The two-party system is an inherent consequence of your first-past-the-post system. Here in Denmark, any party that gets more than 2% of the national vote gets representation in parliament. It’s then up to those parties to agree on a prime minister. EDIT: … and 4-5% in Sweden and Germany. The salient point is that it isn’t “winner-takes-all” like the US, where all votes in a given area goes to the candidate with the most votes. If you’re a republican in California or a democrat in Texas your vote is basically erased.
As an American, I totally agree...the votes of everyone who didn't win are basically erased (Except in a few of the 50 states). Proportional and ranked choice voting have been my preferences since I learned of them in the early 00's (Born '85), but it's not the politicians or beauracrats that control this country, it's the business interests...how else could the most powerful country in the world sell off it's industrial base to China, India, Bangladesh, ect. ??? Because the people who own this country don't care about this country...in the words of Howard Beale from the 1976 movie, Network, "There are no countries, only corporations and the international transfer of dollars..."
In The Netherlands, it's based on the person receiving the votes. The amount of seats (which is 150) is divided between the amount of eligible voters (which is around 10 million), and you vote for a person representing a party, whichever party that may be. Any votes that exceed the threshold for a seat in the house, get distributed among the other people on the party list. And fun fact: you don't even need to be a member of that party to represent that party. The PVV has the biggest share in the house with 38 seats right now, but has only one member: Geert Wilders. Still, every decision has to be approved with a majority by our house of representatives (Tweede Kamer), and then gets sent to our senate (Eerste Kamer) for approval or dismissal. For constitutional changes it's about 65% of the house that needs to agree. However, our senate can only vote on the decision as it's presented to them, they cannot change it. And the "Eerste Kamer" is elected indirectly through our regional elections: the results of our provincial elections (similar to state elections) determine who is represented in the senate. And to sign something into law, both the king and the minister representing the department regarding the new law need to sign the document, but the king has no influence on the proposal itself either, just like our senate. That's why we're officially a "constitutional monarchy", but are considered a full democracy, because all decisions derive directly from the people we elect.
Girl, PREACH. I've always said that one of the biggest issues in modern politics is that people don't vote FOR anybody anymore. They vote AGAINST them.
I'm not defending the whole voting shtick cause it's a joke, but plenty of people voted for Trump cause they understand him and like him and know he was the smart choice.
@ItApproaches well, people are entitled to their own opinions and choices. Our votes still mean next to nothing, and no matter who gets put in office, it also rarely matters. These two parties have had control of the country since its inception, and this is where we're at. The only difference between the dems and pubs are that ones red and the other is blue. Both parties, regardless of who the president is, are going to just continue lying to us, exploiting us, and pitting us against each other so we stay too busy to take the power back from them.
Or they just vote for their party. People these days can't even comprehend voting for someone in the other party anymore. When I was first voting (in the early 90s) and all the way up to 2020's election, I had no problem voting for someone who wasn't a Democrat. Now, once we got past 2020, I'm sorry but down here in Florida there was no one other than Democrat's I'd ever vote for lol because wow. And nationally, well come on. And while George was almost always spot on - the whole not voting thing - is why Trump will be back in office in January this time. near 15 million Democrats decided not to vote this go round, so just think about that. But George is still mostly right lol
@@ItApproaches Hell yea! If you hate Ns and WBs and any other dark skinned people, Trump was definitely the smart choice. Now let's all stand by and watch our democracy collapse, bc of pure, vile hatred. This is about to get fun. And a woman NOT voting for the first woman president absolutely boggles my mind. Talk about going against progressiveness... Sheeeeesh. This country 💯% deserves what's coming.
@@EdenMB-w3xyes. As a FORMER democrat (1980-2012) my life was so much better especially financially under Trump. As a retiree in mid 2020 the biden/harris administration just about bankrupted many of us.
@@joececere4918It baffles me how anyone can live so long and be dumb enough to think that the country falls apart at the end of a president’s term but people believe it’s the following administration’s fault. You’re not a “former Democrat”, you’re just selfish and dumb.
Actually, here in Germany over the last months we had three cases of small towns who elected a mayor who was not on the ballot. One of them even accepted the office. Maybe it's indeed a good idea to start a movement, at least on a more regional level.
