I bought the MS261-CM (20” bar) last year and have been quite happy with its performance. The 20” bar is perhaps a bit large for the 50cc engine, but otherwise it’s been a dream to use. And at 10.8 lbs is manageable to use all day. I went with this because of both weight and price. The 362 and 462 I’m sure are great, but if you’re on a budget the 261 CM is a solid choice (IMHO). Thanks for the great vid Mike, as always!
I use the 261 for clearing trees from the river with the 20 inch bar. Its a GREAT saw especially at 4hp at ten pounds. Its great for maneuvering and all day use. I got a 662cm and its great with the 36 and 32 inch bar but it is HEAVY and wears you out quickly. Especially on small stuff where a small saw is better.
Back when I used to do tree work, no one liked using the big saws. Weight is a huge issue as most of the day is spent with the saw in weird positions. You are almost never in a perfect squared off cutting position cutting rounds. Everyone fought over who got to use the 260s leaving the 460 sitting 99 percent of the time. Just some food for thought if you are considering any one of the pro saws.🙂 Great test btw👍
Great vid Mike, the only part I’m missing is some background information about the 462. It’s the newer version of the 461. They made it 1kg lither got from 76,5cc to 72cc. But kept the same power 6hp and made it faster. Great achievement from stihl💪🏼
I commented on one of the 880 vids to try the 462. I know it's apples to oranges but the 462 has my vote hands down. (If your not up in a 36 or up bar)
Well, I'm debating these exact two saws. Based on weight being so damm close, within .5 KG, I'm going to drop the extra bucks and go with the 462. I have a gift card for $500.00 so it won't hurt the wallet as much. Thanks for the video. Definitely made my decision.
Mike....As always great job. Where the MS462 will eat the MS362's lunch is with 24" and up bars in big wood. I have a tuned (stops removed) 362 and a tuned 441. I have a hard time bogging the 441 with a 28" bar and full skip chain where I can bog the 362 with a 24" bar and full skip chain. As most will tell you (and it is true in cars also) there is no substitute for displacement all other things being equal. Send that 362 to Jack Beeler /Tree Monkey/Mastermind for their saw magic and watch it eat the stock 462 with a 28" bar! Keep the great videos coming. They are fun to watch and educational!!
When they came out with the 034 044 064 . Thought I died and went to heaven !! felt like a stock car motor in my hands . loved it cant imagine what them are like , had loggen accident 21 yrs ago.. para ever since . but love your videos... ThankYou !!
I dont even cut wood I think these are fun (to watch) not sure why you got thumbs down....I did it one time and said why, and we worked it out. As a matter of fact, the agent on my Dad's estate proved me wrong too. Hat's off to your real estate friend!
Next thing ya know Mike will be on tour doing the Lumberjack thing at the Fairs! 462- I got 2 seconds ahead on the down cut - made up more time on the up cut, How do they compare in "vibration fatigue" ? Great vid- it was fun ( and no bunnies were harmed during filming :) )
I just recently replaced my 1970's Homelite Super XL 925 with the $850. MS 362. I considered the MS 462 but it was and additional $400. ($1250.) Compared to my old Homelite the Sthil MS 362 is an ANIMAL! Should have traded up years ago.
I have the sthil ms 261 c-m with a 16 inch bar and the ms 362 c-m with a 18 inch bar with the sthil hexa chain absolutely love those saws im really thinking about getting a ms 462 c-m asvel
Hey Mike, enjoyed the Mustang to the Shelby comparison. You called it right too. The Shelby kicked butt. You can probably buy that 462 at a better price since it is used, don't know till you ask ;-) Thanks for sharing.
Mike- Several years ago I purchased a 046. I have 3 bars, 20”, 28” and the 24”. I leave the 24 on as it is perfect. That baby cuts and the 2 in 1 file works great(thanks for the video on that!). I love that saw! Say, I also have a t200. If I could only have one saw that would be it (I also have a 029). Great videos Mike I appreciate you and Melissa taking the time to upload them for us!
I have a 461 ms my brother in law has the 362. We both heat with wood water furnace. I had a really old 041 which still runs great. Just had to find parts. Which i never need. Really been a good saw.
Thank you very much for this Video. The Video is well edited. I'm also thinking about getting a 462 for the semi-professional sector and don't want to make any compromises. The video really helped me with my decision.
Nice comparison there Mike, but I see red saws in my future lol, and we differ on cars but my dream truck would be an 87 chevy crew cab with a 572ci big block 4wd!!!
You can hear the rpm's are higher on the 462. I would say that the 362 is the Mustang of the two and the 462 is the 70 Roadrunner. Just my Mopar opinion. Both are great saws.
Awesome video Mike. I have my Dad's 038 he bought back in the mid 70s and love it but those two saws that you just compared would eat these Virginia pines up lol
I actually own both models. My 362, with a 20"bar seems to rev faster but it doesn't have that m-tronic crap like the 462, with a 25". The 462 is fussy. Maybe needs a reset? My 362 is older but never had to make even the slightest adjustment to the carb
Wow Mike me too! 69/70 Mach 1! I’d be thrilled with a 351 Cleveland 4 speed I wouldn’t refuse a390 or 428 either I had a 67 Galaxy in 390 and that was fast! Won’t tell you what happened other than stupid hurts 😂
