  • This video explains the Best Types of Muzzles for Dogs with Nick White and Dirk Hamilton.
This clip is from the "Muzzle Magic: THE ART OF MUZZLE CONDITIONING ANY DOG BY DIRK HAMILTON" instructional video available here:

This first style of muzzle is a polymer
    coated basket muzzle.
    There's not really anything
    I don't like about it.
Dogs can eat and drink out of it
    very easily.
It's also very good for breathing.
This, I would say, fits about 90% of dogs
    when properly fit.
But in the case that you have a dog
that cannot wear this style of muzzle
or maybe has a wider head,
we do have some other selections for you.
This is called a jasco muzzle.
What I like about this is that it is bite
proof, just like your wire basket.
One little to no issue eating
    and drinking out of it.
Obviously eating is a little bit harder
on the front of this, but
it can be done with some modification
that we can go for later.
But this is a good style muzzle
for your breeds, like mastiffs or pit
bulls or any type of wider head type
dog like Rottweilers as well, of course.
So this is a good option as well for you.
Our other option that we have
    that's another basket style
is made by Dean and Tyler.
And this is another style of basket
muzzle that can sit well with pit ease.
They do make a lot of muzzles
    specifically for pit bull terriers
    00;01;22;08 - 00;01;25;16
    and other types of dogs
    that are similar in shape.
    00;01;26;09 - 00;01;30;05
What I like about this one is that, again,
it's bite proof of the wire basket.
    00;01;30;22 - 00;01;34;04
    They can eat and drink
and breathe out of it relatively well.
    00;01;34;04 - 00;01;37;04
And some of them, if you need to leave
    a little bit more sturdier
    of the strap on it,
they do have a center strap on it as well.
    So another brand, another style.
It can work with a different style of dog.
    These
are kind of the styles that I like to use.
The ones that I don't like to use
    are Baskerville style muzzles
that you can find at various local stores.
    Those rubber style styled
muzzles are not bite proof, unfortunately,
    and a lot of times
dogs don't have the ability to fully pant
    with their mouth
all the way open in the muzzle.
And so their mouth is like this
and they're not able to breed very well.
    Another style of muzzle
that I don't like to use
are the mesh ones that they like to use.
    It fits.
They can be okay at the vet's office,
but for everyday use and introduction
and just really the comfort for the dog,
it's not the best option out there.
Again, the option that I like the best
is the polymer coated wire basket muzzle
that you can buy at Leesburg.