George would say the exact same things now as he did then, he was an educator as well as a comedian, he made u laugh yes but he also highlighted things that a lot of people probably never knew about or just ignored out of convenience
some may argue its people who vote like you that keep us where we are with politics in america. some people, not necessarily me, but some. food for thought.
One thing George doesn't quite get right here. People who voted for one candidate have every right to complain about what a candidate they didn't vote for does. But the two party system does suck. And voting against the opposing candidate is what a lot of people do now. I did it in voting for Kamala. I do think Kamala would be a better president than Trump, and I even think she'd be a better president than Biden, but I don't think she'd be a good president. I don't think she'd actually move the country forward, because no president has ever done that. We've taken monumental steps forward as a society, but the presidents either keep things how they are, or make things how they were. They never move forward. They never fight for change or for growth. And, unfortunately, when one candidate is continuously spewing hateful rhetoric and lying about every single god damn thing except for the things he's adamant about doing, like having the biggest MASS DEPORTATION IN AMERICAN HISTORY including ssylum seekers (who came into the US legally, showing he doesn't actually care about illegal immigration but immigration as a whole), then yeah, I feel if my only options are people who won't be elected because nobody votes for them (and they suck), someone who keep the country relatively the same, and a fascist, I'm voting for someone who will keep the country relatively the same. I don't take pride in it at ALL. And I don't take pride in the results of the election. But I don't want be complicit in the destruction of our country, either. Honestly, though, I hate American citizens. I hate American voters. They never care about policy or facts or statistics, only their feelings. Which makes them in turn make terrible decisions. Edit: Also, as for my feelings on the election of Trump for a second term... I am... Cautiously pessimistic. I don't think he'll do anything to help the country or its citizens. I hope I'm wrong. I hope he proves me wrong. But I don't think he will. And at the very least, if he DOES fuck the country over, maybe it'll force people to see reason. Then again, I bet some people would foam at the mouth with joy watching him fuck the country over, so... Maybe not. People STILL believe the 2020 election was rigged and there wasn't an insurrection on Jan. 6, despite the fact that Donal Trump has openly admitted to this being his first time winning the popular vote (which is quite the admission for a narcissist). Oh, and I just learned recently that the event most people confuse with Jan. 6 as a peaceful protest and compare it to a tour was actually a DIFFERENT protest, about 8 months earlier, in the stae of Michigan, where people did protest and WERE let into the capitol building, and nobody was hurt. But Jan. 6 was still a violent protest with several deaths and injuries and many millions of dollars worth of damage of the US capitol building in Washington DC. But, uh, yeah... Cautiously pessimistic.
Everyone has the right to complain, some knew better beforehand, others knew better afterwards.

You should look into how electoral systems work in European nations, which have multiparty systems. You might be surprised to find out how bad the American democratic system actually is. For example, here in Finland, national registry sends a reminder that there is going to be an election and where I can vote. I do not need to register as I am a citizen and all citizens are allowed to vote. I can vote early or on the election day and all I need to do it is show my ID. In and out in a few minutes, no fuss or confusion. Also, campaing season is just a couple of weeks, because that is enough. You vote a canditate, but your vote goes to the canditate's party. Seats are distributed among diffetent parties proportionally according to their shares of votes. Each party then fills the seats in the order of which canditate got most votes.
@@cyrielwollring4622what you are saying is: the US are outdated and need to get back in time. The registry is basically the census - every citizen of age gets an ID and can vote.
Two party system or not, in the modt important election in US history pitting democracy against authoritarian rule, you voted against saving democracy. Very good. Now your child will never know the America that you, your parents, maybe grandparents knew. They will live in an autocracy...or worse. You'll have yourself to blame for the darkness coming. Great way to start parenting.
It's not a mentality that makes only two parties relevant. It's simple match. In a winner-take-all system, where 51% of votes is the same as 100% of votes, any potential third party will either be subsumed by the two primary choices, or the upstart party will take over one of the two incumbent parties. We've witnessed the latter take place over the last 16 years, where the 'MAGA Party', which has its roots in the Tea Party wing of Republicans, has now completely taken over the Republican party.
here in the uk if you do not vote it goes to the winner , not sure if it is the same in usa ,but you are officially voting even if you do not vote ,so always vote the person who you think who not going to get in.