Great test Mike, thanks! Definitely will be considering it for the upgrade. And BTW, yet another similarity we have in regard to dream cars....my first car was a 69 Mustang. Miss that car....maybe someday I'll get a newer one!
I guess I must have the Shelby Cobra Super Snake then ms880 ported with muff mod head gasket delete 😉 I do like my 066 and 362 though 036 is a pretty good saw too! I use it every once in a while 😁👍
Yes they do. A RUclips video compared a MS261 CM to a MS362CM. Both made two cuts on a large log and surprising they both averaged 14.3 secs./cut. Then both made 4 cuts on a smaller log and the 261CM averaged 10.7 secs./cut while the 362CM averaged 10.8. /cut. That being said, one could assume that the MS 261CM should be faster than a regular carbed (non M-Tronic) MS 362.
I've got a 460 Magnum 28 inch bar that's about 15 years old it's been a good saw it's just too heavy for cutting firewood I use it when I cut Big Trees still. Got a little husky for the firewood .
Going on my 44th year in the woods running saws ,heating my home with wood etc. I've ran many ,many different saws over the years and owned a few along the way too. Last September I was able through my stihl dealer who is also a buddy of mine to get my hands on the only 500i in the area. May be more here now but if there is I havent seen or heard of any yet around here but I love mine. But out of all the saws I've ran the 362 is not much to brag on. Power to weight ratio isnt good it's not impressive at all in my book. That 462 though that's a nice machine.
Great video, I know it's over a year past, but seeing as how I just purchased my first Stihl, the ms462 and you mentioned the Mustang GT500 (Awesome car), I had to add my two cents. Anyone that knows me, knows I'm a super bike guy. The crap Remington chainsaw I've been managing with for the past couple years is like riding and maintaining a 1979 HD (always a rough ride and always tools in the back pocket). As soon as I started my new ms462, The first thought in my mind was, Damn I got me a Suzuki GSXR 1000 (It doesn't get any better than that). We'll off to the woods for a great day of fun. Oh yeah, keep up the good work, liken the channel.
I agree. I've got a 261CM, and was told it's the 462CM's little brother (50.2cc, but same technology) I haven't used it yet, but seen a video on RUclips that compared it to a 362CM. Both made two cuts on the same log and surprising they both averaged 14.3 secs. Then both made 4 cuts on a smaller log and the 261CM averaged 10.7 secs. while the 362CM averaged 10.8. That being said, one would assume that the MS 261CM should beat the carbed (non M-tronic) MS 362.
I think if you put a 24” bar on the 462 and the 20” bar on the 362 then it would be a fair match as you have to consider the displacement and the HP to make it actually even! I do believe the standard bar for the 362 is a 20” and for the 462 a 25” ! Just me .02
I have a 361 that I’ve always loved. It’s never let me down and I’m thankful for the lightweight. I do a bit of trimming and felling on the side for people mostly residential stuff, but on occasion I’ve done some area clearing in forest land with some large specimens. I’ve been looking at a 462. Would it be worth it to look at 661? I once had some 100+ Foot red oaks that I was able to clear for a gentleman & he used them to build a retirement cabin in Bloomer WI.
OK I have to ask it you sure you are going to give the 462 cm back and not just keep it you seem to be liking it alot and I have seen buy watching and looking around where you could really use that saw you have some good size trees just my observations love the videos and the family keep them coming
You know what? I just got a 462 and sold my 441 to a co worker. It was in beautiful condition and I sold it with a spare lightweight 25 inch bar, a spare chain and got $600. 462 is noticeably lighter. Should have dry enough ground to do some cutting soon.
Was it worth the swap? The thing is I only use the 441 for felling big trees and it runs like a champ. I use my ms362 for 75% of the time and my ms261 for most of my trimming. I love the mtronic so will some day get the ms462. Let me know how you like yours.
@@markloomis1415 Mine was a three saw plan, 261, 441 and 661. Use the 261 50%, the 441 40% and the 661 10%. I felt the 441 was heavy and a touch weak with the 25 inch bar in some hardwoods. Mine was an early non mtronic. For me I think it was worth changing to 462 and the big help was having a couple guys that would want to buy the 441 so that helped with the cost. I clean my saws up good when I'm done using them and don't abuse them so they bought a mint saw. I did like the red headed step child 441but 462 does feel lighter and better balanced with Japanese light weight 25 inch bars than 441 and technically should have more power. Back of property too wet to work on the log pile right now but I think I'm going to love it.
I've been cutting firewood for years with my 441c,but the older I get the heavier it feels. I'm lookin at a ms362 at my local pawn shop that looks great and has a $280 price tag on it. I was lookin for a 261,but beggers cant be choosers. Most of what I cut can be easily handled with a smaller saw and the price is right. I'll keep my 441 with its 28" bar for bigger stuff, but if the 362 is still there,I think I'll get it Tuesday.
I've got a 261CM, and was told it's the 462CM's little brother (50.2cc, but same technology) I haven't used it yet, but seen a video on RUclips that compared it to a 362CM. I'm torn between the MS 261 (18" bar) and the MS 362 (20" bar) for an acreage saw.

