A Child's Prayer (by Janice Kapp Perry) Arranged by Elena Fortin
A Child's Prayer is a lovely children's hymn from our church, written by Janice Kapp Perry. As the pianist for our Primary classes, I have always found this hymn to be a beautiful one, but a little problematic for pianists. The hymn is usually sung with the first verse by the children--asking about Heavenly Father. The second verse is a counter melody usually sung by adults--as the answer to the children's questions. The third verse is sung as a duet with both melody and countermelody together! The written piano part supports the harmonies, but doesn't actually play either melody. Sometimes when the hymn is being learned, it's a little difficult for the children and adults to figure out their part. So I decided to re-arrange Janice Kapp Perry's beautiful hymn so that the piano supports both! If you listen carefully, in the third verse, you will hear both parts weaving together!
As a side note, this is my fourth year doing the 40 Piece Challenge, and I decided to do something a little different. I am starting a bit late, since September this year required way more preparation (group classes!!). Instead of continuing with learning repertoire, I thought I'd make this year a creative challenge, and try my skills at composing, arranging, and playing with Garage Band! So this year, you will see something a little different. Hope you enjoy!
