Great Video! My two cents worth...The way the Gurus in my family taught us was NEVER to use the term 'temple'. 🛕Devastan, Devalaya, Devala, Mandir, Gudi, Ambalam, Koil/Kovil, Shakti Peeth, Mattha, Kshetra 🛕are the correct terms to be used. That 'temple' is actually a christian word coined by the jesuits for Jewish place of worship (synagogue), which was later mapped on to Sanatani sacred places during colonization. So let us start practicing using correct terminology even in english while we reclaim our sacred places. 🧡🕉 Har Har Mahadev! 🏹🔥
Great video. As a Hindu growing up, Muslims laughed at us calling us Idol worshippers. But as I got older I realized they worship a black stone in Middle East ( Lord Shiva). Christians laughed at us because we are idol worshiper’s. Yet they worship a cross go figure..
Our small Hindu community has built a mandir on the African Highveld. It is a Bhagawan Murga mandir which is highly energized and frequented by the Tamil, Gujerati, Hindi community, and some.
@@HinduLifestyle Yes, South Africa. There is a large Hindu community in S.A and we have endeavored to protect our culture. Where I live we are just a handful. In my mandir we celebrate every prayer from Kavady in January to Skanda in December. It is awesome. You should visit S.A.
I am so glad you are doing videos again! Please keep it up because it’s guys like you who have allowed me to understand Hinduism so much for better and become more devoted to
really well done and well researched video. Most Hindus who are gone through western education lack this fundamental understanding about our Dharma, they to think that our Mandirs and Murtis are just symbolical representations. Videos like yours really help instilling clarity into the minds of young generation.
Namaste from Mauritius great explanation especially for us born raised living outside of India. Right now Mahashivratree celebration is already in full swing here.Mauritius is the only place where Maha Shivratri is a week-long festival. Maha Shivratri, the Grand Night of Shiva, is celebrated only on a single day around the world including India. But why and how Mauritius became an exception in this matter is a unique story. Most of all, Mauritians know about the story of Pandit Jhummun Giri of Triolet, who had a dream about a forgotten lake in the south of the island. Pandit Jhummun Giri, with his companion, went on a trip to find out the lost sacred lake. But there is also a back story: That of forgotten Pandit Sanjibonlal. He came to Mauritius as an indentured laborer but as soon as his contract was over, he returned to India. During his stay as an indentured labourer, he had spotted the divine appeal of Grand Bassin, which remained in his mind and heart after returning to India. He had planned to build a Shiva temple at Grand Bassin. He returned to Mauritius in year 1866 as a merchant via Reunion Island. He brought clothes from India to be sold to the resident laborers. With the money gained, he bought the mansion of Mr Langlois at Triolet and also saved some money to materialize his dream of turning Grand Bassin into a place of pilgrimage. Later in 1972, the then Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, brought Ganga (Holy) water from Gomukh, India, and mixed it with the water of Pari Talao and renamed it as Ganga Talao. Ganga, who is always associated with Mahadev Shiva, is the spiritual center of Hinduism in India, the same way as Ganga Talao is the spiritual center of Hinduism in Mauritius. The world’s biggest gatherings of human beings at Kumbh Mela is held on the banks of the river Ganga in India. Similarly, the biggest gathering of Mauritius is held at Ganga Talao during Maha Shivratri. During this time between 300 000/ 400 000 devotees make the pilgrimage to Ganga Talao! An amazing spectacle. Imagine thousands of devotees worshipping, chanting, making offerings and pooja to the Gods. It could be leaves from the sacred ‘bilva' or Bael tree or vegetables and fruits to the delight of monkeys. It can take up to three days and even longer for pilgrims to walk to Grand Bassin for the religious ceremony. It depends where they live. They are well looked after during the long walk. You'll see lots of rest stops and stalls alongside the road. They are manned by volunteers who offer water, juice and something to eat. Temporary shelters provide a welcome overnight rest stop. You’ll see devotees chanting mantras. Most of them are dressed in white which symbolizes purity. They carry or pull a type of chariot called ‘kanwar’ made of wood, bamboo and lately some plastic. All duly decorated with deities, bells, small mirrors and colourful flowers. It can take a month to make elaborate kanwars. There is now stiff competition among the youth for the biggest kanwar. Some are so large they create traffic jams! At times youngsters play a remix version of Hindi songs. Religious Hindus are not very impressed by this modern behaviour.Devotees will collect holy water from the lake to take back to their own local temple. The most devout worshipers remain for overnight prayer rituals and fasting. The Mauritius Sanathan Dharma Temples Federation (MSDFT) manages the site at Grand Bassin together with the Hindu Maha Sabha. Other Hindu associations help when there are festivals. You can well imagine the time and effort needed to organize the Mauritius Maha Shivaratri festival for so many devotees! Pious Mahashivratree to all! Har Har Mahadev!🙏🕉🔱
Thank you for taking the time to share this. This is stunning. I just learned about the Kanwar this past week after my heard about the tragic story of one of them catching fire. I plan to make a video one day on Mauritius and the Hindu diaspora there.