In the tree business I work at we use a lot of 362. Like you said the bigger saws like the 460 and up are just to heavy.
The 462cm is a monster of a saw. No question it is a game changer.
Does it oil well, i had a 460 and was verry stingy on oil
I enjoyed the last few videos, saws, tractors, tree felling......like they say on TV> back tour regular programming already om progress
Very nice and unbiased comparison of the 2 chainsaws. I wish there were more reviewers out there like you Mike.
I like how it’s video #362, featuring the 362.
Thumbs up to the grapple doing a fine job holding the log steady.
At my age, my ms 362 is as fast as I need 🤠🤣 but if I were younger and then could keep up with it.....that Speed Demon would be mine....👍🤠
Nice saws . I have an old 034 which I like but really hard to start . My favorite saw I have is an old XL 130 Homelite .Nice video Mr. Morgan
362 is all I need on my property.
361 it is for me, Stihl doesnt offer the 362 in Mexico :(

It has same hp as 461 but doesnt have tq of a 461

I have an old Stihl 026. Great saw, I just use for clean up jobs. Bring back the Chevelle SS396 for me. Have a great day.
66' Impala SS for me.
Jerry Morgan my 026 is still going strong, nearly 30 years!
I have a Stihl 026 here, too, that has been pretty much bullet proof. Breaking in a MS 311 now and hope it is as strong and can last as long.
Had a Butternut Yellow '67 Chevelle SS 396 with bench seats and a Hurst shifter on the 4 speed...wish I had kept it! Tim @ Cliffside Acres

How are you doing mate?
261 and 462 is a very good combo 👌

I have an old Stihl 028 super and a Stihl 029 farm boss . Love them both
I have a stihl 036 love that saw for the relativity easy maintenance
My wife purchased a ms 462 c-m today for my birthday. Mighty fine Singing Sawdust Slanger. Big ups Mr. Mike
That cherry is some good looking wood. Good demo of the saws.
Great video I'm a new subscriber I got the Dodge Demon Stihl 661 Magnum it's a very powerful chainsaw

5 seconds x ? that is a time saver. Another great production.
Thanks bro l gone buy stihl ms 362 . I had already stihl ms211.but it's very old and weak.
They both sound great!
The 362 is excellent. Very torquey.
Easy to start. I have four chainsaws, all Stihl. No favourites.
I just pick the right size for the job.
The 462 is a BEAST!
Just imagine if the chain was sharp on the 462. 😉
Hi Mike. Stihl 462 CM is really top. Greet from Slovakia .
I have a 461 ms my brother in law has the 362. We both heat with wood water furnace. I had a really old 041 which still runs great. Just had to find parts. Which i never need. Really been a good saw.