I don't think you are correct about that at all. If you don't vote, there is no vote for you. That is how we work, not willy nilly awarding non-votes to winners. That simply doesn't make any sense whatsoever. If a candidate has won from real votes, why would they need to add non-votes which could be a very suspicious act for no gain at all? They've already won. You are officially still on the voting rolls even if you don't cast your vote, but they most certainly don't vote on your behalf. Whoever told you that was, at best, pulling your leg.
In the U.S , U.K and Canada there needs to be a one issue 'Change the Voting Procedure' Party. Change it one of the Proportional Voting methods. In order to get elected the party needs to promise to *just* change the voting method and then resign. It must not do anything else in order not to worry voters of all political coordinates.
When George says your country it's because he proclaimed to have become a bystander in America. It's in a video where he said when you're born into this World you're born into the freak show and if you're born in America you get a front row seat! The title of the 4:18 video is "When you are born in this world, you are given a ticket to the Freak Show - George Carlin"
React to Carlins "Saving the planet", it is my favourite one because it so explains how deep his understanding of everything goes andhow much knowledge he has and how much thought he puts into things
In Sweden, where I'm from, we have the option of a "blank vote" i.e.handing in a blank piece of paper in your envelope (everything is done by hand here, no voting machines). I think this is a good option if you can't support a specific party, but the people who don't vote sound a lot like Carlin here as well: "It doesn't matter" "it won't change anything" "it's going to count as an invalid vote anyway" "I'm only legitimizing the established parties". I say if you want democracy (the least bad option ever tried), it's your civic duty to take an hour or two of your time (national and EU elections is separate) roughly each half decade to vote. It's a miniscule sacrifice to make to show your fellow citizens, your leaders and the world that you care and are paying attention.
Hi Heidi, great reaction to one of George Carlin's best bits. But as good as this one is, his 2 GOAT bits are 'The Death Penalty (including Capital Punishment) & 'Four Groups That Gotta Go' - please react to those next, George is on top form as ever performing those and they are hilarious! George Carlin is the best!
We are so self destructive. And the crazyness is about to start. It is ok, we need to feel the pain of what was just voted into office. We do not remember the pain of what is comming. Reminder on its way.
We have 15 factions/parties here in the Netherlands, in those factions there are various people who, they say, have knowledge of matters such as the environment, housing, finances etc. etc. If we can vote we can choose from 150 people (of all factions added together).....a tiny bit more than 2 like the USA 😅. If we do NOT vote our votes do NOT go to another party but are lost.
Great reaction. Carlin always brings an interesting view. 🤣 We have 11 parties in Denmark at this time. That's 'interesting' too.... - But atleast, it pulls everyone a little more towards the middle, and less towards the polars.
As someone from Bulgaria, I can say that I would much rather prefer the 2 party system. You see this allows you guys to have a clear winner and that winner or party can get stuff done. I understand the frustrations as I can imagine that there would be many people who will agree with some of the positions of one party and some of the positions of the other and therefore none of the 2 parties represents them completely. However, here in Bulgaria every party that gets over 4% enters parliament. We never get a clear winner, now we have 8 parties in and they can't form a coalition as they have been failing negotiations for 3 years now, during which time we go from a snap election into the next. Also having many parties, desn't mean you vote for the good ones. There are still no good ones. Instead of chosing the lesser evil of 2 we try to choose the lesser evil of 20 which means we can't get anything done as noone gets a majority. I get the frustrations but in reality your system is great. 2 parties that switch at the helm every 4-8 years but both trying to deliver something to their voterbase. The way I see it, 1 party regime is dictatorship(oppression) , 2 party regime (working effective democracy) , multiple party regime (not so much working and not very efficient democracy)
Great reaction! George was way ahead of his time. He noticed the hypocrisy early on in his career and devoted the rest of it to getting the word out to all of us. Unfortunately (or fortunately) it has taken us until now to finally wake up. ❤🙏😊
As much as you like George Carlin, I would be very curious and excited to see your take on Bill Hicks. So my suggestion: BILL HICKS: REVELATIONS is an amazing set.
