Dry Ice Cleaning Porsche 964 Dirty Engine Detail

- Dry Ice Blasting in the car detailing world has exploded over the past few weeks. The irony is that this type of cleaning has been available for many years as a non-destructive method for safely cleaning surfaces in the industrial and commercial markets. Cleaning and detailing disaster cars and engines has been done before, but never with so much social media presence. I'm using a Cold Jet machine with a 375cfm compressor that was rented from Red-D-Arc tool rental in NJ.. This set-up is a bit more "industrial" and less precise due to its industrial design. In other words, my ignorance picked the wrong machine for this type of precise work, but it was super educational to go through the "growing pains" of my education. Nonetheless, the ice balster did a great job. The operator (me) needs more practice and most likely a smaller nozzle to get into all the nooks and crevices. What I have learned is that Dry Ice Detailing is "part" of the many services our industry can provide. It's an add-on similar to clear bra (PPF), window tinting, paintless dent removal (PDR), and coating applications. Next week we have an expert coming to the AMMO NYC Studio to teach me (us) everything we need to know about dry ice blasting vehicles and how to do it safely. Hope everyone enjoys! -Larry

Other people: First, start by using a brush and soapy water to...
Larry: After firing up the industrial generator, use dry ice particles to melt away dirt with laser beam focus.
Soapy Wooder*
You realize Larry is bringing up the rear in this whole dry ice blasting wave, right?
This is not new by any means. Late to the party maybe but if this gets more people interested in it, then that’s a win for the industry.
i am a simple man i wanna have a porsche, a garage and a soft ice machine, i like strawberry
Brush and soapy water works terrible
Just wanted to give a thank you to the guy that first showed me this process 9 years ago. Paul Dalton. I've always wanted to try it and so many of you have asked me to do a video on it...so thx again Paul! Here is his video from what feels like 100 years ago. Hope you are well Paul! ruclips.net/video/SQ5Rsz4oveE/видео.html
But it's only really useful to more complex restorations, isn't it?
Thank you kindly I’m well, hope you are too!? Which ice machine did you use and the dry ice pellet size ?
Use a sort of tent to cover the whole car before the dry ice application and please do not swipe the dirt out by brush or compressed air. Use a vacuum cleaner or collect them from wet floor then into a specific container. Thnx for the great content.
I was wondering how long you think it would have taken to get the same results, including the exhaust and aluminum to the same level, without the dry ice machine, just using your traditional methods?
Two things: That tool is amazing! & I want to live in that shop! Awesome video, loved seeing this process.
Love your channel. Need to chat one day. Need major lawn help :)
@@AMMO-NYC Wow I really appreciate that! Anytime, I'd be glad to help. Thanks so much!
This interaction is amazing! Two of my favorite RUclips content creators! Please collaborate 🙂
Oh a crossover between silver cymbal and ammo now THAT would be cool lol I’m glad to see all my favorite youtubers bleeding over into other RUclips channels 😍
Those machines are around $20k. I can def. See why this service is so expensive.
I literally discovered Dry ice Cleaning about a month ago or so and now you're doing it too, the stars aligned. You could use a curtain around the car so you can still clean inside and stop the dust particles flying everywhere!
With ice blasting comes a ice blasting tent...
Yeah I've always wondered why he has an open studio, as opposed to a dedicated area where everything wouldn't get coated in spray from the jet washer and dirt/ dust from general cleaning.
would also need a massive negative pressure exhaust extractor, more and more trouble once you think about it
Not literally
What about the top ?
Would I need a sealed room or just the sides is enough ?
I've been following Dry Ice cleaning for years. If I didn't already have a thriving business, I'd love to get into a business with Dry Ice cleaning. It's perfect for YOUR business to offer that service to your clients, Larry !!!
I didn't even know ice blasting was a thing until now, it looks real cool. As far as the soot getting everywhere, two things:
1. You now have a reason to do a "Detailing My Shop" video, if desired.
2. Other people say drop down walls/curtains, but since the design of the studio might make that difficult, an easier solution could be using those plastic covers (like you used on the green Porsche to protect it from that one concept Baja) to form a tarp over the lifted car. Then you could tape the end facing the open garage door to an industrial fan to suck soot outside to make cleanup easier.
Obsessed garage just did 3-4 videos highlighting dry ice cleaning
This further reinforces that track cars aren’t just cars that get beaten, knocked around, and thrown in a shed until the next event. You can tell that this car has been loved, used as it was designed, and taken care of. Beautiful car, great job!
Had been said before but i’ll say it again: You see other detailers washing their cars the usual way but when you watch Larry you see an artisan. The craftsmanship involved in all the videos. Man. Wow.
