Liner Notes:
My two favorite songs in high school were arguably this and "Kayleigh" by Marillion (as seen previously on this channel! • Kayleigh (acoustic Mar... ). "Tooth And Nail" by Dokken is a near perfect album, rivaling such other 80's offerings like "Pyromania" by Def Leppard, but without the extreme production value--which is a plus, I reckon. Don Dokken was one of my favorite 80's "glam rock" singers--I'm assuming that's the preferred term, considering the alternative, "hair band." He had hair with the best of 'em, mind you. But man, Don can sing. And thankfully he did and does, often. In the age of screamers and shriekers, he was and is a singer.
"Alone Again" was sort of my theme song in high school (late bloomer, let's say). But I had a long and enjoyable "Dokken phase" to help pass the time. I remember the envy I felt as a high school friend, Shelly Nelson, told me of her chance encounter with Dokken somewhere. She said she didn't really know who they were at the time (what?! she didn't appreciate it!), but that they told her "Keep rokken' with Dokken!" ("so cool!" I thought).
The song is sort of between E-flat minor and E minor, pitch-wise. I resolved this by setting my tuner to 449 Hz (not all tuners will do that), and then tuning down to E-flat minor (but just not all the way down, essentially). That matched the pitch of the original pretty well. That tuning just has a certain vibe that you don't get at E or E flat. Can't really explain it. But matching the pitch really sets the mood when playing this tune. Maybe it's just unsettling, being between pitches we're used to hearing.
We had big "gloves" to fill, playing these parts. Rock and I shared the rhythm parts, but George Lynch is a monster guitarist, so Rock had his work cut out for him on the solos. And Bryce had fun rocking Jeff Pilson's bass part. And Mick Brown's kick drum part is there in my stomp pedal, but I had to simplify it a bit. :)
Mike Massé - vocals, rhythm guitar, stomp pedal
Rock Smallwood - lead guitar
Bryce Bloom - bass
Thanks to Wild Dog Stomp pedals out of Australia for providing the awesome stomp. Here's my model: www.wilddogsto...
Thanks to Nathan Mitchell for filming. The video looks great. We shot this the same day as we did the Berlin cover, "The Metro."
I recorded the guitars and vocals with a Townsend Labs Sphere L22 into my UA Apollo.
I use Elixir Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb Light HD strings.

Mike Massé great job mike! Next is dream warriors!🤘🏻
You need to come to Austin. We are the live music capital of the world after all. ;)
wow you can really sing
Great cover! Dokken was always an under rated band. Would love to hear "Walk Away." Would be a great acoustic version.
George Lynch....amazing guitarist
@@stevedavis7451 Incredible player, from an Era with no shortage of great guitar players.
Huge Dokken fan, especially this beautifully heartbreaking ballad. Your cover actually adds a haunting quality with the crisp, clear vocals and beautiful acoustic arrangement. I just subscribed to your channel because a co-worker recommended you. Your voice is amazing. Good luck with your career!
P.S. There are 10 complete idiots out there that gave this a thumbs down. Shame on you!
SAME!
Chills. Every. Single. Cover. Also, this time, on Rock's solo. DAMN!!! You guys killed it!!!
Every musician on this song nailed it so perfectly
He sounds great with backing musicians! He should get a full band together with a great drummer/percussionist.
You captured the haunting vibe of this one perfectly. Mike Massé sings the songs like you expect to hear them!
Thanks, Jim!
Absolutely
true
AWESOME cover Mike! I've been following you since your Africa cover premiered years ago. Your voice was PERFECT for this one! George, Mick, and Jeff need to hook up with you and tour!!!
I'd go see that!
He sings better than Don
Absolutely brilliant 🎶🎵🎼👍🇺🇸♥️🇮🇪🎼🎵🎶
Kick it up a notch and do Unchain the Night too.
Man, I listen to Dokken since 85, when I was 11, bought Tooth and Nail that year and I gotta say: what a great rendition that was! Great job!
Looking forward to this. Your voice is perfect for the song.
Exactly what i thought
Amazing like always Mike! Loved it!! Awesome job :) I do not think there is a video of yours i would ever dislike! You are just amazing my friend!
Can "In My Dreams" be far behind.
I really can't wait for this one, it's one of my favorite songs and i grew up with it! I Know your cover will be AMAZING as always! cheers from Italy :)
It did not disappoint! I LOVE IT!!!
OK. Now do "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O' Sullivan in a genre/era mash-up. Just a suggestion.
I'd love to hear something from the Scorpions. I think it would be a match made in heaven.
Dokken was on of my favs in HS, great song
Amazing cover. You captured the passion and heartbreak of the song. Great job. Loved your Kayleigh cover too!
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Dad and I are HUGE Dokken fans. My first concert was when my Dad took my 10 year old sister and me (I was 13) to Dokken opening for Aerosmith in Augusta Maine in late 1987/early '88. It was one of the best nights of my life. We had the connection through rock and the music we loved. We loved all the same hard rock bands. It was during the 1980s which is the greatest era of music ever. He sadly passed away in 2013 and everytime I hear Dokken I always think of him. He is my hero. This is absolutely incredible, and I know my dad would agree. Thank you Mike. Never ever stop posting these. Ever since I heard you cover Toto Africa I've been a big fan, thank you!!
An acoustic rendition of No One Like You~Scorpions perhaps??,
Yes! Nailed it again! Hope you play this one in ANN ARBOR!
Awesome. Would love to hear you cover KiSS Forever
That was sublime! I'm sure Don wished he could sing half as well as you! Liked and subbed! Well Done!