Hi mom Heidi, it's nice to hear the child is doing well and you too. Well, we here in Germany and I think all over Europe are watching with interest what the future of the USA will be like, and by all accounts it won't look good. There is not much to say about the future leader, we know what to think of him. And one thing is for sure, the big chaos is coming next year, but that's what they wanted, it seems.
As a libertarian myself, I've been politically homeless my entire adult life. We have a two horse race here in England too......... We need small government and less interference in our lives to prosper 👍🏻
It's kind of hopeless when the parties lie to get your vote and then ignore their manifesto. It also feels hopeless when a significant portion of the population know everything about what the Kardashians are up to but can't tell you which politician represents their area. I'm from the UK and do vote but I get the sense that the system is rigged to look after the elite and corporations and not the citizens. I've also noticed that every country has a different system designed to protect the status quo. So in the UK we now have a shitty Labour party in power with a very low vote share but that's our first past the post system which means the same two parties keep winning. In France though Le Pen has won the most votes the last two elections but their system forces a second vote whereby the smaller parties gang up with the one who finishes 2nd to ensure she doesn't win round 2. The older I get the more cynical I become. Voting is becoming a mechanism used to try and lessen the chances of revolution and real change only seems to really happen after revolution.
@@K9Weddings Sure, one side was lying. We know that. Too bad so many of you fell for those lies. Some are already questioning how they voted? Many had no idea how tariffs work and only checked after election day.
@@K9Weddings The problem with a 2 party, and the winner takes it all, system is there is no motivation for change and COMPROMISE. GB and US are ruled by billionaires and Lords. The German multi party system definitely has its deficits too, but a one party government is the exception, so no party rules without compromises. If I want to send my wish for more environment protection, I vote Green and all parties understand the message, if I want a more liberal government I vote Social, and again the other parties hear the message
The RNC and DNC select who is going to be propped up as the representative for each party. Then, we have the choice to vote for those two candidates already chosen. It's really an illusion of choice that people swallow up.
I think you'll enjoy the Jello Biafra's spoken word albums; he explains and tell very sad and serious things in a funny way imo, i've also learnt a lot hearing a couple of this records.
As the creator of the most-watched Feature Documentary in your history I did my best to try and get a DO NOT VOTE campaign going and nobody listened. So best of luck to you Heidi. It's nice at least to find someone in America actually has a brain and a heart and a soul.
I completely stand with you on the elections (as far as the last elections went). I'm not from the US, but in my country (Argentina) there is a similar situation. We had 2 big political parties, equivalent to the Republican and Democrat, and the economy went to shit with both of them since a while now. I'm closer to one, although i try to be critical and objective, and i wouldn't call myself a supporter of any of them. To a point that i didn't even want to vote por that party, so we could at least STOP this big division, which is the country's biggest problem if you ask me. Because, it doesn't matter how shitty the economy is, each party will blur and twist the truth and people will have 2 completely opposite versions of reality, and the division feeds itself. But anyway, we've been having those 2 protagonists... but in the last elections there were 3 protagonists and the people voted to the third one, with the reasoning that it was something different/new. Now, the thing is that this dude (which is now president) is a CRAZY childish egocentric traumatized human being. And you could see that a mile away, before the elections. A lot of people voted him even if they thought the same thing as me; and even if they didn't agree with him. But they didn't want one of these classic parties to come to power again. But the thing that strikes me the most, and that i think speaks a lot about democratic elections is that there were ¡5! candidates. And one of those candidates was seemingly perfect for all people's requirements: he always stood out of the "cat and dog" conflict; he wasn't from any of the 2 classical parties; he had an original and integral economic proposal; he said he wanted to look forward instead of blaming the past (as the other 2 were constantly doing)... and most importantly, HE DIDN'T SEEM CRAZY, but a calm and rational human being. BUT... he wasn't very known. He didn't do as much noise as the now president did. He didn't scream and insult people in their faces; he didn't despise some people's ideologies; he didn't deny climate change and femicides, and the casualties of Argentina's last dictatorship; he didn't call his opponents "terrorists". But people chose the one that did all that. They had a third way candidate that wasn't crazy, but they chose the one that WAS crazy. (It's worth mentioning that this supposed "third way party" became the new conservative party, so we're still with the same social/ideological division, and even worse.) So, in conclusion: In democracy, it doesn't always matter what the message is, but how loudly you can scream it.
