fender washers and a bolt with a wingnut. In this case, 175mm x 50mm x 20ishmm boards, M8 hole, M8 bolt, washers, nut, etc. The longer the bolt, the easier you can feed it through like a toggle bolt. Tighten down, squish it together, then you are all set!

Might want to add a fiddle on the aft end of that new bit of flooring to keep anything dropped from rolling into the bilge...And if you find any large amounts of water in the crash bulkhead, even if you repair the leak at sea, you might have trouble draining it due to 'liquid lock'. A small vent valve at the top will solve that easily...
Hey Mike. The step down now has a solid fiam core stair tread riser glassed to make the step structural and enclosed and complete bracing underneath.I will install some type of valve to relieve pressure in crash bulkhead as that is a great idea and allow water lock to be eliminated.Cheers Buddy.Ross
Perhaps you are correct.I di like s good project.Good to know I can at least check the potential ingress of water.Common in a number of modern cats now. Cheers Ross
I not sure if your boat/dream is going into survey, I doubt the pipe data facing up / visable to prove it is pressure rated. Probably to late for this application but for future pipework.

You've been talking about the crash compartment and bulkhead for some time now. You're concerned about draining condensation from the space which makes sense but if the space is truly airtight, is pressure not a problem as well? It seems that with temp changes, the pressure could get pretty high or low, causing stresses in the structure. Thanks for the great channel. I look forward to the next installment every week.
I imagine pressure is a problem and some type of relief valve would definately required.I can see a small waterproof hatch in the top of the bulkhead that can be opened or vented to relief such s build up.It would also ensure waterlock doesnt occur when draining a breached compartment.Cheers Ross
Lots of Xmas wishes family etc. Thats nice. What about the crash bulkhead drain? Personally I don't get it. That's a huge pipe for condensation and you would never get anything like you'd need to drain. Secondly if you did unfortunately break the hull, you can't drain water while the vessels in the water. And once up and out of the water it will self drain from cracks in the hull and the cutting away of damaged area for repairs. Beats me but your enjoying it while I'm exhausted watching.😂
Gidday Marc.I have as couple of Maton Acoustic cutaways and Ellen has a Telecaster and a beautiful Lag Acoustic .Sammo another Maton guitar.Love my guitars buddy.Rossco
I don't understand the purpose of the ball valve. Why not let any water that might appear just flow into the bilge where it will be automatically be pumped out. How will you know if there is water in the crash bulkhead?
Hi Ross, I've started to follow and have enjoyed at least 4 hours of your videos. The one big question I have is what do you think your expected cost overall to get this yacht on the water would be, less the moulds of course.....just curious as buying vs building has always been an influencer for me. Being an ex-boat builder myself (steel cruisers only) I am always fascinated about other options as I plan to retire in a few years and sail the world. Having that plan, a steel sailing cat between 42-48 foot is not a practical idea so I'm just trying to make an educated guess as to what medium I will build in even before I have a design. Just keen to find out what your best guess will be for this 40 footer...
Hey Tim.I am aiming at the very most to hit 300k Australian dollars fully rigged with motors electrics, safety,in survey and sails. This is still realistic but my wages are not included in that.Cheers buddy. Thanks for watching and commenting.Ross.
Poor old Rupert. He is indeed a mess.My sister Chrissy's old dog.Eats everything and has survived some pretty odd meals including kangaroos, bags of horse manure and is now an anxious old 13year old.Sad year ahead for many of the family's dogs.Cheers .Ross
I reckon it will get all but the last couple of drops. It is quite a steep incline so as thimble full of water would be about the remnant if emptied.Cheers buddy.aThanks for keeping up to date.Ross
I could indeed full this void with 2 part foam but the issue is if ever there is a breach the fiam tends to always absorb water which would lead to problems further down the track.I am hsppy with a simple air void whuch ca n be easily cleaned and repaired if required without the nightmare of removing foam to repair a collision damage.Regards Ross
Does a void in the fiberglass hull need to be vented? I work on aircraft and I have seen wings collapse when the tank was being pumped but the vents were stopped. It can be catastrophic damage. I don't know if it would be like that for your hull.
I imagine pressure is a problem and some type of relief valve would definately required.I can see a small waterproof hatch in the top of the bulkhead that can be opened or vented to relief such a build up.It would also ensure waterlock doesnt occur when draining a breached compartment.Cheers Ross
It’s probably too late now but do yourself a favour and get rid of those valves.they tend to get very stiff and eventually seize up. I’ve just replaced 42 of them in an aquaculture setting and didn’t enjoy it,there are black pe ones( with blue handles) that are far superior pressure rated as well and best part they aren’t that much dearer - can get them at irrigation stores plumbing stores etc
Yes indeed. They are to be able to be inspected and can have access waterproof hatches and pressure rated drains as long as they are pressure tested and are air and water tight.Cheers Ross
Definately not.Main bulkhead areas only. There are now many sectional bulkheads also along the hull further reinforcing the monocoque structure. They are also above spec with extra laminate and 20mm foam h80 increased from 10mm to further increase strength.Cheers Ross
Whilst not required it is common practice to have some access through either a certified watertight hatch or drain as often these compartments suffer leakage unbeknownst to the owner. This will allow some method of checking whilst in the water to determine whether leakage is occurring with the ability to shut off flow quickly and enact repair and or drainage.I believe it has merit as all compartments sealed or not will encounter condensation problems as well.Sll the best .Thanks for bringing this up.