Stunningly amazing!!!! The best cover of this song I have ever heard!!
Incredible... congratulations its truly like listening to dokken, unplugged......
Something I’ll always admire about don dokken is how he sang every word so properly
Didn’t modify his vowels or pronounce things weirdly, just sang as he spoke. Which is hard to do, in an era where nearly all his contemporaries were screaming in the stratosphere he was just singing, very accurate description mike and an awesome cover
Has the hair standing up on my arm....absolutely incredible!
That is allways what i look for... the vibratos at the vioce on the ending part. awesome
Dokken was one of my favorite bands growing up. Nailed this!
Very very very good!!! Very good version came out👏💪
BEST! Don should give this song to you! Better than original and I am a Dokken fan
Beautifully performed and produced Mike. I love how your voice fits into so many songs while making them your "own".
so close to Don dokkens voice. wow. could have fooled me if I wasn't seeing the person singing.
Excellent cover Mike! Looking forward to seeing you and the band in Longmont next month!
This is on the set list. See you there. 👍
Pipes on this cat, killing it ….. fantastic job u guys
Amazing!! Great great great job!!!
Don's voice is so shot. They should take you on tour.
Shut your eyes and it’s Dokken. 👍🏻
Been waiting for this .....
Dude like always, a stellar performance. I can imagine a Les Paul cranked through a Marshall cutting through. I bet Don Dokken is very proud. Sterling nailed the solo. George Lynch is smiling! Vocals are Dokkenesque! Bravo!
Thanks! That's Rock on the solo, but yes, he nailed it.
Beautiful job guys. It just keeps getting better and better. ✌😎
Excelente versão! Parabéns!
Superb! Just great!!
OMG! Mike Masse covering Dokken! I’ve seen it all. What a surprising cover and as usual a stunning job. Mike, LOVE the fact that you covered Dokken. The eighties in general and pop metal in particular are so maligned, yet Dokken’s music has always been underrated and the classic lineup in its prime were all amazing musicians.
Agreed! Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks Mike. You made me cry.
Magnificent job here. The best I've heard. Vocals and sound are exceptional.
Muy buena versión👏👏👏👏
Omg
How did you do this?
It's magic!
Watch out Don Dokken!!
Mike, get your leather pants and “Big Hair” ready!!!!
A W E S O M E J O B ! ! !
As always Mike this was just amazing. I’d love to hear you tackle some RJD to showcase your amazing range. Cheers
That was better than the original. Really great job guys.
As I said previously on your work on Metro, once again you have exceeded all expectations. -Never- have I heard as respectable a cover of a Dokken song as this. Dokken was one of my favorite groups in my teens, and as time marches on and we all get older I have listened to countless covers since then. Not one ever truly came anywhere close to capturing the uniqueness of Don Dokkens vocals. Until I heard this today. You absolutely nailed it. Hats off brother, thank you for sharing your gift with the world. It is a better place with you and your friends singing and performing in it.
Thanks, man. I do feel a “reverence” of sorts for the source material and try to treat it respectfully. Dokken is no exception to that. I spent many hours listening to them, for which I’m grateful. I’m happy to bring these songs back into focus, as they deserve.
Friggin Fantastic!
Another awesome cover , as usual
I sing this and I've been told very well... YOU are outstanding 👏 very nicely done.
Wow, great voice!
Great job - amazing voice and guitar solo!!!
Have a crack at It's Not love, just for a laugh! :D

🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
Epic voice
Hell yeah
That solo! Hell yea! Thanks for doing this cover. Good memories of t-tops and simpler times.
Awesome cover. One of my favorite hair bands. Dokken had the songs and ballads that would just grow on you.
I love your version and Bryce's bass licks and Rock's acoustic leads kicks ass!
Your strong vocals never disappoint.
Thanks for sharing..
Absolutely amazing!
LOVE this song. There is not a lot of Dokken that has aged well, but this song is just perfect. Great work, as always!
Disagree - a ton of Dokken songs have not only aged well, but are fantastic in an acoustic setting.
Wow!
YES! 80s Hard Rock baby!
Classic! Thank you. :)
Effing awesome song
Your great man
Perfect voice, perfect musicians and everyone is spot on. Well done guys!! I'm a new fan, Jim, 55 yrs old here on the UES in my little overpriced apartment in Manhattan. Excellent guys!! New fan and I'll spread the word.
😱😱😲😲 That is seriously his voice??! Nooooo F N way??!!! That is purely insane!!! 😃😃😃😃😃
Never disappointed, Mike! Keep it up!
Mike, I really like your arrangements. I'm one of those guitar players who has to fight tooth and nail just to get a little bit better! Gonna follow you on this one. I learned Behind Blue Eyes from watching you too. I can't sing AT ALL, so it sounds a bit empty without a vocal. Such is life!
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Great cover, Mike. I've been a long time listener. I love your voice tone. Have you covered any Scorpions? This sooo reminds me of them. You should cover a Scorpions song (or two).
Same girl I took to that Boston concert "Third Stage" was in a band and nailed this song. Yep. Not an exactly an "E".
çok güzel maşallah mike usta
Ever consider covering any songs by the Canadian band, Blue Rodeo? I think you could cover them very well. Like this song here, Bad Timing. They have many good ones, Rose Coloured Glasses and Lost Together are good ones too. ruclips.net/video/WEYJbyH1Cns/видео.html
Great Cover of a great song.
wow, nice similar vocals and I didn't know you could even get an SE acoustic from PRS..
You came up under recommended on my cover of this song. Love it!