two parties are primarily fed to us in news and and even the occasional debate that manages to happen, so that's how we treat it. I think we ought to publically fund an equal platform for all candidates to campaign and market instead of relying on rich people to get the ones they want in front of our faces. We need a system that empowers us to vote whoever we want to vote for, rather than who we think has the best chance at beating the person we want the least.
"People want to do it anyways and see what happens" You said something alike during the reaction regarding making a statement in terms of not wanting to vote for either. As V from "V for Vendetta" once said: "There's no certainty, only opportunity"
It doesn't matter who you vote for because it's 2 sides of the same coin. Democracy is majority rules aka 51 beats 49 which implies that the minority have NO RIGHTS whatsoever. The pledge of allegiance says that the United States of America stands on a Republic. 'I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS...'
I think that South Park did one of the best possible takes about voting in America way back in 2004(ish?) in their episode called Douche and Turd. They talk about how nearly every election in history has been between some douche and some turd, because those are the kinds of people that make it that far in politics, and how that binary choice is usually the choice the voters have.
What we need is an option available in other countries and that is "none of the above" and if the majority chose none of the above then an new round of candidates are chosen.
He wouldn't have voted for Trump, but he sure as he would have had fun with everything surrounding him. From the media meltdown to the multiple panicked departments and the tons of lawsuits, he'd have enjoyed the Chaos that Trump was causing. A boatload of free content for him as well! ;)
america can't even begin to think about healing until third parties can realistically be part of the political process. Not even in a majority role but like in most european democracies where there are coalitions between a big and a small party in order to form a government and actually work together. Not saying this is always working out great in european countries.. but at least there is dialog between parties programmed into the system. The two party system will always just harden both sides and make politics about fighting and competition instead of cooperation and growth.
This is why I prefer Parliamentary Republic models with mixed member proportional electoral system. Not perfect but way more responsive and responsible than Presidential systems.
In the late 1960s I had a social studies teacher in high school Analy explain in great detail the importance of Voting. What I had not heard since from anyone (except George) the importance of NOT voting. Seriously NOT voting.
If no one votes, what happens? Do the politicians in congress decide the next president, despite the purpose of the electoral college being the institution that decides the president?
@@taoist32 The result will be decided by the extremists that wont stay home and you will put a dictator into office while youre crying "youre not legitimately elected"
Starting a group is the right way: Fight vor a proportional representation vote system where *EVERY* vote counts! Do this on all levels: Your town, your district, your county, your state and nationwide. Build up enough pressure or power to enforce this, perhaps by founding a "Change Vote Party".
So, by February 2025, how many people will have been president of The United States of America? The answer is: 45, unless something prevents Trump from taking office again. Grover Cleveland and Donald Trump both skipped a term. Cleveland was 22nd and 24th. Trump was 45th and will apparently also be 47th.
I do vote but only the best candidate for me. And 99% of the time my candidate will not pass the vote so I get to complain about the stupid decision the majority did when they voted the non-optimal candidate as a leader. When too many people use "strategic voting" to vote non-optimal candidate, we end up worse results than fully random voting would result. Fully random voting would result in optimal candidate being selected at least every now and then! Strategic voting is one of those "common sense" solutions that do not work in reality.
George Carlin . New York City, in the State of New York, born at New York Hospital. New York born and raised. If you enjoy a good audio book. His first book Brain Droppings is great.
God bless all real Americans who get by day in and day out and politics has no effect whatsoever. America is amazing and simple. The idiots fight over nothing.
I used to be Libertarian because I do firmly believe that the bureaucracy that creates our governance will not allow a third party, which would solve a lot of problems. Sadly most Libertarians I know now have become conspiracy theory nuts, and are just as dangerous as the other parties. I have become unaffiliated once again and also have lost all faith in the American electorate.