#5 cylinder looks like it's running hot, bud
I am glad to see people using this method. My company actually sells dry ice and rents/sells the Red D Arc dry ice blasting machines!
You can tell Larry birthed all of these RUclips detailer guys. And still miles ahead of them !!!
I honestly dont' care how clean or not this ends up. But this video is so satisfying to watch.
Saw this technique on Tommyfyeah’s channel, this is so impressive and satisfying to watch
Huge thanks to my friend Paul Dalton for inspiring the dry ice blasting for all of us all those years ago.
I'm surprised you don't have drop down walls for that center area, to keep everything contained Larry

I was thinking about that ever since he opened this shop. I find it crazy that he allows all the water mist, dirt, dust, go everywhere in the shop covering everything, including other cars in there, kitchen, tables, like wtf.
@@joei4ever - he's not as OCD as I thought. I would have stop the second I new about the dirt flying everywhere.
@@mikea5205 He's experimenting with the new tool. This is part of it. This doesn't mean he isn't going to scrub down the entire shop/other cars after he's done
@@TheCompyshop Fair point its a new tool, but the car in the next bay over that gets over spray from pressure washing all the time seems like it would lead to more cleaning needed.
That is a brilliant idea: leaves no residue like grit blasting. And a great lesson learned about confining the dirt that is being removed from the car!
Dude that 964 is so lucky to have you as the owner, I mean from that crazy paint job, to now this, unbelievable 🤯
Need to watch the videos from I Am Detailing on RUclips and maybe talk to them, their results are absolutely amazing. And they always use at the end a laker to protect what it was done. Love that you are using this method now, a real game changer.
Clicks on Ammo video, immediate thumbs up
Next episode: how to detail a shop after ice blasting 😁
I've seen lots of stuff get media blasted. But hadn't seen an underbody done yet. Thanks for scratching that off my list. Only problem now is I'm going to want to see more. Hope you consider adding it to your game too.
Larry I absolutely love that you've been doing this for years and are happy to demonstrate curiosity, surprise, and not be afraid to say "lesson learned." Yours is the attitude I want to model when I'm an expert in something. Keep it up!
Damn! Really impressive. Never heard of this untill now
I use one of those at work to blast our equipment clean. The static from blasting is insane, hope you’re grounding your parts, it F’ING HURTS getting shocked from the static.
Also it is really nice because it’ll turn grease or oil solid so you can sweep it up. Better sweep it or vacuum it while it’s solid.
The shop where I work uses what looks like a paint booth with supply fans on one end and exhaust fans on the other.
Amazing technique, love it. Just today I got to bring back my old 2008 mustang convertible to life for the season (still needs a tire change and a pre-season service) and looking at it (the old beast is good looking from the far, but far from good looking) I actually ran through all the steps you would take to make it look much better. I actually will use a few of the techniques you have taught us, thanks for all the wonderful instructions.
I’m seeing a lot more videos where dry ice is used to clean cars and components. Great stuff.
Definitely looking forward to more on ice blasting. Looks like a very promising technique that we haven’t heard a ton about yet. I think it’d be helpful to talk about the costs involved of the rental equipment, dry ice costs and other tools/costs needed.
Cool video!
I’ve seen this before and I’m so glad you’ve shown more about it Thanks Larry
The amount of chemicals you can avoid using or reducing by doing this first is absolutely insane. Great alternative, first time seeing this ice blasting stuff
Used dry ice blasting on my house to remove failed stain and paint. Worked pretty good, just monitor the pressure as you can destroy the wood. Better than making a mess with other media blasters.
You are the best detailer I followed on youtube. The gap with the second place and you is too much. I wish you live in San Jose, CA.
Appreciate the note for sure, but there are a ton of great detailers on and OFF YT. As long as detailing stays fun and provides for the fam...I will keep doing it as long as my body allows. Again, thx for the thoughtful note :) -L
That is an amazing before and after! I had no idea that ice blasting was even a thing, and now I want to do it to my car.
I have seen various RUclips clips pop up selling this idea and services. It's good to have someone translate it into English for us. Great as always
Great result Larry , the workings of the underside of a 911 is basic but to the eye very pleasing so to be able to clean it like that is awsome !
Imagine detailing in VR since you can't purchase the all tools necessary for cleaning. That'd be so nice.
All of the work none of the pay lol
You could always work for a detail shop if you’re interested in getting started
@@MorningMindfulness will get there eventually! Purchased my first pressure washer and foam cannon last week. Not really making that much in $. But I've been following detailing channels for years now. Just the thought of having it in VR is sort of fun to imagine.
@@joshuaaaroy that’s awesome man, keep going and never stop!
he's got a detailing videogame coming out on Steam!
