  • In this episode, I continue my fishing journey targeting sea trout in coastal waters. I enjoy using the bombarda catching sea trout with fly patterns so I thought I would take it to the next level. This is my first ever coastal fly fishing episode and hope to do much more in the near future.
    Thanks for watching.

Great vid, congrats on the catch. A few tips from a Dane, where we have been Coastal fly Fishing for seatrout since the 70’s . A linetray is an absolute must, and the ones designed here, are also the best, check out “baskette” or “Sondergaard Ecoastal”. If you Would go for gear for that kind Of Fishing, the average is a fast 6 weight, some use a 7. Recomended Lines are Scientific anglers Volantis, Rio outbound short (the one i use), Rio Coastal seatrout. The outbound short is by far, the easiest to cast. Leaders are standard 9’ flourocarbon 0.30 with a 0.25’ish tippet. Again, congrats, it is very addictive 😉

Nice one thats a beautiful fish! best advice I can give you is slow your back cast down a little give the line time to move behind you before casting forward and also get the fish on the reel as soon as you can and you can let the reel do the work its so much easier to play a fish on the reel rather than by hand lining! Another great production and another magnificent beast there Doug, well done all round, you are killing it lately. I had a couple of years single mindedly devoted to fly fishing and when it all comes together it can be truly sublime and very effective, but when it’s bad, it’s the pits. I pretty much gave up on it, the odd foray, but yesterday we drove half the day and bought a secondhand fly tying kit so I can make some clousers and tube flies which are ridiculously expensive here in Oz. More time spent in the shed messing about with gear is never a bad thing anyways.

The only comment I would add is, if you are keeping on with the fly rod, consider dropping down to a 7# outfit. It will be much more comfortable to use for extended periods and more than capable of casting the sandeel pattern flies. Best of luck for the future.

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing A lot more choice for the modern angler these days. My great uncle who taught me to fish when I was a young child used his split cane fly rod for everything on the river. Small fixed spool reel on it and a small wine cork for a float. Wore a suit, shirt and tie every day even when he was fishing and kept all his terminal tackle in his pockets. Caught stacks of trout in the local river. Very happy and vivid memories for me 50 odd years ago. I use a 7# outfit for sea trout which works well for me. Only step up to 8# for pollack off the rocks. An ordinary reservoir rod and cheapish reel does the best...rinse off after use as I would normally after sea water exposure....it has lasted well. Using a ordinary floating line with sink tip which gets rinsed off too without problems. I never bother with tapered leaders for the salt...just fluorocarbon straight through...generally about a foot or so longer than rod to try to minimise tangles when it's windy. Loving the channel....keep up the good work.

I use a 6 wt 9ft Sage rod which has a very stiff action loaded with a floating 7 wt Loop shooting taper line for bass and it works really well in moderate wind conditions. I had one about 2lb self release this morning, which I didn't mind because I saw it close and to me the success is in finding and getting one to take in the first place.
Can I ask what you do when you see a follow?
I had a big fish follow right to my feet a couple of days ago, nipped at the lure and away. Would you do a stop, speed up or just pretend you haven't seen it and carry on as normal like I do haha.

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  Год назад +1

Thanks Daz, it was a happy day all round. Well I’ve not had the experience of many follows with the fly rod but certainly with the bombarda if in close I speed up a bit. The last video, you can’t really see it on small screen, even though I tried to zoom in on the take. The fish was following and did a u turn to get the fly and you could just make out the slight bow wave/bulge on the surface i reeled in with a bit of pace until it smashed it. I’ve had a few like that, approaching shallow water, it’s like the point of no return the fish either has a go or looses it’s pray to the cover of rocks and weed. That’s my theory anyway.

    beautiful Douglas
good to see that you catch them that way too I've done it once but I'm not a star at it I find fishing with the bombarda just a bit easier and you have a longer range than with the fly I think although I you can see the streamer moving quite a distance away from you but as a question I can see that you strip the line fairly quickly or does it just seem that way. I think the bombarda is slowing down or is that a hoax?
but all in all beautiful to look at and a nice result tight lines for next time

Another great watch! I agree with you that catching one with traditional fly gear is the ultimate and although I catch loads of mullet on Mepps spinners tipped with ragworm nothing beats the thrill of taking them on traditional fly gear. On another, but related subject I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the benefits or otherwise of using the Bombarda method with the Bombarda being fixed and not able to slide freely. The rational given is that with a sliding Bombarda a lot of slack line is created which can seriously impact bite detection. Any thoughts?

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing

I will try locking the bombarda in place on my next session, a tight fitting line stop should do the trick. Stay tuned I’ll use it in my next video, if I catch a fish😂 Thanks again Douglas

Sand eel pattern for me but anything that looks like small bait fish. I must admit, most of the sea trout that I caught using a fly has been with the bombarda.

We were up on Fri 19th there at rhu from 6 am to 9.30 am. Low tidevthis time. Tried bombarda and sand eel fly and a couple of different spinners. Both of us not a touch yet again. Can't see what were doing wrong but it's getting disheartening. We are both skilled and experienced river fishermen trout wise. I've caught and was in the paper for it, sea trout in other rivers but I seem to have lost the touch or whatever is needed

Hi Fraser, thanks for the update, it’s always appreciated mate. Blanking is not uncommon, you can throw everything at them and it can be frustrating especially if they have shown themselves. If I know they are there I usually give the area a bit of a rest and try different lures or flies, which I’m sure you do with your experience but as you know you can’t make them feed, it happens to the best of us. Tight lines gents, I’ve got my fingers crossed for you.

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing we will still try, it's a lovely place and just a morning there works wonders for the mind and soul. We work together as chefs so we need to get back to kilmarnock for 11 to start so that's why it's always early morning just now but high summer it'll be nights after 9.30pm which is the deadliest we can get there after work. I'll keep you posted as to our success or failures lol tight lines, I look forward to more of your vids. Ps - I wrote that while disheartened but I'm ready and full of confidence that it will work one day. I'm going to purchase a couple of Tobies and use the Scandinavian style of having a fly one the line a foot and a half from the spinner so it looks like the spinner is chasing the fly- this can induce a take as the sea trout or bass sees it as competition for food AND prey/food and is more likely to engage attack mode. That's the theory anyway. I'll do this not with a dropper but with the fly "inline" with the line tied to the bend of the fly hook then directly to the spinner no droppers- no tangles. Still using a swivel in the set up though

@@fraser5754 thanks again for the feedback, totally agree with the theory of fish feeding encourages other fish to feed and using a teaser can often make a huge difference. Tight lines to you both👍🎣

Treat yourself to a line tray, makes much easier work of the hanging line in the water. Have a look at the channel "Flyfishingbyrobert".

Thanks G, I do love the bombarda but I do like new challenges too. It’s probably the reason I like so many methods. For me it’s not always about catching, although that is the best outcome in any fishing, I just like verity. Appreciate your comments as always buddy, tight lines.

Me and my brother were watching one of your sea trout videos last week and my brother thought the surroundings looked like Red Castle near North Keswick, Inverness.
I only started fishing for sea trout from the bank last year at Alturlie, Culloden. I blanked every time. The sea trout there used to be plentiful 20 years ago with fish jumping all the time, but there doesn't seem to be much there now😪

@@allanscobbie4101 thanks for supporting the channel with watching the videos. Sadly many fisheries have experienced declining numbers of game fish around our coast due to a multitude of factors.
