- Vintage Zenith Transoceanic H500 Daytime bandscan of shortwave and mediumwave from the boiler room
I recently did a daytime bandscan of shortwave and mediumwave bands with my vintage Zenith Trans-Oceanic H500 shortwave radio from my boiler room in the basement of my home located in Yonkers New York USA. I connected the radio to my MFJ-1886 receive loop antenna using a SO239 to BNC male adapter to a BNC to banana plug standoff with a pair of speaker wire connected to the back of the radio on the antenna screw type terminals. Conditions was not the best for shortwave and also it was around 12 noon. Mediumwave band was better, of course this radio can only go up 1600 kHz on Mediumwave. The radio still works well after all these years. I would like someday to do a total recap of this radio.

Oh wow. I absolutely love that radio. Always hunting for those and others of the like at yard sales and whatnot.
I would keep looking. I have a second one the A600. I picked that one up for around $25 from Craigslist. I need to restring the dial and replace some caps. It powers up but I get the dreaded hum. Thank you for watching. Have a great day Thor. 😊
Nice that an old readio like that still works!
Yes it is pretty cool this radio works good after all these years. I also have the A600, but that radio needs a restring on the tuning dial and also some caps need to be replaced. Thank you for watching. Have a great day David. 😊
thanks you solved my noisy radio problem. So much junk in the air and inside the house. I can connect my inverted VEE antenna to the screw terminals on the back of the chassis. The screw terminal next to the connection for the ROD antenna is the HOT lead for shortwave radio AND the BC band. The screw next to that is GROUND. Very important for proper antenna connection and lower the noise. These radios are fun. But they do need care and alignment and replacement capacitors. And they sound really nice with a lot of sound. My Zenith doesn't do too well on AM.
Yes we all have to deal with more and more RFI today. I'm glad to have helped. In this case I was using a MFJ-1886 receive loop antenna and nulled out my noise source. It works well for noisy environments. Thank you for watching and have a great day Adrian.
Nice work ...I had this unit in the 60s. I could never get any reception in the tropical band s... below 6 khz.
Thank you. Pretty cool that you had that radio. I pick up below 6 kHz. This one works fine on all bands. Thank you for watching. Have a great day. 😊
I just bought one of these yesterday.
Congrats Mike. I hope this radio brings you as much joy as this radio does for me. I love these old tube radios. Thank you for watching. Have a good weekend Mike. 😊
@Danny Shortwave And Radio DX I've been around ZTOs for over 40 years. My dad let me listen to his when I was growing up. It opened the whole world to me.
Nice bandscan.
Thank you Kegan. Thank you for watching. Have a great day. 😊
Beautiful scan.