Wondered when this was coming! God this must make you so happy! I'm jealous 😮
Bro that cleaning is so satisfyinggggg!
This is completely new to me, I've never heard or even imagined anything close to this. Very interesting.
By far the most satisfying tool on earth
Crazy that you made this video with this machine. I have been researching these and thinking about buying one for about a month now and then I see it on your channel that I have followed for some time now. Great content.
I have been searching for ice blasting for a couple months now. Man thanks for the video and really informing us on this service
To keep the extra environment clean I think draping the perimeter of the car down to the floor with plastic would help contain the mess. Nice video!
looks like the next addition is a negative air pressure tent for the shop! great vid!
I'm amazed this dry ice blasting method is as good as those laser cleaners but without taking away the surface coatings, that's cool
I wonder if using a wood shop dust extractor and some plastic drapes could create a blasting tent to cut down on the mess. Super impressed by the results!
Also, it’s great that you rented the equipment and learned from experience. 🙌
I've been watching ice detailing recently and wandering why Larry wasn't getting involved.
Never knew ice blasting was a thing that existed- brilliant video of learning ‘mistakes’ solid job
I worked at a car parts manufacturer years ago, and they would contract out to have their machinery cleaned with dry ice. Loud as hell, but works.
That said, there is a reason why any type of particle blasting is done in a cabinet, outside, or contained some how. With dry ice at least you don't have to worry about also cleaning up the particle's, as it simply evaporates. If you are going to pursue this, I highly recommend some sort of cordoned off area to contain the blowoff.
It’s nice to see Larry working in his personal cars for a change. Next up is the Impala
Thank you for all this great videos. This is a dream come true, I just don’t worry about cleaning the inside and outside of my vehicle, It’s so important to have a clear view of what’s going on underneath because of what you mentioned, leaks and any other things that might me goin on.
Wow, 3 step cleaning process to the undercarriage. Only Larry! Oh, Titan degreaser is out of stock already....sheesh. Many more blessings for you and your fam!
This is next level. I've always wanted to detail the underside of my car.
I’ve never even heard of ice blasting but this is just awesome!!
I've Never seen "Ice Blasting" before this is new!!
"I am detailing" channel has been doing it for a long time.

@@salimshafie5614 nice right on but I never knew it existed until now, used in this type of scenario
Great work as always👍
Would love to learn more about dry ice cleaning machines!❄️
Really want to try that detailing video game. 👍
It's good seeing the Porsche getting some love again!
Was hoping you would be exploring this new part of detailing. Glad to see it happened so soon!
Thanks Larry, funnily I thought about ice cleaning my 964 C4 '89 just this week. Amazing timing, amazing result! CheeRS!
This is great. Saw it first via Matt @obsessedgarage but what I appreciate here is the sense of safety. All other videos mention Dry Ice as being some sort of magic process. Here you can clearly see you want to wear protection for your lungs, ears, and eyes that's for sure.
You must not have watched all Matt’s videos because it’s very clearly addressed in the extremely detailed videos
That's a new process for me. I never heard of "Ice blasting" before. Very interesting.
When dry ice blasting, consider isolating your car on a domed curtain so the rest of your amazing garage stays clean. Pre-wet all surrounding surfaces with soapy water to catch and flow those greasy solids down the drain. A down-draft paint booth type of setup might work well too.
I agree that looks nasty 3:50 .
Wow, this is nuts - never heard of this type of cleaning before
I don’t understand the 7 people thus far who don’t like this video. Quite funny when the video is very much interesting and awesome
Love all these videos, you can always tell when someone is doing it with a passion.
Amazingly quick & pristine!!! Loved this Larry.
Wow dry ice is pretty amazing. Love the way it cleans.
Larry - love the videos and content, I call these videos you make someone’s “peaceful obsession”.... cheers from Tx
This guy has the best job in the world
Awesome! Look forward to future videos about this method! It was so gratifying for my OCD soul to watch!
I would think it would be a good idea to mild clean, ice blast, deep clean like you did. This would likely knock down the amount of dirt going everywhere. The other idea I had is old school shower curtains on a piece of like copper pipe and thick heavy drop cloth. Allow you to basically isolate it from the rest of the building. It is often referred too as a clawfoot shower curtain. You just build it bigger for your car bays. it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. If you wanted to do it another way you could connect the shower curtains using pool tarp tape to form the top. Just some ideas. Been watching you for a long time. Keep being awesome like you are.
Dry ice blasting is used for cleaning tools as well. The new 777x's vent stringers are cleaned with dry ice blasting as well.