If you glued a 90 deg elbow down you could vac out 99% of any water that enters the bulk head
I should have figured you for a guitar player....... Seems we have a good bit in common. What guitars do you have?
Gidday Marc.I have as couple of Maton Acoustic cutaways and Ellen has a Telecaster and a beautiful Lag Acoustic
.Sammo another Maton guitar.Love my guitars buddy.Rossco

Maton makes some beautiful instruments..... Excellent quality... Looking forward to your next episode... ! 😜
Just turned 60 and wondering if you will get this in the water before I kick the bucket? Just kidding thanks for sharing a great video..
I think you will be alright .Truly.
I don't understand the purpose of the ball valve. Why not let any water that might appear just flow into the bilge where it will be automatically be pumped out. How will you know if there is water in the crash bulkhead?
It's a crash bulkhead! If you crash into something, the bulkhead flouds and not the boat. You open the valve a little bit to check for a leak.
That ball valve will fail, cheap but won't last. You need a truck union ball valve that is at least serviceable. Jim
No way to clamp? two large washers or plywood and a bolt/nut, you have a clamp.
ROFL How many Kilo's did the dogs add on. The Choc Lab cracked me up. She is as much a beggar as my Labs are.
You weren't tempted to glue an elbow on the end to get it right down?
(sorry if that seems like a good idea after it's all been fixed in place)
I reckon it will get all but the last couple of drops. It is quite a steep incline so as thimble full of water would be about the remnant if emptied.Cheers buddy.aThanks for keeping up to date.Ross
Stupid question from a non-sailor - could you fill those crash bulkheads with closed cell urethane foam and void the space of air for condensation?
Yes that is exactly what I mean. Thank you,
It’s probably too late now but do yourself a favour and get rid of those valves.they tend to get very stiff and eventually seize up. I’ve just replaced 42 of them in an aquaculture setting and didn’t enjoy it,there are black pe ones( with blue handles) that are far superior pressure rated as well and best part they aren’t that much dearer - can get them at irrigation stores plumbing stores etc
That is great advice and I will certainly look into it.Cheers Ross
Could you just have filled the space in there with a closed cell expanding foam?
I could indeed full this void with 2 part foam but the issue is if ever there is a breach the fiam tends to always absorb water which would lead to problems further down the track.I am hsppy with a simple air void whuch ca n be easily cleaned and repaired if required without the nightmare of removing foam to repair a collision damage.Regards Ross
Aren't crash bulkheads meant to be water tight?
Yes indeed. They are to be able to be inspected and can have access waterproof hatches and pressure rated drains as long as they are pressure tested and are air and water tight.Cheers Ross
I my comment it should read tru union ball valve made by spears plastic
Thanks Jim I will definately look into it.
I would not use that bulkhead as a lift or block point
Definately not.Main bulkhead areas only. There are now many sectional bulkheads also along the hull further reinforcing the monocoque structure. They are also above spec with extra laminate and 20mm foam h80 increased from 10mm to further increase strength.Cheers Ross
I do not see the sense of you putting these in.If you have a leak, you have to haul out.this is when you need to drain any water. And do any repair.
