I got into Nusrat Ali Fatah Khan in the mid 1970's and have been a fan of Eastern music since then, especially the genre called quaawli which Nusrat was a master of. I'd love to see you react to some of his work. A truly incredible vocalist. Do go and have a listen to him even if you don't do a reaction.

The fact that this made you cry even when the English translation of the lyrics did not do justice to the actual words being said, shows how powerful these legendary singers are.
The song relates "dealing with the struggles of life" to Sufi whirling, which is a type of dance common in Dervishes. Now, Dervishes are known for their contentment in living with material poverty. They may lack food, water, or shelter, but they never get angry about it, regret it, or complain to God about their fate. The just "Jhoom" (swirl in a trance) to thank God anyway and telling Him that they are happy with what they have.
Naseebo Lal and Abida Parveen put on a masterclass getting the message across. Their voices have both pain and bliss at the same time. They feel for every struggling person on this planet, admire their strength, and let them know that it's ok no matter what.
They were already legends when I was 14 years old and are still legends now when I'm 36.

The translation is usually very good but the title Tu Jhoom really just means you swing or swirl like a dervish. That's it. this is a sufi (Islamic mysticism) type of song/poem put to music very expertly. From Rumi to Ghalil Jibran or many sufi poets in the sub-continent have a rich legacy of awesome thoughts and poems for the whole world

    • @BryanSteve-m8q
      @BryanSteve-m8q Год назад +3

Yes but the word jhoom means not just to swing or swirl. It means to swing or swirl in an entranced, ecstatic or transcendent way. I guess not all words have a one word translation.

I am from Pakistan and I was going through something similar that you are going through right now. a sort of jealousy from some people I know who are achieving new things and I feel myself to be stuck in a cycle. This song reminded me again there's no need to be jealous. everything comes on its time and everyone has their time written for things to come. How many are there who don't even have what I have and I should be thankful for what I currently have!

Amazing message. Beautiful vocals. Visually stunning. The parable you gave at the end reminded me of a similar parable. A man falls off a cliff and is hanging on a branch halfway down, when he prays for God to help him. Immediately a strong updraft blows he back on top of the cliff. And he says, "Never mind God, I got this."

    (Naseebo sings in punjabi)
    Embracing the pains
    While keeping on smiling
    Kept on fighting the sunlights
    And found my shades
Sorrows are urs, joys are ours
    all I know just this
What am I to do by understanding everyone?
just make my heart understand that
You swirl (dance) swirl swirl swirl
    (Abida sings in punjabi )
    Me loony, don't know anything
    Sing while entranced
even if you make the whole world in agreement, fool
There will still be no peace
If you find all the happiness
than What will be left behind?
There is nothing in your capability/grasp
Just make your heart understand that
You swirl (dance) swirl swirl swirl
    (Naseebo sings in punjabi)
I am satisfied with my being
    I am above my limits/capabilities
This world is non of my worries
    I understood everything
    (Abida sings in punjabi )
What to do with high glories?
Whats (the point) in touching the skies?
I have to live while smiling
    I am free of doubts/assumptions

    (Naseebo sings in punjabi)
Me, I am just like myself
Why would I shy away from myself?
even if you make the whole world in agreement, fool
There will still be no peace

    (Abida sings in punjabi )
    Whats your, will find you
    By any excuse
There is nothing in your capability/grasp
Just make your heart understand that
You swirl (dance) swirl swirl swirl
    (Abida sings in punjabi )
    Me loony, don't know anything
    Me loony......
    Me loony......
    Me loony......
Oh me loony, don't know anything
Oh me loony, don't know anything
    Me entranced, don't know anything
    Me entranced, don't know anything
    don't know anything ......
    You swirl..
    (Naseebo sings in punjabi)
I am satisfied with my being
    swirl (dance) swirl swirl swirl
    (Abida sings in Urdu )
    Ah, the gaze ....
    The gaze ....
The gaze of the friend/beloved (which)
reveals the secret (on to you)
Why wouldn't you be Proud (of )
    your special destiny?
Why wouldn't you be Proud of
    your special destiny?
    Be proud of ....
Oh you swirl (dance) swirl swirl swirl
    End.
This song so liberating, freeing ......

Great review. 'Tu Jhoom' translation is over complicated in the subtitles. In general it means "You chill/dance" You celebrate, basically.

    • @aamnahere6250
      @aamnahere6250 Год назад +4

You're right that it's complicated but in the spirit of the song, it is an accurate translation. Jhoom is to dance but here it's a dance of rising beyond our minds and bodies, a dance that inspires letting go of our existential anxieties. It's not just to chill. Not only is it inaccurate but it also cheapens the concept this song is putting out.

Beautiful words and interpretation by you Rosalie, always love your reactions and energy and message. Coke Studio gives importance to portry as much the vocals and musical instruments, that why they provide complete translation which may not be word by word but more understandable to foreign listeners. Poetry is a great part of Pakistani culture thus so much focus on Sufi music. Cant wait for next reaction. I have few suggestions from Coke Studio S14. Please react to songs:
    >"Go" by Atif and Abdullah (positive message again)
    >"Phir Milenge" by Faisal and Young Stunners (little sad with lyrics about heartbreak but also about hope)-My fav song of teh season great composition.
    >"Ye Duniya" by Karakoram, Talha and Faris (Positive Song)
    >"Mehrum" by Asfar and Arooj (Sad song but great erie song), Arooj was nominated for two Grammys and won Grammy for her song Mohabbat in 2022 for Best Global Performance (also nominate dfor best new artist but didnt win), and also got nominate din 2023 for her latest song "Udhero Na".

    @Rosalie,
This vibes to me like Orphaned Land's "New Jerusalem" song, which I'm sure you would appreciate.
I know you had an Orphaned Land reaction already, although that was one of the most blend songs they have (in my opinion), but their albums and music vary so much that I would urge you to try another.
New Jerusalem is rather smooth and vibes well with this song. Birth of the Three or Kiss of Babylon are very very different. Barakah is a headbanger... Also they have all of them on a live video from 2011 (Tel Aviv) in very good audio quality, worth watching and listening.
    Consider doing them again please.

Greetings from Scotland! It's been a looooong time since I saw you react to Diana Ankudinova and I miss your perspective on this young phenomenon Rosalie! She has done so many songs in that time, all beautiful and so different. Can I plead with you to please pick one of the new recent releases? Pretty please? 🙏🙏
