I can definitely relate, books saved my life in prison by saving my spirit ! Especially when you are in the hole and alone for months and years at a stretch ,I’ve literally read all these books he mentioned and more , books are life savers in prison because as soon as you learn that they may have your body in prison but they can’t keep ur mind or ur spirit locked up , you will give your life some purpose by learning,thinking and growing as a person .
Books are transformative and transporting because you can feel for the experience you are reading about, you can care about something outside of yourself.

I believe this. One of my elders in my masjid overturned a federal life sentence. He said when he was in Lewisburg the war with the aryan brotherhood was crazy. He said onetime one of the AB decided to convert to Islam and he was dead in a few days smh. He became a battlefield martyr.
After that murder of the white brother who converted an AB was murdered in retaliation by a JBM (Junior Black Mafia) member from Philly. He was put in the SHU under investigation, released but murdered in Philadelphia less than a year after release.

LOL! I was working the USP Allenwood control center that night. Lewisburg called me to ask if we had any body bags. They came up and picked up two of them that night, no white guys went into those bags.
Before I ever had the opportunity to see the movie, I had read THE GODFATHER, at least, about 20 times. Now, mind you, the movie/movies are CLASSICS, some of the GREATEST EVER, and, despite having seen them all numerous times, to the point where I know quite a bit of the dialogue before it even happens, I still will watch them, whenever I catch them on television. But, what I got the most out of the book, that wasn't necessarily transmitted as well through the movie, was glimpses of Italian history, culture, Mafia history, there & here, stuff that isn't gonna be learned watching gangster flicks. Such supplementary information afforded insight into certain situations that wouldn't be readily apparent otherwise, and, just made my appreciation of the movie even that much deeper. And, for that same reason, I will definitely be purchasing Mr. Ferrante's latest release, Borgata: Rise of Empire: A History of the American Mafia, in hopes that I can find some of the same joy I found in reading Mario Puzo's epic blockbuster, way back in the '70s.