Back in the early days of my blog I had a (polite) contretemps with a young woman who believed that is everybody's DUTY to vote. Indeed, there was talk here in the UK of making it illegal not to vote (which I believe happens in some countries.) My point was simple: how can it be democratic to force people to vote for somebody they don't agree with? If you're going to have such a law, then you must at least have an entry on the ballot paper which reads: 'None of the above.'
you could vote third party. I know a lot of americans don't ever vote, because they don't want to choose between a greater evil and a lesser evil and they know a third party won't win anyway. but I honestly believe if a third party ever got up to like 5-10%, from all those disillusioned voters who usually stay home, and then still not get a seat at any table because of americas winner-takes-all electoral system it would have to spark conversation about changing the system to include minority parties into the political process. what america needs is coalitions of different parties working together to find common goals instead of two parties that hate each other and try to undo as much of the last administrations changes as possible every 4-8 years.
As far as I can remember the candidate that I have voted for has never won. Excepting one time where I felt I had to vote strategically. I'm not doing that again.
Listen to his Book Brain Droppings. His first book as read by George himself on RUclips here, you'll find all about George in his own words in the first 5 minutes. George Carlin , New York born and raised. New York City, New York State , born at New York Hospital.
"If you vote you have no right to complain." I subscribe to that in principle. Another reason is what the German author Kurt Tucholsky wrote about 100 years ago; "If elections would change something they were forbidden." (Since this may be right for other democracies than the USA, ithere is more truth in it for the USA because in the end the difference between Democrats and Republicans is very low.) So I did not vote for decades. But as a German I returned to voting since there is the AfD which in many parts is fascist - and you can be a little bit fascist as you can be a little bit pregnant. So voting for any other party is just a small contribution to not let them get to power. And yes I do not vote FOR someone else but AGAINST the AfD. It is a choice for what I guess the lower evil.
I really wish George was still around. I'd LOVE to hear his take on Trump... XD Oy. But hey... Buckle up folks. It's going to get pretty bad here in America.
Oh, now this I need to see!! I'm 1 sec in and I'm already shure I will agree with Carlin on this one. I an 52 years old and have woted two times. It doesn't matter. If everyone could not wote for these power hungry maniacs...who should they then put into power?? Let's go....
The lesser of two evils... is still evil. Abstaining from voting in such cases has ALWAYS been a valid (and logical) option. Voting is a RIGHT (well, maybe a privilege), and an OPTION - not an obligation. George NAILED it on the "no right to complain" thing. I've been saying that for YEARS... it was so refreshing and validating to hear George say it.
I live in a conservative state that has voted Republican all but twice since 1940. It has nothing to do with who to vote for and everything to do with the fact that my vote does not count. I still vote, but it is pointless. Get rid of the electoral college and give each person a meaningful vote, then I will care.
Jesse Ventura was an independent who was elected governer of Minnesota because for once independents were allowed to debate. Which they haven't allowed since he was elected, lol, wonder why??? He has been telling people to vote Independent since he was elected in the 90's.
You should react to George Carlin AI special. I see people arguing for and against whether or not the AI nailed George and it be great to hear another take.
Welcome to motherhood Heidi. I'm a grandad by now, but I thoroughly enjoyed the birth and upbringing of my 4 girls and 1 boy - while their mother obviously enjoyed each of them even more! It IS a struggle at times, but the rewards are long-lasting.
I love George Carlin, he thought and feels like I do, so it really resonates with me. Just on your elections, I'm an Aussie so it is what it is, but I had to laugh my ass off the other day with a comment on some other channel which said 'Super depressed for the world today. The American election is way to important for the world to let Americans do the voting' well I found it funny. Our so called Western Democracy is absolute shite, hardly ever is there a bipartisan agreement for the good of the people it always needs to be debated because it wasn't an oppositions idea. I'm fed up with it tbh, Australia is no different, just a much smaller, less aggressive in nature by it's people.
Yeah, i have linked that video quite a lot in the last months. And hey .. our prophet was again right even 15 years (or whatever) before. Btw.: even here in Germany its quite normal to vote for the lesser evil, or at least it was when i was younger and we also only had a 3 party system. At some point then when i was still in school it became at least a 4 party system. However, i always just voted vor something like "the marxist leninist party of germany" just to say "fork you all". Sadly there was no anarchist party, since that would have been what i really wanted. But in the end i also haven't voted anymore in the last 30 years or whatever because things will never really change.