Wooooo with your review, I was looking for a review like this… I am researching about detailing cars and equipments, and this machine it’s getting a lot of attention. There is a lot of talking about the pros on using this machine but most don’t talk about the cons and what it takes to run this machine…
So happy to see this video happen! Awsome stuff as always with your videos and teaching Larry! I hope to be able to met you someday! 👍
Saw a car restoration channel using the ice blaster to restore a supra iirc, really interesting to see more detailers get into it. Love learning about it. With all that dirt that gets around esp in your shop with multiple vehicles, i feel like you'd need a booth for it
It's like media blasting, but with media that disappears without a trace after being used!
That's seriously cool.
I would love to see a comparison between this ice blasting and those laser rust removing machines. I see a lot of restoration channels use the laser and it seems like it might be less likely to blow gunk around the shop as well. Probably it's largest downside would just be mobility under the car, but I think it's a similar set up cost and you wouldn't need to buy dry ice over and over.
I was surprised I couldn't find any mentions of laser in the comments! Hopefully this is another fun new idea to rent and try!
Hi Larry love the dry ice video . I’ve been watching other dry ice videos where they wrap plastic around the perimeter of the car to keep all the dust dirt underneath the car ... try it next time to keep that gorgeous shop of your clean.
The Speed Cleaning Channel for Gear Heads.
If you clean an engine bay, make sure to cover the wiring. The ice pellets eat through plastic and dryed out rubber thats used to cover wiring. I would recommend an outdoor place to do it because as you found out, it's going to be very dusty.
That’s pretty cool, I have only seen dry ice blasting in residential mold removal.
we used this last year and you are right the price needs to come down to a good price point
You should have put some sort of clear tent around the car. Love the channel - thanks!
Man i'm so pumped for this video game!! Can"t wait! This ice blasting is very impressive though! Thanks for the content Larry
Both you and Ratarossa uploaded dry ice cleaning videos at the sametime. 😂nice!!
My first exposure to dry ice blasting. Very cool .
Finally, an episode on dry ice blasting!!!!!!!
Larry, those ice machines are cool for removing rust, but a hotsy pressure washer will do better for removing grime. They use a kerosene heater in conjunction with a very high flow water pump and are absolutely incredible for cleaning. Heat loosens grime, just like with dishes. Keeps you from damaging metal as well, but it will scalp paint.
I work for the company that manufactures those machines. It’s incredible technology!
Hey Larry, great video! Wondering if you'd consider making an episode about pressure washers themselves at some point? Looking to get an upgrade from my basic hardware store model and am having trouble finding decent information out there. Some details about attachments, wands, etc. would be very helpful too. Hopefully this could help some other as well!
Larry plays it right! No dirt under that car!!!
By the way I think this would be a great offering for those clients who want it. Also like you said a great way to find/track leaks.
Dry ice blasting is the way forward so much easyer, just a tip when your car is up on the jack and you are underneath stick some plastic sheets down from the jack to make a curtain no mess out side the area then and no dust every where in your work shop 👍
I was wondering where all the grime went and then you showed the aftermath. I also had a laugh when you were in your clean suit. First thing I thought of was an Oompahloompa.
Seems like something you should do in a paint booth,
Is no one going to talk about how beautiful the exhaust system is
Wow, that was Amazing. I figured stuff would go everywhere but not EVERYWHERE. Maybe consider some sort of easy to deploy tenting in an effort to contain the dust somewhat. Interesting that this could possibly be scaled down to offer as a service. Wheels, etc. etc.
You are perfect in anything you try doing it
It’s just phenomenal...!!!
Ice blaster is good and effective however it has a drawback it damages and and dislocate soft parts like disk cover pipe lines etc etc, so have to be careful with pressure while using the blaster, but it's so satisfying to watch 👍
Its amazing it took so long for this method to take off.
For me, too costly for the amount of work. Resp mask, draping around car, the mess.
No one hyping this ever wants to talk about the cost and the [un]likelihood of having enough millionaire clients who want it done for it to be a worthy investment. Larry probably used at least $400-500 in dry ice alone, nevermind the cost of the machinery, the ppe, the value of his time, and the need as a business to have a profit margin.
I used to work at a federal shipyard where we cleaned huge ballast tanks with dry ice, using it on cars tho you gotta be extra careful. Pellets are able to destroy brand new bushings or can cause some serious damage to any rubber parts.
What a result, glad to see the 964 again, the build of that car was honestly perfect. The way it was done, in that particular order and everything with really high picture and audio quality. I think I'm gonna have to rewatch some of it!
Did ice blasting and the following dirt buildup give you any thoughts about having a tenting(?) solution put into the studio so that you can cocoon the washing area?
This is soooo cool!!?
Amazing job as usual.
One question, what does the "nipples" on the inside of the wheel barrel do?
I would guess that they are tire pressure sending units?!
