Cocoron looks right up my alley. I've never heard about it before today. Never heard of Akira Kitamura before today either! Had a big smile on my face at 18:20. Thanks for these awesome videos!
Great video as always! Clicked on it as soon as it popped up! As for the nicknames, I've seen time and again people mention this as an anti-poaching move. Most examples are from the Atari era though, so perhaps it was not such a big deal in Japan?
That might have had something to do with it too! I've definitely read about instances of talent poaching at the time as well. A lot of the information about that particular part of the video came from an interview with Kiyoshi Utata where he was talking about the internal culture at Capcom - which honestly sounds wild - so I wouldn't be surprised if that was a motivation as well at some level!
It's crazy how much Akira Kitamura really contributed to the Famicom and Gaming scene as a whole. I only hope more devs/creators take after him. Also, just wanna say I love your channel and I only hope it continues to gain traction.
Thank you so much for the kind words! It's been a good year so far, so here's hoping the momentum keeps going! And yeah, it's incredible to me that someone so influential was so unknown at the time - and even today! I'm sure he would have eventually gotten there if he'd stayed in the gaming space, but even then, he's definitely not someone who seeks the spotlight, so who knows? I have a feeling there are quite a few more folks like him that were super influential, but were unknown at the time as well. It's a super-interesting period of time to study!
Very nice video! I wonder what Kitamura is going to be working on? I never knew Cocoron had a planned sequel. It's a shame that Takeru folded before it could be released. Speaking of, I think you mispronounced the company's name throughout the whole vid lol. "Takuru" as opposed to "TaKEru".
Probably! 😅 I have zero training in Japanese, so I try to look up pronunciations before I record these videos. Takeru was one where I found a couple of different ones, and I absolutely could have chosen the wrong one to go with. I seem to be doing more and more of these videos, so one of my short term goals is to take a Japanese class just so I can understand the pronunciation rules better. 😄 And for the sequel, I originally thought that only a few screenshots survived, but there's actually a LOT of stuff out there if you dig deep. It seems like it was really pretty much finished before they shelved it - a couple of magazines even did previews of the pre-release version of the game. It's such a shame! Anyway, thanks so much for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@BittyKongsQuest Ah, something that I learned when doing baby level Japanese study is that their vowels are always pronounced the same way. A is always "ah" I is always "ee" (like "key") U is always "ooh" E is always "eh" and O is always "oh". Typically they'll teach the hirigana stuff that you can pick up in a few weeks of study.
I wish we could try the Pc engine version hope one day we could play it. Ps : in the data files there is a text that conferms a north american release was planned. The studio put banngers if you could read japanese.
Oh! That's a good bit of info! Getting familiar with some more of the Japanese language is on my shortlist of things to do. It seems like I'm referencing Japanese sources more often than not these days. 😆

Oh wow I wasn't expecting such quality to come from a channel so small, this is so great
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Considering that a lot of huge channels put out hot garbage, one should never assume such things.