I personally am a registered independent. I think that both parties in the U.S have good and bad ideas alike, and I could see myself voting for either with the right candidate. This time around I did not vote as I disagree with both parties representatives this time. I don't mind Trump from a policy perspective, however he still talks to much and has little tact about things. I refuse to vote for Harris because there was no primary and they completely skipped the democratic process in making her the Democrats nominee. The main issue i find with people all over the country is they are to quick to believe words over actions. Words are nice and they make us feel good, but the actions of those elected officials mean more. Very few presidents this country has ever had have been able to or have actually done what they promised they would do. If by now the public is swayed by words and phrases that sounds good or bad then the country is in a dire state not just from the politician points but also from the voter side. Stop listening to what people say, and look at what they do and did, actions speak louder than words and currently in this country more people vote for pretty and nice sounding ideas instead of good actions and track records. EDIT: Disagree with my points if you want to, but just remember, ideas remain ideas if they are never acted on.
2:29 As a european who still knows one or two things about US politics I know it's hard and propably not feasible in your system but, if many people think like you and your brother, my idea would be: Found your own party and get everyone who doesn't vote or votes small parties, to vote this new party. Ofcourse it perhaps will never happen but POSSIBLY after people see what Trump will do to a vast majority of americans, economically, socially and even existentially next election there will be a chance. Hell, it would even be better if the Republicans split up into the old "normal" conservative party and whatever Trumps cult of idiocy is. This way there might be a good outcome out of this mess. I mean maybe they'll prove us wrong and the US and the world will become "gReAT" during his term but I sincerely doubt it. It will be great for Musk, Putin and Trumps other "friends" and their companies shareholders and that's about it. We will see come January but I'd prepare for the worst. Good luck, I wish the US and the rest of us all the best but this doesn't look good. Greetings from the EU, your former allies.
Remember one thing Trump and the federal government don't handle abortion that state level politics. Everything has different laws coming with abortion
2:45 That's a great idea, start that! Look at how European governments elect their representatives, and suggest an alternative that suits the US and also breaks free from a two-party system. This probably means looking at the power of and the representation in the courts, the house, the senate and the presidency all at once, because right now, they are upholding each other...
Apart from the 2 party system, it's mostly the electoral college I don't understand. As a republican in California, or Democrat in Wyoming, why even bother participating in presidential elections? Your vote does not matter!
Very few people are aware that in the late 80's the two parties made an agreement to work together to make sure that no third party ever got any traction. I also did not vote. Out of 337 million people how many actually voted? Nearly 1/3 of the population is not eligible to vote. Out of the 245 million registered voters, 65% voted. So, out of a population of 337 million 159 million voted that is 47.2% of the population.
Trump promised in one speech that they would never have to vote again. He didn't elaborate that I am aware of. If you know, I'm interested. Did Carlin offer a better way? Is extrapolating Carlin the way to right the ship?
The two-party system is an inherent consequence of your first-past-the-post system.
Here in Denmark, any party that gets more than 2% of the national vote gets representation in parliament. It’s then up to those parties to agree on a prime minister.
EDIT: … and 4-5% in Sweden and Germany. The salient point is that it isn’t “winner-takes-all” like the US, where all votes in a given area goes to the candidate with the most votes. If you’re a republican in California or a democrat in Texas your vote is basically erased.
In Sweden it's 4%.
In Germany it's 5%.
@@42Mrgreenman As 4 Democracies in the old world, it's one man, one vote.
Maybe some day, USA will experience this form of democracy....
Yes!!! I love how you put that!
If you have selfish ignorant citizens you're going to get selfish ignorant leaders.

Carlin speaks truth!
He just delivers it in a way that keeps us laughing! 😂

some may argue its people who vote like you that keep us where we are with politics in america. some people, not necessarily me, but some. food for thought.
The USA does not a standard nationwide registry. Thet is why people need to register first to able to vote,
@@cyrielwollring4622what you are saying is: the US are outdated and need to get back in time.
