You can use that gap as a raceway! If you have any scrap cedar, I'd trim out the fan and cover up the white plastic fan trim , you know, as one of those "never done with the build" projects. Excellent build!
Happy to have come across your videos Joel. We just sold our travel trailer and plan on converting our little cargo trailer into something we can use for camping. Thanks for the tips! Especially nice that you’re also from Northern ON.

Thank you! I looked into installing a dimmer switch but I couldn't find one for under $60. Dimmable lights would of been a nice touch but I figured that if I wanted less light I could just turn on the light at the kitchen (yet to be installed).
Nice work, good craftsmanship. One question... Why build such a nice, residential type set-up if it's not tall enough to stand up in. Seems like a big quality of life compromise that could be easily avoided.
Hi, great question. I bought the trailer used and this is what I was able to find. I like to think of it as a hybrid between a tear drop and camper. I can sit up comfortably which is good enough for me!
Love your videos! Im about to put my ceiling in. It says to let wood acclimate for 72 hours. Did you? I get it for indoor room, but these trailers see all kinds of temps/climates.
I opened the boxes and let them air out for a few days before installing. Made sure to glue and nail them when installing to minimize any movement. Thanks for watching!!
There's no reason for it to get moldy. Using a rigid XPS foam board that is moisture resistant won't be susceptible to mold. Has to be closed cell foam, not open EPS.
I've often wondered if there is a sound leak and/or R-value loss through the fan area. Did you find this was the case? Really appreciated the vid. Thanks.
I haven't done any technical analysis of this but I am sure this is true. The same goes for windows, doors, vents, etc... They are a weakness in the envelope. Some air exchange is always necessary though and I'm sure these "weaknesses" help with that in the end. Thank you for watching!
Looks fantastic - I’m building out a CTC right now and need to find the right ceiling lights that are DC hardwired. All the puck lights I see on Amazon plug into a 120v outlet. Any way you could share a link to the lights you used or point me in the right direction?
Someone may have already asked, but how did you know where to put the wooden strapping once you put the second layer of insulation up? I didn't notice you checking a mark or anything. Perhaps it was the frame speed and I simply missed it? Also what type/size screws did you use? I assume you were screwing into the metal ribs of the roof frame.
Hey thanks for asking. The first layer of strapping was installed perpendicular to the metal roof ribs. I put the second layer of strapping at 16" on center. Self tapping screws into the metal beams and 3/4" wood screws to fasten the second layer to the first layer. Thanks for watching!!

I was in a hurry back in 2019. Now I am doing many many upgrades and redoing stuff. The ceiling is one of those things. Last question. Why did you use 2 sets of ceiling strapping?
Aroma cedar planks, 1/4" thick. Nailed and glued. Extra strapping to give space to add insulation to stop thermal bridging. Extra layer of strapping is so that you can mount the cedar planks at 16" on centre.
@@JoelTremblayCA Thank you very much for the reply. I see they sell boxes of the cedar planking at Home Depot. Unfortunately it is not all 48" long. It comes various lengths. Did you find this a problem? If I do this then I will cover the steel beams with sheets of 1/2" foam board so they do not touch the cedar. Screws can just pass through the foam into the strapping. The reason is the thermal bridging. My walls are terrible for this. The steel studs just pass the heat straight through the wood sheathing and into the room. Yup!! when I finish my ceiling I just stood in my trailer for 30 minutes sniffing 😄 I've looked at a lot of cargo trailer builds on RUclips and haven't seen any ceilings like ours. Now watch...cedar ceilings is going to become the new trend for cargo trailers 🙂
Joel, we’re you using 18 gauge 3/4 inch finishing nails? The heads are not obvious everywhere? I was thinking of using the clips used for tongue and groove but brad nailer would be so much quicker.
What do you think about rockwool for insultating the roof and walls 1feet from the ground up and styrofoam for the bottom and floor? I've seen people using urethane, but I believe it's toxic?
I'd be hesitant to put anything that will absorb moisture. Rigid XPS insulation is moisture resistant. The foam boards are the way to go in my opinion.