Nice comparison there Mike, but I see red saws in my future lol, and we differ on cars but my dream truck would be an 87 chevy crew cab with a 572ci big block 4wd!!!
Awesome chainsaws! 👍 great comparison video, mike I think you need a 3 point winch on that RK-37 yup!
Yeah a GT 500 is out of my price range too but my 302 powered Falcon is a lot of fun to drive ! Thanks for the great video Mike !
hi there speed costs money how fast can you afford. this was a old car saying .
I clocked both saws, the 462 cut was 1.29 seconds on the down cut faster than the 362.
Enjoyed that Mike,...Thanks!
Good! I was jus countin one onethousand twoonthousand :)

Cool comparison, I was thinking about 2 seconds faster per cut. Have a Great Day
You can hear the rpm's are higher on the 462. I would say that the 362 is the Mustang of the two and the 462 is the 70 Roadrunner. Just my Mopar opinion. Both are great saws.
Just picked up the 462 C-M.
Awesome video Mike. I have my Dad's 038 he bought back in the mid 70s and love it but those two saws that you just compared would eat these Virginia pines up lol
Love my 661 wouldnt mind a 462 though
I wish you could get a MS261 C-M to demo and compare to your 362.
I bought both brand new lol...
Yes sir. It rips. Great job making the comparison.
I actually own both models. My 362, with a 20"bar seems to rev faster but it doesn't have that m-tronic crap like the 462, with a 25". The 462 is fussy. Maybe needs a reset? My 362 is older but never had to make even the slightest adjustment to the carb

Nice choice on cars. The mustangs and I share the same birth year 64’
Nice video ! Both great saws imho ... I would give the nod to the 462c especially if you have one on steroids
I just bought a ms461. Had a ms170 and ms290 b4 that man is the 461 a jump up.
Those are both nice saws but I’m al about the power!!!
Great video, short and to the point.
Did you ever remodel the house you bought and is your plans to rent it or resale it?
gt350 vs gt500 would be more analogous. Also the 462's $400 premium over the 362 makes the choice easier for some.
Great comparison, Mike
I heard you in the video say WOW,,,,,462 new and improved pony
Great test Mike, thanks! Definitely will be considering it for the upgrade. And BTW, yet another similarity we have in regard to dream cars....my first car was a 69 Mustang. Miss that car....maybe someday I'll get a newer one!

i hear the elec. carb on the cm saws makes a good difference, too
Yes they do.

I've got a 460 Magnum 28 inch bar that's about 15 years old it's been a good saw it's just too heavy for cutting firewood I use it when I cut Big Trees still. Got a little husky for the firewood .

OK I have to ask it you sure you are going to give the 462 cm back and not just keep it you seem to be liking it alot and I have seen buy watching and looking around where you could really use that saw you have some good size trees just my observations love the videos and the family keep them coming
I'm interested to know now that over a year has passed if you have switched to the 462 or are you running the 362 still?
without a new chain on both, no contest

lol
Pretty fast!
She cuts eh! great power to weight ratio on that.
Dang it Mike, now you got me wanton to trade my old heavy ms441!
@@Mr42960 thanks, I'll probably be looking to trade
I've been cutting firewood for years with my 441c,but the older I get the heavier it feels. I'm lookin at a ms362 at my local pawn shop that looks great and has a $280 price tag on it. I was lookin for a 261,but beggers cant be choosers. Most of what I cut can be easily handled with a smaller saw and the price is right. I'll keep my 441 with its 28" bar for bigger stuff, but if the 362 is still there,I think I'll get it Tuesday.
I have told you many times, my friend, that you are a housewife, well done, you make nice videos.🇬🇷👍
Hey Mike can you get ypur hands on a 261 CM? To do a test a side-by-side comparison with the 261 CM against a 362.