The registry is basically the census - every citizen of age gets an ID and can vote.
@@Cau_No No I am not. I was comparing the different systems. USA can do whatever it wants.
Wtf? Hahaha the america I've known has never been fantastic, so I'm okay with that.
Vote for Cthulhu. Why vote for a lesser evil?
Hey heidi so happy for you congrats!!
We have 11 parties in Denmark at this time. That's 'interesting' too.... - But atleast, it pulls everyone a little more towards the middle, and less towards the polars.
It DOES make sense, that you can complain, if you voted, for the OPPOSITION, not the ruling party/Coalition 🙂 At lest it does in our election system
@@Limmosee exactly. You can complain. Once upon a time people cared.
I voted for Kamala and Tim, because Trump just ain't it... so, I voted for them because I know a third party didn't have a hope in the world to win.
So my suggestion:
BILL HICKS: REVELATIONS is an amazing set.
by definition voting for the lesser of two evils is just voting for the better of the 2 given options and the lesser of 2 evils may not be evil at all
Hi mom Heidi, it's nice to hear the child is doing well and you too.
Heidi
Federal Elections need to add "None Above" as a candidate making re-do elections with credible candidates.
Haha I love that idea.
Voting is never hopeless, in every democracy the nation has the government it deserves, an now You get what You voted for
It's kind of hopeless when the parties lie to get your vote and then ignore their manifesto.
That implies that there is a democracy, which there is not
The RNC and DNC select who is going to be propped up as the representative for each party. Then, we have the choice to vote for those two candidates already chosen. It's really an illusion of choice that people swallow up.

Back then, Political views and opinions were awful. BUT, compared to today. WOW!!! Carlin would be SPOT ON CORRECT.
One comedian no one rarely mentions is Richard Jeni. Check out his take on politics. It's short but funny.
(It's worth mentioning that this supposed "third way party" became the new conservative party, so we're still with the same social/ideological division, and even worse.)
So, in conclusion: In democracy, it doesn't always matter what the message is, but how loudly you can scream it.
two parties are primarily fed to us in news and and even the occasional debate that manages to happen, so that's how we treat it. I think we ought to publically fund an equal platform for all candidates to campaign and market instead of relying on rich people to get the ones they want in front of our faces. We need a system that empowers us to vote whoever we want to vote for, rather than who we think has the best chance at beating the person we want the least.
☝️☝️☝️
Thats the idea. Lets start the "No party, party". I'll sign up for that in 1/2 a second.
"People want to do it anyways and see what happens" You said something alike during the reaction regarding making a statement in terms of not wanting to vote for either. As V from "V for Vendetta" once said: "There's no certainty, only opportunity"
Current politics remind me of the distopian depictions of society in 80s movies
I think Americans should try voting for what's in their best interest for a change.
I wish George Carlin was still alive today he was the only person to make sense of

america can't even begin to think about healing until third parties can realistically be part of the political process.

@ this is the second time this imbecile will inherit a good economy and claim he did it all. I’m done.
@@KaBeeM People voting third party are the reason why the "lesser of two evils" lost...
As far as I can remember the candidate that I have voted for has never won. Excepting one time where I felt I had to vote strategically. I'm not doing that again.
I do wonder as an European how that guy will make everything great tbh
There are many protest votes I like. Vote Cthulhu 2028. Why vote for the lesser evil?
Electoral college BS!!! More Americans would vote if it were by the popular vote!!!
Or, as Billy Connolly said: Don't vote! It just encourages them.
That's very smart, but it does mean that you are letting people who are dumber than you decide who controls your country.
While he didn't really hold to a party, etc. his views were typically more left leaning than right leaning.
thanks for the video
Mark my words…November the 5th 2024 will be the date that historians look back on as the true beginning of world war 3.
Only for those who've not been paying attention since 2008.
Hes right more than ever.
May you live in interesting times.
old chinese curse
I didn't know about that agreement. Do you have sources for the information. Although I'm no American, I would be interested.
Trump promised in one speech that they would never have to vote again. He didn't elaborate that I am aware of. If you know, I'm interested.
Did Carlin offer a better way? Is extrapolating Carlin the way to right the ship?
